Uh-oh, I smell gas...

Just pulled the 240z into the garage.

Next day, open my door to the crisp and refreshing winter air. And what welcomes me but gas fumes!!!!

Somebody's got a fuel leak...

Likely places for it to be? '72 240z. I'll be putting it up on jackstands and peeking around this weekend, and will have the opportunity to put it up on a real lift at work next week. I just want to try and find the problem and pray it isn't the gas tank. It is a small and gradual leak, however. It pooled a little bit on t he driveway over a few weeks. My guess is a hose or connection near the tank??? Anyone have advice? Beyond "No Smoking!" . Thanks to all in advance.

Start off with an easy one.

Check to make sure your choke(s) is not stuck open. Check at the bottom of the carbs, not just looking at the position of the handle.

Possible causes:

1. Loose clamp where the filler tube connects to the fuel tank, or hole in the filler tube
   
2. Rotted fuel line connecting the tank to the hard lines, or the hard lines to the fuel pump
   
3. Rotted Fuel vent lines between the Vapor Recovery tank and the Fuel tank
   
4. Rotted/crack lines from fuel rail to the carbs
   
5. Cracked solder connection where the fuel feed and fuel return fittings enter/exit the Fuel tank
   
6. Hole or crack in the Fuel tank itself

   Where is the "pool" of fuel that you mentioned? Front or Rear of car? Right or Left side?

I tried to post that before you replied...wow, fast fingers!

I'll get under the car tomorrow and take as many pictures as I can, and try and locate the dripping. My guess is a seal/hose/connection from the fuel tank to something else, because last time I had the car up, the fuel tank looked fine. So hopefully, that means inexpensive to fix! =) Thanks for the speedy replies, and I'll have those pics tomorrow evening.

Gema, my first guess is the filler neck hose where it connects to the tank inlet. I think the hose is about $50.00. I just pulled my tank and in fact am painting it with POR today. I am going to eliminate the evap tank and all the hoses that cary the vapor and stink into the cabin area to the evap tank. There is a OEM hose for this . Cars that were not for the US market dident have this smelly systime. Gary:classic:

Hi Mike! Yeah, it has been taking a helluva long time for them to get it on-line. Can't imagine why it takes so long. I know there are a lot of parts, but geez they are taking their sweet time about it.

Interesting how some parts prices have remained essentially stable, others have risen 20%, and others risen 50% or more in the last few years.

If you remove the evap tank make sure you get a vented cap because before the evap tanks vapors would be release to the air. Also do not fill up your tank then park the Z with the filler side lower than the rest of the car on a warm day or you will be dumping fuel on the ground later in the day:cry:

and say Wow! a choke/hand throttle assembly like I've been wanting! But you call them, and it's NLA. They told me that they are pretty much transcribing their old, outdated catalog (2 years old now or more) onto the web. So don't get your hopes up.
