Heater Water Valve??

I just got my 74 260z the other day and while inspecting it I noticed the heat doesn't get hot. So I did some searching on the message board and looked in some of the books I've got. I found some posts on the control cable slipping off the water valves control arm so I went looking. Sure enough I found the cable, intact, just hanging there under the dash, but there doesn't appear to be a water valve at all.

Some questions, the valve is usually mounted behind the heater flapper door right? I see the outline of what looks likes the old mounting bracket with two screw holes. The PO mentioned that it needed a new "heater switch", I had assumed he was talking about something on the control panel itself, think he was probably talking about the valve? There is a straight heater hose running right through where I think the valve goes, what would that accomplish? Is it just there to keep the system sealed and leak free? Is installing the new valve simply a matter of doing some careful measuring and cutting the straight hose and installing the valve inline (assuming of course the straight hose was installed in place of the valve)?

Thanks for any help!

Are the actual heater hoses from and to the engine block intact and functional? Are they carring water to and from the heater core? Or is it bypassed? Like Enrique said if all the above is good and true, the water pump would constantly be pumping the coolant through your heater core. Constant heat. Does your engine run at a normal operating temp?

  • 6 months later...

I found a vacuum hose marked "W" on the end. Is that supposed to go to the water valve? If it does, where is the vacuum tap for the water valve supposed to be?

Right now, I think my heater is stuck on v'vent' so I think another vacuum hose fell off the control valve thingy.

thx

Hey All, I know this will shock some of the purists but I put a Mack Truck water valve in my 72. It works good and matches up with the stock cable. Part number is 25mf213. Costs around $13.

Let's see now, your car has a Mack Speedo cable, and Heater valve, I've got a feeling the Bulldog Hood Ornament and Air Horn must have been on back order! LOL
