  1. The carbs don't have to be removed. Do you have a manual (Nissan, Clymer, Haynes, etc? that deals with SUs? Any that I've seen have good information for noob's about caring and tuning SU's. BTW, these SU's are the simplest, easiest, most dependable carbs I've ever used and worked on. I was amazed at the simplicity the first time I worked on them. I would recommend getting a copy of the DVD "Just Su's" from ZTherapy. It goes into detail about them but for now a basic SU tuneup manual should be all you need. If you have any questions in the process, just ask.
  2. Hopefully I got the intermittent worked out. I decided to bite the bullet and get at the tuner board. Pretty scary stuff digging into it that deep having to figure out the dial indicator/5 tuning slugs hardware to free up the board, but finally got there, touched up some iffy looking solder and put back together. Same deal. Take a break and try again, this time the learning curve let me get it apart a lot faster. found some more that I missed, touched those up (5x mag glass and solder station with a small chisel point). Time it worked right away with no prodding of the PCB, In fact prodding did not make it go away which is good since it took prodding to make it work before. So I will let it sit over night and bask in the glory for at least 12 hrs (JIC its not fixed at least I can get a good night sleep thinking it is). Funny thing is I have another after market brand push button AM/FM stereo that fits better (uses the old face plate with knobs that match the fuction) since I don't have an OE faceplate. The one on the AM/FM 8 track fits perfect. So I will prob just install that one and someday put the Datsun branded radio in if I ever get a decent face plate.
  3. Thanks I have a ton of official documents and the main reason is because of a lot is missing online and i had to source a hardcopy. compared to other cars the Z is very well discussed but very badly documented online. I try to change that. i already made a few knowledge posts on my blog (so far only transmission and differentials), and i'm working hard on a a general fairlady post and another one about factory suspension and a basic knowledge source post which will include a ton of important and less-important documents. mainly officiall nissan stuff. so far i managed to source a lot of documents which are not available online and if i find some time i will scan the Service bulletins too. will probably take another few months but yes, i try to put it all together somewhen
  4. Win! Win! Win! Trans. does look good. I think you could hold the quarter panel for ransom. What a find. Please share any new-old info you find in the tech bulletins. There's always great trivia hidden in those.
  5. Some exciting news! First i was able to finally open up the FS5W71C 5-speed Transmission. Turns out the reason i wasn't able to open it earlier was because had removed the wrong locking spring *lol*. Small part - big problem. This is the one to remove on the main shaft bearing, not the small one in front of the bearing Finally disasembled and ready for checking. My unprofessional first check revealed that it's in quite good condition and no need for a big rebuild, but i will have a professional look over it and definitly will replace a few wear-parts anyway and have the housing repainted. Even better news - I was able to source a complete NOS (New Old stock!) Rear quarter panel from the Z. It's the US-edition with the cutout for the rear sidemarkers but otherwise exactly what i need. Man i've never seen something like this for sale in the last years and it was a reasonable price too!! It already arrived at my export agent and will be loaded onto the next sea-freight container to switzerland soon - should arrive here in about 6 weeks And then i bought this so i have a bit of extra reference and documents probably 50% of the bulletins are about the S30 chassis or L2x Motors
  6. Yes, that was the next post. Got distracted, sorry. They charged us $145 (CDN, about $1.50 USD, well $115 ish) for the 5 pieces. The two tail light strips were $90 out of that. There was quite a bit of prep on those. Clearly if you did a lot of prep and masking yourself, the costs could be reduced further. I don't impress easily, this process appears to have potential for the restorationists in all of us.
  7. Hello Everyone: Mr. Shigeru Nagata (retired Nissan employee) wanted to provide a little more information related to Nissan’s use of full size clay models, in the Design Development Department starting in 1961. Mr. Nagata was assigned to assist Mr. Goertz as a translator, during Mr. Goertz time at Nissan. He was also responsible for the Design Development Departments implementation of the US FMVSS related to Interior Design. Mr. Nagata wrote a 9 page article, in English that he wanted to share with the American Z Car Enthusiasts. Toward that end I have added it to the Z Car Home Page, along with more introductory information about Mr. Nagata. I think everyone will find it very interesting.
