  1. The old engine smoked like a 3 pack/day habit. The new engine is freshly rebuilt, has flat top pistons, and an N47 Maxima head. That's a nice combo. I am going to find out if there is a build sheet on it, too. My friend who led the swap thinks it has an interesting cam, too. As I was putting on the valve cover, I was stunned by the valvetrain. You could eat off it...if you didn't mind synthetic oil in your food.
  2. I've been using Quaker State Defy on my last rebuild. Did a valve adjustment the other day and I would swear it looks better than when I put it together. Very pleased with that oil and it's contents, high zinc level.
  3. That's some good observing. Reminds me of a problem I had with my fuel pump relay, where it would not power the pump when I tried to start it. Luckily for me I have a relay bypass switch to run the pump. I posted on it in the past and even took a picture of the solenoid coils. CO said they looked burnt. In 76 the pump relay is combined with the EFI relay. You said though, that you could hear the pump running. So, that doesn't really fit with bad power to the pump. Seems more like a floater in the tank, clogging the inlet. Didn't' know that water in the gas was part of the original problem. Maybe she does have some little vandals in the neighborhood. Might be worth time to drain the tank and check. I remember her quest for a locking cap.
  4. Did a test fit this morning of the header. Fit is excellent and no problems dropping in place. Don's iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile
  5. Today was engine swap day. Three very good and generous friends came over and made the day happen. I did more of tool fetching and parts running than I did turning wrenches. By the time we were done, the engine came to life. That was such a good feeling.
  6. Cliff , i cant imagine that it wouldn't work. The gasket would just cover the notches . id love to run LD, but it's a lot of work. Injectors and TB to mount. I finally broke down and bought a TIG , so I plan on using it . The LD intake has huge runners and long ones two. You would t think it but the they are twice as long as a N42 intake. So many ideas - so little time

  11. Look at the jpg or pdf at https://fiddlingwithzcars.wordpress.com/2013/01/20/hazard-switch-brake-light-turn-signal-circuit-analysis/. It shows a green/yellow for the hazard and green for the turn signals respectively coming off the fuse box. I know I captured the relative positions of the fuse box in my diagram.
  12. Clamp off the return line a little bit more at a time. Adjust the clutch pedal, it worked for me on my 240. It slipped so bad I could hardly back up the driveway then after adjusting I could chirp the tires. It's measurements are in the FSM.

No,No Sounds like fun! That's great. CZC is just one big family! Bond for everyone...
  14. Finding an acid resistant pump can be an issue. I bought a cheap parts washer to use with a rust remover. The rust remover ate the pump internals...
  15. For the turn signal switch, I have plenty of photos on my blog, along with a write-up.
  16. Ok, so I found some time to go check on Redbird with limited tools. Jai had purchased new plugs and I replaced them, They were very much in need. I visually checked all the connections to the switches and they were all good. Checked the ECU connections, all good. Everything still had dielectric grease that SteveJ had put on. I replaced a couple of fuel intake hoses at the fuel filter that were a little cracked. Also, I replaced the Fuel Filter and rotor button that Jai had purchased. I did not replace the Distributer cap, mainly because we didn't have a new one, but I did scrape the contact points. When prowling around I noticed the BCDD wire was disconnected and reconnected it to the harness. We started it up and purred like a kitten, nice and smooth. Next we took it down the road about 3 miles so we could hear the roaring Jai had mentioned. It's the clutch slipping, plain and simple. I could give it some throttle at shift and could just feel it. You hear the Engine rev but the scenery doesn't go by any faster. That's a really expensive thing for Jai and It's slipping bad enough to be a high priority. Unfortunately I don't have the capability to do that for her. Now, here is the other issue, We dove it to the gas station to put in some gas. Everything is running fine except for the clutch. When leaving the gas station to push it a little harder, maybe 500ft away, about 2500-3000 rpm (no tach), it just shut down. We pulled over and tried to restart but no luck. Her Fuel pressure gauge was reading about 15 PSI. Even when trying to start . When it runs, it stays around 30 PSI. We let it sit for a little while I was trying to think. I could hear the fuel pump and all the fuel lines were good. It was getting spark. I didn't check the air filter, but it seemed to be ok. I was starting to think it was temp related because that is right about the time when the temp gauge got to to operating temperature. It did not overheat. After cooling down a little it started right up, back to 30 PSI. It was getting dark. We started back on the road approaching a red light. The engine didn't shut down but I thought it wise to let it cool a little longer before stopping in traffic. It was one of those moments when I knew I didn't want to get stuck at a red light and decided pull into before said gas station with the clutch slipping (badly) and all of a sudden the horn pad falls into my lap all while thinking about the engine temp. I had a little sensory overload. We made it safely to a parking spot and let it cool a little longer and an underwear check. Anybody have a spare horn pad spring so that does happen again? She's missing that piece. We made it back to Jai's house (3-4 miles) at dark. Anyone have Ideas, the water temp sender and sensors were replaced a little over a year ago, but not the thermotime switch. The previous problem with Redbird shutting down (10-11/15?) wound up being bad gas with water in it.
  17. I've got a complete set of driver & passenger 1972 240z seat belts that are sitting in a box in my attic, along with the receivers/sleeves. Perfect candidates for re-webbing if anyone is interested Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile

I'm sorry for not mentioning that was a year old picture. I've got over 1,000 miles on it now and it's just now "loosening up". I believe like Matt does, get a strong reliable motor 1st and all the small stuff is actually fun doing, drinking beer makes it fun for me.
  19. Have never liked Michelins. They last a long time. But they do that by turning into granite as the tread wear gets below 50%. Horrible in the wet on used Michelins. Here in the PNW it rains a lot and you need a tire that stays grippy in the wet and cold. I've taught HPDE, and the worst cars to drive in the wet have always been shod with semi worn Michelins. The new Firestione Indy 500 ( Do not confuse with the older Wide Oval Indy 500 ) is getting rave reviews on Tire Rack. It's now rated #1 by customers in the Ultra High Performance class. Mind you, take that with a grain of salt as it's a fairly new tire and the data sample is fairly small. However, it's still getting lots of 5 star reviews. It's a re-branded Bridgestone...which is good.

Well... 2 years passed again quickly, and the invitation for the road check ( APK ) showed up on the doormat again. It failed on the rear left drum brake ( I guess from sitting still during storage, because I rebuild the brakes nog so long ago ), so took it apart, but eventually with some searching I found a new main seal and it worked again. Passed for another 2 years ! Now the next one is in 2019, then the next one would be in 2021 but since new regulation coming into place in May 2018 about classic cars beeing 50 years and older are free of road check forever, I might have luck 2019 is the last time she needs to go for the road check. The car is back in storage now, I hope the weather gets better soon, but as it looks now, end of april.. she will sleep at least another 2 months
  21. Damn, didn't know there was a such a big difference in the cut out between 240z-280z. Whats the measurements on the fujitsubo muffler? Zstorys muffler on my 240z
  22. K&N + tube installed! found an awesome Z mechanic in town and recommended some good things, so good to have and only 20 minutes away.
  23. The new exhaust arrived today. Sean's system is gorgeous and I am looking forward to getting the Z out of storage and getting started. Don's iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile
