  1. They didn't move from the 2 litre engine to the 2.4 litre engine. What happened was that three different L24-engined HS30-prefixed models were added to the existing two L20A-engined and two S20-engined models in October 1971, giving Japan a choice of no less than seven distinct S30-series Z models at that point. The brochure above corresponds with the October 1971 release of the L24-engined models.
  2. OK. This is a compromise method that I think works better anyway. Hold assembly hanging as shown. Tip just enough to touch but not depress needle valve. Take measurement.
  3. It is all in the details. new rollers and inserts.... No wonder it is going on a 5+ year restoration....
  4. Turn that assembly upside down and get in front of a mirror. Hold the float with your other hand. Blow into the fuel supply hose barb. When your breathe starts passing through look into the mirror and see where the float is. Bend the tab until the float' roof is parallel with the lid's roof. You will be close. Find something .55" thick and use it between the float and the lid while still using your breathe as fuel to get the float .055" lower than the lid. I can't be any clearer, that's as simple as I can get without puppets. You cannot set the float level upside down with the weight of the float against the pin. The newer style valves are very sensitive and will not resist the float's weight at all, period, done.
  5. Stanley, You spoiled the ending of the SU float drama. I was just trying to get Jalex to the 2 1/2 turn intermission before the fine tuning grand finale. Jalex, don't let this scare you. Setting SU floats is like eating an elephant. You can't look at the whole meal. Just take it one bite at a time. You can do it. Even with our help.
  6. Like I said before, you need a new mechanic! The needles in the carbs are the same front and rear! The 2.5 turns down is really sort of arbitrary. I would prefer both carbs were similar. IE both at 2.5 or 3.0 or 3.5 but it really won't be the end of the world if they're not 2.5 down. What matters is that the fuel level in each jet tube is the same. That is why Mark wants you to pull the domes off and visually inspect the fuel level in each jet! Yes, God bless him!
  7. Did someone say drugs?
  8. Interesting car but the writer started with a theme that didn't fit and just kept writing to the theme instead of the car, didn't he? I don't know what a Japanese Fairlady Z looked like but a lot of those parts are new and don't look "70's", even for Japan, I'd guess. The Subaru fart can exhaust tip, the newer wheels, the low profile tires, the racing seats (which he totally ignored when writing about the interior). Nice car, poor write-up. Did they use fender mirrors on 1975 280Z's? Sorry. Just back to my negative form... "Period Correct Z Perfection" is just too much though. It's not correct and it's certainly not perfect.
  9. Two hours isn't enough. It can be an all day job unless you're lucky and get them both right the first few tries. I don't think that method is the most accurate anyway. If your tang adjustment is off by 1/32" it's going to be wrong. Make the smallest possible adjustments and test with sightglass or by seeing fuel levels in the nozzles each time.
  10. update. Replaced cargo carpet since old was trash. Got rid of 50lb of bumboxes , Amps, cables, power, equalizer etc. Installed regular after market AM/FM/CD refinished Valve cover in crackle black replaced "LOUD" muffler with a Turbo, which sounds fantastic but civilized. My local Z specialist did $$$$ of work. New Poly bushings all around. New shocks. new struts. new ball bearings, steering rack, new Radiator new Rad hoses, new Batt, replaced ALL rubber hoses (fuel, air, FI), etc. cleaned Fuel tank, Injectors, all fluids. Car drives like a dream. Love the straight SIX and the 5 Speed tranny. Pulls strong. Paint has flaws. Its a 10 footer. as far as style. I prefer the 2x2 body than the normal 2 seater Z. To me personally, the 2x2 has a more proportional shape with a nice rear end hanging past the rear axle. The 2 seater is beautifull sure, but it ends too abruptly for my taste. In addition, I can fold the 2 rear seats and lots of square footage back there for cargo. Very happy with this beautifull automobile. Got lots of "thumbs up" today.
