Ignition Timing Mechanical Advance
2 pointsI don't have anything to add, just have to point out really weird it is for a person to take the time and effort to write all of his complicated thoughts down. But still cut the corners on the word "you". Makes me think of a high school kid on his phone trolling a bunch of engineers. It is on a Honda forum, but sill...just weird. Just type in the y and the o. The whole word is contained in four keys across the top of the keyboard. Just one of those WTF things.2 points

2 pointsZH, I had to pull it apart. It’s in good shape but the breaker plate was barely moving for vacuum advance lower section. There was some rust in there between plates. I have a brand new breaker plate coming from Japan so I’ll have a good unit after. BTW, those D style hun caps are worth something. I saw at least two at the JY and I can probably get them for $10-$20 each. eBay has one with 9 bids at $350. Thanks Cliff. Beers for you too! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

You missed this one, above. I left out the word "how". Those are mistakes though. The Honda guy did his on purpose. It diminishes the impact of what he's saying, dramatically. Plus the fact that he's just talking from his own opinions, apparently. Texting it out to the world on his phone. "I saw a video, do a search and u will find,", etc. He's just saying "I saw some stuff on the internet and here's what my opinion is". It's just bench-racing. Interesting reading but at the end you have to wonder, "why should I believe this guy?". This part might be my favorite - "and if u are a tuner u would know ECT/IAT move around alot in normal driving". ECT/IAT move around alot (sic) when driving...WTF? This is tuner-knowledge? Just having fun, nothing personal.1 point

1 pointI have two teenage daughters right now and they can be challenging! Do the best you can and don't damage the the long term relationship. Time will take care of the rest. About 19 or 20 they get their minds back... My oldest daughter is great to be around now, not so much as a teenager1 point

Early vs. Late Series I 240Z's
1 pointNo, but my badges are round and I don't have vented quarters. I guess it might be a 'Series 0.75' or something like that...? ? Never mind. Carry on... ?1 point

1 pointI just called the JY, told him I’d buy the tranny if he gave me all 4 D hubcaps for free. He said yes! Might do it. https://www.ebay.com/itm/14-Datsun-240z-280z-Wheel-Covers-/264658315634 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Ignition Timing Mechanical Advance
Thanks captain, this is all very interesting stuff. The 22 degs ATDC is the constant regardless of the head / chamber shape and compression. So it would be interesting to see if there is a formulae for taking into account the variables like VE, dynamic comp, chamber shapes, RPM, octane etc. I know a couple of “geeky” engineers at McLaren Cars (which is the recruitment criteria for anyone there) - I will have to put this question to them when we next have a catch up. Edit: this is a VERY good read ... https://ls1tech.com/forums/advanced-engineering-tech/586666-there-formula-calculate-ignition-timing.html1 point

Ignition Timing Mechanical Advance
Many moons ago I calculated piston speed in depth when I was poking around with header designs. I've got a file around here somewhere the documents it very well. It was a couple of computers ago and exists on a CD ROM somewhere. I'll see if I can dig that up. Right. So is there a timing number that you think is "optimum". Pick an advance at a specific RPM that you think provides the perfect 22 ATDC pressure peak and I'll plot that out. @AK260, you suggested two of them... 28 degrees @ 3500 rpm - your tuners numbers for your 10.5:1 motor. 34 degrees @ 2800ish - From "the Z world" Also when I get a chance, I'll back calculate your mechanical advance degrees into time measurements and see how that looks on a curve.1 point

Piston speed should be considered. Not crankshaft rotational speed. Unless it's a Wankel. Throw in the angle of the rod also. At higher degrees advanced the leverage on the crankshaft increases dramatically. Small pressure can overcome the inertia of the crankshaft and associated parts. Just tossing wrenches...1 point

Early vs. Late Series I 240Z's
1 pointThere were thousands of such cars. I have one in my garage. Isn't all of this just more evidence that the 'Series 1' and 'Series 2' etc vernacular is just too grey around the edges to be reliable? Attempts to subdivide into 'Series 1.5' and 'Series 2.5' etc just make it all look even more rubbery. The BIG difference is solid quarter/vented tailgate type bodyshell vs vented quarter/solid tailgate type bodyshell, and the rest was a moving feast of details depending on production date, target market and sub-variant type.1 point

Series-One Z sells for Record Breaking $310,00 USD
IF, and I say if, there was a "national car show judging". Right now, the best thing along the lines of a "national car show judging", by people who are at least familiar with Datsuns, is a ZCCA event. But then, there's no real provenance or recognition of a ZCCA Award. It's just a trophy. And the ZCCA judges are not going to compare paint color. What might make a better study is how someone comes to pay three times the car's maximum value for a car that wouldn't win the ZCCA's top award.1 point

Electro-philes: crit a 280Z HL diag.
Well if that won't teach me to stop thinking while on pain meds (recovering from shoulder surgery) - It certainly seemed okay yesterday. ? CO: I was looking at the diodes to suppress arcing from the load when the relay opens which would reduce contact damage. Not sure I ever used one across a coil, but I certainly agree coil inductance can cause trouble in certain circuits. My oversight on the 20A feeding both - I agree with you. Thanks for the corrections!1 point

Source for the Cup washers on the SU Air cleaner Wing Bolts
Quick update. Lot going on at home right now. I have a good solution going. Made the first group of 20-ish. Size is great, appearance comparison to original is pretty good. Drilling the hole after the initial forming is the only option. Any hole in the piece to start with is a) too hard to center, and tears out immediately, pretty much like the fender washers. Using a center hole in the FM part of the die makes drilling the hole in the middle very simple. Once I got the dies centered to each other consistently, I can make millions of identical little wrinkled creatures that only take about 175 finalization steps each. Easy peasy. I’ll have pictures to post of the whole process stages later in the week.1 point

Rear Spindle Pin
1 pointI finally got to try my spindle pin puller last night. I made it years ago using high quality 1" acme threaded rod and a front strut bearing. Granted, the car isn't super rusty, but it worked great. I had the RH pin out in less than 2 minutes once I got the wedge bolt out. I'm doing a rear disc conversion on my race car, so I pulled the stub axle and spindle pin. I will replace the wheel bearings and outer control arm bushings while it's apart. I was pretty happy with the job. The hardest part was cutting the peened sections off the axle nut without touching the stub axle threads. Tonight, I will pull the LH side apart and then start pressing bearings. The real test for the puller will be on the spare corner modules I have in storage. Those came off a really rotted car and they are likely going to need to be cut and pressed out.1 point

Any tips on getting the quarterlight seals to relax?
Nope, Nope, Nope, and Nope The trick it to buy longer screws or bolts and bring the window in a little at a time until you can replace each long screw one-at-a time with a shorter screw. E-Z P-Z1 point

Test report of "HLS30Q (Z Europe model) countermeasures High speed stability "
Here I let you a document that proves that you're right...even the 260's are "Q". This document is related to imports to Portugal...as you can state, 71 has 70 z's imported, 72 - 25 Z's and 73-44 Z's... But a small and little detail, the 70 Z's from 1971, only 40 were sold in this year, the other 30 left were sold during 72... Mine is from March (1971) and was registered on the 27th August. I'll send you now the title...10 minutes...1 point
