  1. Hey, I wanted to make a comment to the collective members of this forum. Sitting here trapped in my hotel in Panama....reading lots of post and questions from here and other Z forums I see a trend. The people that frequent this place tend to be very interested in helping others get these cars back where they belong....on the road to be enjoyed. Some other Z forums out there have some really harsh, condescending, self-serving members that quite frankly push people away. They don’t want to be bothered by people’s questions and admonish them for not spending hours researching a topic. It’s strikingly different in the people here. I honestly probably would have not taken on this endeavor if it hadn’t been the great people on here. The help I’ve gotten here can’t be more appreciated. I hope that I can pay it forward. I will continue to be a junkyard rat because its fun to do when I layover in various cities. A bad day in the yard is better than a good day at work. I will continue to help you all that can’t find parts you need. I’ll alway just charge you what it cost me to buy and deliver the part. My labor and risking life and limb in snake infested tall grass is free. Some if you have built up a nice beer fund. Not sure I’ll be able to afford ZCON with all this beer I’m in debt for. Thanks again [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. I've seen several videos of damaged threads from not removing the peened section of the nut. BTW, the ZX nut part number is 43262-W1200

There's a joke floating around about covid-19 but you probably won't get it.
  6. Yes, it was me. I think I did caveat it at the time. Back then it didn't seem important to get the detail right :)

I’ll pay extra for deliveries in your Z.
  8. I do hope Mr Randalla gets his kits out as I would have gladly bought one. During the dip in supply, I bought some banjos from this Ebay seller ... https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F222198287858 As it happens, by a very happy coincidence, the top of the banjo is exactly 23mm from the float bowl gasket!! Front carb ... Rear carb ... It seems that my ZTherapy carbs bought 6 years ago, survived the vibrations from the west coast, across the ocean to Blighty and all the abuse I’ve thrown at them to remain perfectly balanced as set up by ZT!

Birmingham just closed dining rooms. Take outs and drive through only. We're an hour north of there but most likely will happen here Wednesday. The waitresses are all of the sudden sucking up to the girls that cook, wanting to help them. It's funny, they normally won't speak to the cooks that are a little older. I'll start doing deliveries when they shut our dining room. The drive through is booming. Separate building thank goodness. I hope you and your employees get through this asap.

  12. After the two coats of high build primer, this is how things look. The camera doesn't like focusing on this light color - ugh.? I will need some more light filler in some spots (will it ever end?!). Will likely do that and some more high build filler in strategic spots, such as: where the body line meets the front fender arch contour... and along the fender arch on the driver side, as examples.
  13. At a reasonable $100 an hour......only $4,000 per washer. Any price break if I buy a pack of six? ?

Funny, hadn't thought of that term. Actually, I like it from the standpoint that its' intention is to build up a societies anti-bodies naturally. The science is that there may be a larger percentage of deaths in the short term, but in the long term there will be an overall greater society resistance due to the extensive exposure and fewer death in the long run. (percent is appropriate in this case as the population sizes are very different between the US and UK). Honestly, I don' think you can escape it. Between Costco, Ralphs, family, etc....we are just too connected as a people. Yes, this has crossed my mind as well, fabricated by some Gen-Xer worried about not receiving social security as they get older. Also thought it might be a ploy developed by the 1% at Davos to get the Fed Rate down to 0% so they can borrow Billions and charge 3% to the masses. 3% of billions is a lot of money. (Just thought I would increase my use of percentages here ?) OR.....don't get me started.
  17. They were indeed factory-fit parts, fitted to some S130-series Zs and other models. Nothing to do with racing. They were injection-moulded, with the better recessed type 'O-ring' gasket. I think they would originally have been painted black, and those garish blue and red versions have been painted after the fact.

    More progress from today:
  19. You might be able to make your KYB nuts work. The nut serves two purposes - centering the top of the shock, and clamping it tightly in to the tube. Some of the manufacturers just ship a sized metal ring, to fit the application, along with a common nut. Tokico did theirs that way.
  20. Where's the link? Could very well be a modern 3D printed thing.

I would have thought this should have been one of the first to close ... On the upside, the virus has created a much closer community in our road. We now have a WhatsApp group so that all the neighbours can look after each other, especially as houses turn over every 40-50 years and we have a number or elderly residents in the road. One neighbour has lived in the road for over 80 years!!! Born and bread here.

I just watched a press conference and Trump is trying to do whatever he can to keep small businesses afloat. With any luck, they can get something through congress quickly and get money in your hands right away. Good luck.
  25. It would be an N47 EFI head, for an L24, for sure, I think. But there might be two versions. Could be that Nissan changed head design and went to flat top pistons like they did with the L28. Have to dig in to it more. It's still an EFI L series. Get the part numbers from the AFM and the ECU. 77 would have a 280Z type distributor also, electronic, with an ignition module by the fusebox. Look for a cylinder head temperature sensor between the 5 and 6 spark plugs. That's what the later "M"N47 heads used. That didn't come til later on the 280ZX's. It's a fairly rare car.
  26. OK. Then I blame Jon as well. Works for me.
  27. wow, stuck in a hotel, that is the worst. I hate hotels, cant sleep well just waiting for the sun to come up. Hope you get out of there soon. With everything on lockdown I am thinking I will get to my valve stem seals to see if I can improve on my oil consumption. Its not terrible (1000/qt apprx maybe more maybe less) but it gets to be a pain to have to keep up with it between my 3k mile oil changes. The one thing that I have not looked into on the drive line is the rear bearings, I suppose 45year old grease is subject to break down and something I should look into. I am trying to put together my list for the Florida to Alaska trip. Plan to stock up on a very through supply of critical parts (rad/hose/alt/belts/WP/fuses/starter/ECU/spark modual/tire repair kit......) will add to the list as I think it thru. The plan would be to take a lot of backroads thru the states then the ALCAN highway thru Canada to Alaska. I suppose I should revisit the drawing of defrost lines, I kinda sidelined that project since never needed in Florida. I have the copper paint and resently practiced using black electrical tape as the mask. Getting the right application tool is the problem. trying to not overapply gut still get enough on is the problem.
  28. Certainly learning as we move along in the resurrection project, thanks to the wealth of Z knowledge on this site. Just a quick update. The coil spring has been safely removed with the compressor I purchased. I have the entire rear control arm assembly pulled out of the car. I am doing only one side at a time. The gland nut came off quite nicely. The LR strut had very little resistance up or down, the boot was torn and brittle, some scoring on the strut shaft, no signs of leakage, but not a whole lot of oil came out after removing the gland nut. Next obvious challenges. #1 The swing arm shaft removal. I have fabricated a pulling tool similar to the one offered at Z Car Depot. Hopefully it will work. #2 The stub axle retaining nut, bearings, and seal. The nut is obviously a use only once piece. What is the best way to remove the flattened portion of that special lock nut without damaging the threaded portion of the shaft? The one video I watched was a bit unclear but used a DREMEL tool to cut it off and a screwdriver or chisel to remove it. #3 Removing the rest of the strut. Will a slide hammer be helpful to yank it out of the tube or should a VISE GRIP work clamping it to the threaded end. I did not see any retaining rings inside the tube. My schedule required me to leave the project at this level of incompletion and will not be able to get back at it for several more days. Thanks again for all the tips and helps. Hope all are managing through the current worldwide crisis. I am following common sense precautions but mostly relying on my GOD who is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. This is exactly right. Society, atleast society in the US, is not nearly as polite as it was 5 or 10 years ago, and scared and or hungry people are very unpredictable. There are a surprising number of people who realize this and that there is a limited amount of food in the grocery store. I believe that is the main reason for people stocking up. The government isn't going to give any notice if they institute interstate travel bans or shelter in place orders. So many people don't really keep much food at home because a great many of them eat out a lot. If you think you might be stuck at home tomorrow for 2 weeks, you might like to have some food. Easy food too, if you might not be feeling great. It's just logical... It's actually refreshing to see that there are still some logical people in this country.

Got the exhaust manifold back with ceramic coating. Also picked up an air galley from JDM-Car-Parts.com. Will tap the ports and loosely install. Will do final install when motor is in car.
  31. I've been sanding and sanding, trying to get the body prepped for high build primer coats (ended up doing two plus a third on certain areas). It will be interesting to see how much more filler is required. I'm telling you, getting the filler laid on over big areas is the trick! Very little of this crap touch up with body filler is necessary if you do that. A few videos for you: One coat of Glasurit epoxy primer (basically), and body filler on top: A second coat of Glasurit epoxy primer: Lightly sanded, and some fine body filler applied in a few areas. It is now ready for high build primer coats:
  32. Thanks ZH. This was my understanding as well. So, stuck here in my hotel with nothing to do but do research, read my book and watch TV. Social isolation sucks. So I think the later ZX transmission with the stock ZX differential is the route I’m going to go with. Of course I’ll look at the 300zx differentials with the slight chance the unicorn LSD is in this lot. There are at least six 300zx’s in there, So before I left for this work trip my refurbished injectors came back from Motor Man, they look really good, actually new. The only thing I don’t like it the clamps he used. I’ll upgrade the to stainless injector clamps.
  33. Given the tough position so many of us are probably in or going to be in soon, you can have 6 for $4k. Canadian. Good news is I’ll lots of time to make plenty. Got a big sheet of 18 gauge to gobble up.

So many great points brought up by Dave and ZH. There are so many factors and forces driving the way people react. The news organizations should be ashamed of themselves for stoking fear in people. I’m back in Panama, landed at 9am this morning and unfortunately I have only two English channels in my hotel CNN and Fox News. There is nothing similar in what they report. My company has advices all persons to remain in hotel which sucks because I had planned on taking the canal tour. Things are slowing to a down here too . Last weeks the roads were nuts today...not so much traffic. People stockpile because it’s the only way they can find comfort when faced with things they have no control over. In my opinion is always good to have food in the pantry, TP under the cabinet and generals supplies, Especially if you have a family to support. People buy ammo because they fear riots like happened in LA (Rodney King) or more recently in Baltimore. You can never underestimate what desperate people will do. Our modern society has a thin layer of civility separating us from chaos. We’ve created a system that is fragile. Global food supply chain, we depend on and so many thing to make sure our stores are stocked and fuel and electricity are available. We are only 9 meals away from total chaos in modern society. I have lots of ammo because shooting is a hobby and I’m a gun enthusiast. I also have them to protect my family. I conceal carry and have a federal firearms license and can carry on all commercial aircraft when traveling. It’s great because I never have to go through security lines. In times like these it’s important to help others, be a leader in your community and be that voice of reason around the sheep. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

everything in the states is viewed thru a political lens, this included wars/natural disasters/and now medical pandemics. Its is unfortunate since the messages are often distorted by who is reporting and what there political bias maybe. The last time I can recall when this was not the case was when Tim Russert was alive. You really never knew where he came down on an issue. And then there is the 24/7 news cycle that needs to be constantly filled, there is only so much news out there. When you hear the same exact talking points being expressed you have to wonder is anyone doing independent investigating or are we just given a script that is to be repeated endlessly. Education is a BIG problem. History is told by the victors, but even then its often retold to fit what ever your team needs to hear. Back to working on my Z something that I can have an effect on.

There are a few reasons. 1. The Koreans have done elaborate testing far more that the Italians. When you test more the death rate declines, because you are confirm cases in heathy population that would otherwise not be counted. 2. I lived in Italy for 3 years. The National hospital system isn’t that great. I had to bring my own sheets, towels and other items when my daughter was born in an Italian hospital. They’re way below what you’d accept if admitted. 3. Italians are highly social people. They kiss on sides of face for greetings and are heavy smokers too. 4. Koreans are rule followers much like the Japanese. The Italian ate everything but rule followers. Getting an Italian to do anything they don’t want is difficult. It’s a cultural thing. 39. Boy, that garage is just absolutely fabulous, very jealous here. Thought I would share a couple pictures of my future garage here. Wife and I bought a place in Boise Idaho and are renting it out until we are ready to retire which is probably about a year and a half from now. Garage has 1500 sq-ft of space and a large RV section. Pretty sure I can fit all of my cars in here. Our Jeep Grand Cherokee looks kind of small in there.
  40. A bad or disconnected vacuum modulator will disrupt proper shifting. Remember a vacuum line has two ends as well as the hollow tube. I would first verify the vacuum hose, then replace the modulator before tearing into the AT again. There is no internal electronics in the AT. The only wiring is a switch for the starter enable and for the backup lights.

Well spring will be soon so lots of leaves too.
  42. Final stage, a bit of dremel work to clean up any burrs and rough edges. Scratches on the back side need to smoothed from contact area on the mandrel. Quick abrasive rub, then sandblast for consistent finish. Off to plating with the next batch of hardware. Hopefully not too far in the future....
  43. Part two. Use die to drill 21/64 hole Install on custom mandrel on the lathe and remove excess. Parted off to right length. Quick sand paper polish while it’s spinning. Flash clean up on the inner edge of the parted cut complete.

Things that made me go "OH $hit!!!!!" - full hazmat suits goggles and masks worn in China in Jan when this "first started".... when did you ever see these PPE for a new "flu"? China knew this was bad $hit right from the start AND they have the excellent digitized patient records and facial recognition to follow the paths of the early victims (which currently go back into November). - China fumigating streets! What kind of flu virus needs to be cleaned outside? Some serious $hit going down. - China steeling Ebola virus from a Canadian Level 4 lab and sending it to the Wuhan Lab just a year ago.... not an act of good will. What were they doing? - The masses of dead in China and Iran. - People catching it twice in such short time... this is not a flu!!!! - Uncertainty if mankind will ever gain immunity to this virus.
  45. Had a chance last night to go through the process and take pictures for posterity. Won’t be taking them in for plating any time soon. Get ready Use a little bushing I made to center. Squish! Cup made Turn die over, put cup underneath and squish the wings flat. Makes the machining steps easier

Unfortunately we are all paying the price of fake news and disinformation in society right now . Politics have skewed science . Also, to many variables to compare countries . China air quality , smoking population , density of population all contributors to this . What scares me is when I hear from people they don’t even watch the news anymore , so they are not informed and make decisions based on that premise . Ignorance will play a bit part too. USA will probably benefit from our supply network and variance of populated areas . Listen to the scientists , not the politicians is my 2 cents

  48. Epoxy primer applied. ? Has to be above 60 degrees for it to dry, so I'm using a kerosene heater to elevate the temperature in the garage.
  49. Thanks guys. The seals are brand new and soft and supple already, so heat was of limited effect. I also didn't want to remove them since they're already bonded to the quarterlight frames with weatherstripping adhesive. This was the winning technique: I pivoted the rear corner up and in just enough to be able to insert a thick drift punch (my "awl") through the top rear holes and draw it toward the back. I was concerned I would crush the threads but it was OK. While holding it with one hand, the other hand secured the top front screw. After having lubed the bottom of the cavity, I was able to push the bottom of the window in enough to secure the bottom two screws. What a pain.
  50. Whilst poking around inside my 4/70 HLS30UV project car the other day, I noted that the passenger floor tar mat was manufactured in a shape which accommodates the possibility of fitting an OEM passenger footrest:
