  4. According to Nissan, some 18 new improvements were incorporated into the 1971 LATE MODELS - aka Series II - the second series of chassis serial numbers starting at HLS30 21001 and HS30 00501. All 18 of these improvements were made at the Model Change Over.
  5. New to me anyway, I know they have been out there and others have them. I also got my spare ECU (after being ticked off about my spare that did not work) off ebay. Already plugged in in an works fine.

How long did this one get to spread before anyone took any action? I have read of cases as early as October 2019. They threatened the doctor who tried to sound the alarm early on. Now he's dead and they just apologized to his widow. Lot's of good that does!
  8. I'm telling you man...pull that thing right out of there. All the way. Make it naked. Grab the cable end and pull and it will slide right out. If you can't get it back in it's broken anyway. Here's one look at that end. Yours looks pretty normal. The tip doesn't have the serrations. https://jdm-car-parts.com/products/reproduction-speedomter-cable-for-datsun-240z-260z-and-280z

I watched an interesting documentary about the 1918 (Spanish flu) pandemic last night on TV. The first reported case was at an Army base in Kansas, March 11, 1918, then it crossed the Atlantic to Brest, France with the WWI American troop landings. It became the "Spanish flu" because Spain, being neutral in the war was the first to announce it on May 22, 1918. None of the powers at war, at the time, wanted to let the other side know of their vulnerability due to the flu. That flu, thanks to the war, had a full two months to spread within the troops and into the population before anyone could step in and begin to take preventative measures.

Just wait for the rebound. In modern history we’ve seen two incredible stock market rebounds after: 1987’s black Monday, 2008’s financial crisis. The one after COVID-19 will be preceded by a blood bath of bankruptcies and take overs / consolidations bur we will witness one of the biggest rallies in history. The killer is the likes of Shell, Vodafone, BP etc which are pension plays and many pensioners who live off the dividends (based on share price) will suffer hugely in the short term. :( After every forest fire there is an explosion of growth, but you have to survive the devastation first! Most of us on this forum are lucky enough to have reserves but I really feel for those living pay cheque to pay cheque.
  12. Did you look at it? You can pull the whole cable out out of its sheath and examine it. Sometimes they break in the middle. Pull it out, make sure its complete, give the ends a close look, clean it up, add some lube, and shove it back in the sheath. After they wear there can be enough room to get the sheath locked down without having the cable inside registered at its ends. I have had that happen. Like people are saying, the ends of the cable have to be set in their holes. The sheath just holds it together once you get the ends placed properly.
  13. Good news. My Panelbeater is working hard on my car atm and there's some progress, so i visited him (with 2 meters distance of course, because #Coronavirus). So the passenger floor pans are in and will be completed soon: Looking good in my opinion: To get everything aligned was a bit of a headache, even with the best parts available, but looks good now. So today i brought him the front fender. It needs the original edge line hammered back in, as some previous owner decided to hammer that flat.. terrible.. Luckily it's the kind of job my panelbeater likes ? Starts to look like a car again, doesn't it? Allthough the rocker panel needs some adjustment. View from the rear. Also brought him the hatch to adjust everything but we didn't test fit it yet. Still a few days of work to adjust the rocker panel, get the floorpans welded in completely and have the Seat rail mounts back in. But then it's up to the other side. which is luckily in much better state and i have much bigger, better and OEM Panels ready. so i hope work will be faster. I say that, knowing that my panelbeater takes his time to get it done right..
  14. Not sure.....I just threaded it on till snug, then threaded it back to the tranny, threaded it on there and amazingly it worked! Just get it squared up and it will eventually go on. (Scrapes on my arm to show how contorted I was). The job stands out right up there with removing rear driveshaft bolts and control arm pins in difficulty!
  15. I think the 3rd wire on the left side is for the key in the ignition buzzer when you open the door. Your choice to add a wire for this annoying little feature or just go with the 2-wire for the overhead light.

  18. I struggled with it when I replaced my dash with the vintage dashes. it was tough but eventually I got it all to go in. One of the member here suggested removing the tach from the attached dash, then you should have relative easy access, thru the open tach area. I did not have to do that but maybe worth considering.

  21. Disconnect it at the transmission. Then spin the cable end by hand with the speedometer end screwed on. It will screw on all the way with no pressure on the cable holding it off (edited this from earlier). Push on the cable end while you spin it. You have to get the hole aligned with the cable end. It should drop in. Then, you might have to spin the transmission output shaft when you reattach the transmission end. Worth a shot, it worked for me. I've never had the dash out of my car, but I have had the gauges out. Wait until you get to the trip meter cable. That's the tiny fingers problem.
  22. I did this a while back and the only way I could do it (as my hands are too big and not triple jointed) was to disconnect the speedo cable at the tranny and pull some slack, then pull the dash part way out, attach the cable from above, replace the dash, pull the slack out and re-attach the cable to the tranny. I must have tried this every other way for too long as I didn't want to partially remove the dash again. Unfortunately it was the only way. Good luck. Cheers, Mike

  25. You just gave me an idea! This is a GPS receiver sold by Adafruit. Adafruit Ultimate GPS It is designed to be used with an antenna and an Arduino or similar mini-processor. I already have the necessary parts and plan on using it for GPS tracking of the autocross courses. All I have to do is capture the speed signal and send it to my ECU. Easy! Thanks for the inspiration.

Great read. So we’ve lost over 18 Trillion US dollars in the market since the virus panic on Wall Street began. This is almost equal to the entire US GDP and the US total debt. All this loss in two weeks. Factories closing, widespread law offs, small business closing like restaurants. The second and third order effects are serious. So to me the government believes the virus is worse than the global economic damage and devastation to personal incomes. Most people do live pay check to pay check. All this is very destabilizing. I don’t believe we have all the facts to determine what’s happening but when you look at the actions taken you can see there is more than meet the eye here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

ZH what you are saying make perfect sense. The one difference is the data you had was accurate and verifiable. The data we’re getting is not...This I’m sure of, This is why I think there is more than meets the eye here. So, many will have a hard time hearing this but governments ALWAYS lie to protect their image and control the population . If you disagree, that’s okay but you might live in the same pen as the rest of the global sheep. I’ve seen it first hand many time and was appalled, I called it out and was shut down by very senior leadership. One example: I was the lead aircraft dynamic strike planner for Libya in 2011. I sat on the committee that approved every target and bomb that was dropped. (Well over 3,600 strikes) we had to do intelligence confirmation and validation. The NATO and US public relation strategy was simple. We had a team who’s sole job was PR. Influence the public to ensure OUR Operation could continue to meet our strategic goals, which were to remove Ghaddafi (who was trying to start an African gold backed currency to trade oil in and circumvent the US’s monopoly with OPEC of selling oil in US dollars only to the world market) (US dollars are backed by Oil, Debt and Military Power, not gold anymore) and support a Pro-US new government, What did we tell the public “we had to do this to protect civilian lives in Libya”. This was 100% BS. Libya supplies 25% of European oil and Nigeria was a big non OPEC global oil player too. Why do you think Qutar and UAE and Saudi were so interested too in Libya....because they cared about civilian? They didn’t give a crap about the millions killed in Rwanda . Do you think they gave one crap about the Libyan people? My point is you never heard this .....sure civilians were being killed and we made that the hand we showed the people, but that was the cover story. As far as COVID-19, the government must know this thing is worse that we are being told. If they tells us how deadly it is there would be abstract panic....they don’t want that. They want you to be just concerned enough to convince you to stay home,. If they tell us 1.7 million American’s are going to die (which might be true) the public would go nuts and start hoarding everything and martial law would have to be instituted. This Toilet Paper run would be nothing compared to what would happen. I could be wrong but I’m convinced the government will lie if it has to, to get done what it thinks needs to happen to keep the peace. Time will tell as this unfolds.

Totally agree with the stats not being 100% honest / correct! Given the run on the markets I doubt any government is being truly transparent. In fact the measurement is clearly a problem in the first instance as pointed out. I’ve heard and read some very entertaining conspiracy theories: 1. Our government is over reacting to a silly virus - they want to crash the system and get rid of cash so that they can track all our payments/activities. 2. This was done on purpose to reduce the older population of the planet. 3. It was a biological warfare experiment gone wrong. 4. It started in the US and spread like wildfire in Wuhan where conditions were right. The US clearly wanted to teach China a lesson. 5. The governments want to show you how much control they have over your life and now with a little virus can tell you when to leave your house or not! I just can’t see how the view below is beneficial to any government: On a more serious note, I’ve noticed much greater level of solidarity and unity in our local communities where people are banding together to look after each other. We are working on supporting low income families, ensuring food banks and packages reach those who need it the most, WhatsApp group for the entire road to ensure our elderly (or anyone) can reach out if they are in trouble, helping the less computer literate elderly set up home delivery for groceries etc. Meanwhile, at the supermarket the locusts are still hoovering up toilet rolls and pasta!!! Meanwhile in the AK household, I’m hoarding sand / cement and lubricants! The former for getting all those jobs done in the next two weeks if they close the hardware stores, the latter for getting the Z sorted and ready for the summer! As a matter of interest, the “other” lubricants you may have thought of have also had a run on in the supermarket - not that I was looking to buy of course! ;) Just found it entertaining.

I went as conservative and as far to the right as I could find and I still get 10 times worse than flu. Plus more contagious. But, as our guy at the top says "just keep saying it until they believe it". https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/03/11/dr-anthony-fauci-estimates-coronavirus-mortality-rate-at-one-percent/ "Fauci said that the mortality rate for the common flu was 0.1 percent, which meant that the coronavirus was about ten times as lethal. “This is ten times more lethal than the seasonal flu,” he said. “I think that’s something that people can get their arms around and understand.” "
  32. Very familiar with prevailing torque nuts. I believe that would work on the Z stub axles with the 2 flat sides. Are the ZX axles fully round at the threaded end or do they have the flat spots? The torque specs are quite high on the rear axle nuts. I will have to do a bit more research. Thanks again for the great tips and pictures. My struts were the originals rather than the replacement cartridge style. That is what was confusing me as we tackled this project. I wrongly assumed the originals were also cartridge style. I believe I will be purchasing the KYB kit that includes the struts and bellows. The inside of my tubes look pretty good. A bit of honing and high quality grease on the cartridges should work out well. Cleaning, media blasting, priming, and top coating the rear suspension components will be quite the project in itself. Thanks again, John.
  33. zKars, your VSS will work perfectly for the speed input to the Electromotive TEC-GT ECU on my autocross car. However, I hate to give up the OEM speedometer which I integrated into my dash. I'm looking for a pass-thru style sensor, something like that attached picture, but so far I've struck out. Another thing I learned from this discussion is the thread size of 20mm x 1.50. Thanks.

I had a general manager once, my bosses boss, who would not accept what our inventory of materials data clearly showed. That we were going to run out of a certain material if we did not change the blend ratio of the materials, using less of the one that was going to run out in a couple of weeks. The weekly inventory data had been tracked for months and charts and plots of the data clearly showed what was going to happen. I showed him the data and the plots and explained that we needed to make a minor change to the blend to avoid a big disruption. He listened and said "well, I'll believe that when i see it. My GUT tells me different". We ran out of material, had to run off-spec. and the chaos lasted for weeks. He had a Chem. E. degree from one of the big Chicagoland universities. I can still see that scene in my mind, years later. Some people just have a knack for numbers and calculation, and trust the math, I guess, and some just go off of only what's right in front of them. It's weird.
  35. I have had excellent results on now 3 sets of seats with interior innovations leather kits. If you use new foam, the fit is very tight on the final closure on the bottom and seat back. I had to trim the foam on the bottom, and add 2" of material on the closure of the seat back. First set is about 3 years now in my daily driver, still look great.
  36. So I selected the 5 speed transmission and differential today after landing this AM. A short trip to the JY and I looked at all the mileage and years and picked an 82’ with 226k miles. There was one with 186k but it was a 79 or 80 and I was worried it had the older 5 speed. (I couldn’t open the door to check the tag but it had the dizzy with the e12-80, the and older ZX tail lights so I figured it was an early one) The differential assembly was $120. I also checked at least ten 300ZXs to see if there happened to be a LSD...no luck. There was only one 88 turbo anyway. So, on the drive home I stopped by another JY to get a part for a member on here, while there I found a new Z I haven’t seen before. Engine and transmission are gone but in generally good shape for a car in a junkyard.

North Korea has 1 case. Just as believable as anything from China. Italy has their crematoriums burning 24/7. China has done this and also brought in additional portable incinerators to help out... but here are the numbers: China has 1.40B people and 3,200 deaths. Italy has 0.06B people and 2,500 deaths. China probably had >60,000 deaths.

Just kind of realized that nobody in the media is actually measuring or talking about in detail one of the key issues - how many hospital beds or ventilators or IC nurses are being utilized. And what is the available capacity? How many spots are open and how fast are the y filling up? Everyone is talking about testing and how fast cases are growing but the "No Vacancy" sign at the hospitals is what really matters the most. A chart of hospital beds filling might have some impact. They're building a field hospital at the local fairground in Oregon. It will be, in essence, in an actual field. https://katu.com/news/local/oregon-to-open-250-bed-emergency-hospital-in-state-fairgrounds

Edit - mine below is just an amplification of above. Posted at the same time. One more thing that has been mentioned but gets lost in the noise, when comparing to the flu. The common flu has a vaccine, plus people have developed immunity. So every year only a fraction of the population gets the flu. The experts are supposing that EVERYONE will eventually get COVID-19. Because there is no vaccine and because it is new. That's why it's called the Novel Corona virus. The nerdy medical researchers are doing a poor job of explaining this. And the administration is doing a poor job of explaining why it's important to slow the spread. Only so many critically ill people can be cared for at any period of time. So the "system" can't handle a large influx of patients. When you listen to them you get the feeling that "well, we'l just all get sick and the same people that would die will die anyway". But the reality is that many more people will die if they don't get proper care. So when things get bad you're going to see stories about critically ill people being sent home or being cared for in a tent, and dying because no ventilators were available. So, the personal view is "do I want a bed and a ventilator and personnel to be ready for me/my parents/my grandparents/anyone when they need it?" If you don't care, then party on the system will get overloaded and people will be dying at home while waiting. If you do then we need to put the effort in to stop the spread.
  41. And the link within the link, from CO.
  42. From Tony D : If it's been missed, remember that in TROPICAL environments the FIRST step is to put a 160F thermostat in there. That drops underhood temperatures SIGNIFICANTLY! I have recorded over 40-50F drop in some cases. Almost everything else after this point seeks to contain heat away from the injector bodies, or remove it from that area... But the FIRST step was to USE THE RIGHT THERMOSTAT FOR THE CONDITIONS PRESENT. The later S30's vented the hood to let heat out. The next step was more heat shielding and the WEBBED INTAKE MANIFOLD. (Along with a vented hood.) The third step was the Fuel Prime (concurrent with the heat shielding and webbed manifold.) The last step was blower fan, on SOME installations, where all prior steps were already taken save for hood venting on Cedrics, Glorias, Leopards, Laurels, etc.... The cars with unvented hoods got fans, some cars with vented hoods got fans (S130) On many of the UNVENTED HOOD applications, a PLASTIC VALVE COVER was used to suppress heat radiation above shielding in the unvented void, and to suppress noise.
  43. Weird snow last night. At least two windshields did this:
  44. Snow rollers, that is a quite a rare event, the conditions have to be perfect. Brisk wind, light but packable snow, temp. hovering just above freezing, I've never seen it in person. Very cool.
  45. In all my years living in various parts of Canada, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. Thanks for sharing. BTW, snow-packing in and around air inlets can be one of the most challenging aspects of vehicle design and development. It's really difficult to simulate properly in a test chamber and climatic wind tunnel and field testing can be a hit-and-miss affair.
  46. Alan is the S30 Guru.... probably the most knowledgeable person on the planet.
  47. They were indeed factory-fit parts, fitted to some S130-series Zs and other models. Nothing to do with racing. They were injection-moulded, with the better recessed type 'O-ring' gasket. I think they would originally have been painted black, and those garish blue and red versions have been painted after the fact.
  48. I do not have an answer for the teeth count, but I think you are correct as too all of the different tooth count colored cogs being different diameters as well . I am sure they compensated for the different diameters by off-setting the housing to bring the gear back in full contact with the main gear.
  49. Side note, is it not interesting, how, given the number of speedo cog tooth counts there are out there for all the various diff ratio's, (yellow, blue, white, etc), that they all mesh properly with a single toothed gear on the transmission output shaft? Crazy how they made that work.... Or are all the different tooth count colored cogs different diameters as well, so the tooth spacing stays the same? The mysteries of the universe never end.
