New Product Idea. Distributor Timing Plate Re-Design
For years, literally years and years, I have been frustrated over and over again when setting up timing on our L series engines. Whether it’s a fresh engine setup, or after removing and replacing the distributor drive shaft after routine maintenance, I’m very often off by one tooth. “So what” I proclaim, I’ll just adjust the timing by rotating the distributor a bit more. But nope, the slots in the plate are never long enough to allow that. Or I have a custom setup and need to put the distributor in a specific orientation, but can’t because the timing plate won’t line up as needed. I’ve had many customer cars in for various work, and often find the drive gear alignment is out have to sort out their timing issues. They may have been running crazy retarded for a long time and didn’t know how to fix it. I’ve often resorted to cutting and welding on extensions to the plate to give me more rotation. Ugly, but it worked. Whatever the reason, being too lazy to drop that sway bar one more time to get the oil pump off, or having a custom setup, or needing to get just the right base to suit the upgraded ZX E12-80 distributor you just bought but now can’t use, wouldn’t it be nice to just have a distributor timing plate that allows more adjustment? Maybe even cover any all possible Nissan distributor replacement options no matter your specific situation? No need to find the “right” base? Heck, just not caring if you have the drive shaft alignment EXACTLY right when you put the oil pump back on, would be worth at least 6 rolls of toilet paper, right? Maybe even a BIG jar of hand sanitizer! Not a week goes by when someone has been begging for help with getting the timing right here or on any of the forums or facebook. How often have each of us posted the famous picture looking down the dizzy hole with the correct tang orientation? You know the one. Well, I’ve had enough. I “Fixed” it. Even put an “A” and and arrow to show you which way is “Advance”. So what say you experts? Is is this worth making more of? Suggestions?4 points

4 pointsYeah, looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue. I gotta stay away from this thread. I think I've made what points I can. The big T mismanaged this badly and lied to us about it. He's in over his head, I think any of the other choices are better suited for the position. Other people might actually listen to the people around them who know what they're talking about. Nothing is ever perfect, but I think any of the other choices are better than what we have right now. Even if I have to just leave that spot blank. Because I just cant. In the meantime, I should focus on helping those that I can. Here and elsewhere. It's healthier. My kid told me today that he'd rather be poor and deal with a questionable economy than have me and/or his mom dead. Maybe he's in the minority, but that was nice to hear.4 points

3 pointsI think: The only way forward (until a vaccine is made) is for all to wear masks in public and to test everyone weekly.... I wonder how long before: 1. Leaders realize this. 2. There are enough mask manufacturing facilities to supply the demand. 3. There are enough test kits manufacturing facilities to supply the demand.3 points

3 pointsDifficult these days to speak about anything without referring to the people in charge / politicians. Especially when they perform below expectation of their position, they attract opinions. If Trump or Boris haven’t performed or lied or mislead, then that is just stating the facts I guess and part of the discussion. Much like the boobs thread, which I don’t look at, with forums it’s as much a case of if you don’t like the topic, save yourself from it by passing over and reading another thread. The thing I most like about this thread is hearing differing views from members in varying countries and learning more about who they are and what they think beyond “what do I do with this car problem”. I like the fact that some views challenge mine and make me see / think of it from another angle - how ever much I may disagree with them. I do find that email posted above particularly gobsmacking in the current climate; to try to turn the virus / world affecting issue to your political advantage. But it is symptomatic of how broken politics, elected officials and their parties are - not just in the US but everywhere else too.3 points

2 points"COVID-19, and what to do about it" now this is what we should really be discussing here. I will list what I have been doing: - maintain physical distance when I must be out - politely correct people when making incorrect statements about this pandemic - politely remind others to maintain physical distance when I notice it not being followed - check on my elderly neighbors, or others that need help - offer help to friends and others I know that are in self isolation - follow the advice of medical professionals (not politicians) - minimize needless trips outdoors - thank the first responders, medical staff, shop people etc. that I meet/deal with I write this as I work from home and feeling lucky that I have a job. Hopefully I don't seem disingenuous. Mike2 points

2 pointsI’ve decided to back out of this thread. I can’t stand the politicization of everything in my Iife...it was one of the reasons I loved this forum.. Society has managed to shove a hot political fork in every walk of my life and I quite frankly find it depressing. Political bickering just makes me unhappy. It’s divided the country in a bad way, divided friendships, communities and neighbors. People do unspeakable acts to others because someone wears a MAGA hat or someone else has a rainbow sticker on their car. It’s not want civilized, loving, and good people do. I don’t like to play in those waters. I don’t care who you love, what you believe, who your God is or who you choose to support politically. I chose to judge people by their individual character, morals and how they live their lives and this is what I teach my kids. We have one part of the political spectrum that demands “Tolerance” from others but they have no tolerance for people who don’t think like them. Any speech is okay as long as it agrees with “their” world view. We fail to recognize that most people are more alike than different. We are too busy focusing on how we differ. When we don’t agree we choose the label people to socially isolate them from society and discredit them many times unjustly with terms like Racist, homophobe or any laundry list of names. Once I realized that I have little influence on what happens in Washington and that I should spend my life force focusing on my family, friends, faith and the things that make me happy, my life is more fulfilling. I can’t watch the bobble heads on any news organization, they all have agendas and I don’t want to be told what to think. I can make my own opinions with out Don Lemon or Sean Hannity telling me what to think. Enjoy the political football. If you can’t laugh at this video then maybe you are taking things too serious. 2 pointsI guess I left this hanging . So I started the 3.2 and I couldn’t ask for a better initial start. I had to a bit of guessing on required fuel for my ECU since I upped the cc’s. I was worried about getting a good initial idle and a good AFR to properly break in the rings . She fired right off and idled at about 1500 or more for a good 15 minutes . My fan didn’t kick on so it started to get a little warm and I shut it down . Now it was time to go load the motor with a test drive . I decided to pull the plugs to look at them and dam it if I still was getting oil in #6 . So - the only thing left is the head itself . As much as I hated to do it I had to pull the head . Months later the head is still in the shop basically because the machinist has had health issues . I got a call from him here recently to come look at the head . He was scratching his head because he had pulled the guides on 6 and they were in there good, so no crack . I told him that even by the wiggle test the intake was to loose in the guide - just comparing to the exhaust side . The intake valve had more play then the exhaust . He did not have a ball gauge for that small of a guide . I stared at everything for it seemed hours and I did find something of interest . I found some scoring at the top of the valve around the seal area. Not much , but it had a bit of an edge that I could catch a finger nail on. I told him I’d find another valve and replace the guides . MEANWHILE - he had my P90 head there to be cleaned . Loosing faith in my MN for now I told him to touch the valves on the p90 and shave .080 off . Well he got that done first so guess what head is going on ! Might as well change the title of this thread to “Whatever runs” !2 points- New Product Idea. Distributor Timing Plate Re-Design
I like it. A quick fix for many who have messed up engines. It also is nice for folks who upgrade from points to ZX and didn't get the right base. Plus: Bling!2 points- New Product Idea. Distributor Timing Plate Re-Design
Could be plated, powder coated, Mac Tac’ed, carbon fibre wrapped, sponge painted, you name it. Questions, comments, etc appreciated. I can send a few of you a “test” part and you can tell me what you think if that works. I’ve been installing them on local cars, no issues so far. You can literally put the bolt in anywhere on the circumference. If the “right” spot is on a bridge, you just adjust the small bolt location to move it around enough. The only fly in the ointment so far is that there are two sizes needed. The dang distributors with points have a smaller inner and outer bolt circle than the later electronic styles. So I have a SMALL and LARGE version of this plate. Fits all the L4 and L6 distributors I’ve tried so far. Just have to have the right one. I have been thinking about a way to make one plate for both, but it means large width slots and washers to span the gaps. Works, but..... Anyway first things first.2 points- Isolation Videos/Content to Keep Spirits High: Post Something (Non-Virus) for Entertainment of Others

1 pointEven though every member of this forum agreed to keep politics on the shelf, I believe this one thread is actually therapeutic in a way. These are extraordinary times and this thread is sort of acting like a pressure relief valve I think, better to tap out a paragraph here then grow an ulcer while in isolation. Besides, there are some very insightful and objective opinions on this thread, objectivity is the first thing to fly out the window when fear sets in. Peace and good health brothers.1 point- COVID-19
1 pointSorry to see you go AV8. Nobody has to expose their beliefs on the internet though. That is personal choice. It might not be clear, but I, persoanlly, haven't picked a political side. I spend my time pointing out the failings of the person in the top office. Not because of his party, of which he actually does not belong. but because of who he is and how he is failing. That's not political. That, from what I have seen and experienced, is the main problem with politics in any discussion. People think that they have to defend everything that their "side" supposedly stands for. They don't. A person can choose parts of a platform, or all of it, or create their own concerns and see how a party addresses those. A word that is often used today is "tribalism". Individuals choose their group over their own thoughts. They look to the leader of the tribe for guidance. That's not how politics is supposed to work, in a democracy. Each individual is supposed to develop their own thoughts and vote accordingly. The "party" is just a concept that doesn't really work well. People have had concerns about the two party system for many years, because it is inherently divisive.1 point- 1976 280Z Restoration Project

1 pointHe better consider the liability with that BS. I'm in a low risk state so if I have to go back to normal and get the virus we'll be filing lawsuits out the wazoo. I like that idea. A quick browse of laser engravers that can do steel are out of the price range of practicality and $$. I may be able to find a service that does it that makes the per item cost reasonable. I know! I’ll hand engrave and sign each one. Harder to knock off. I have one of these.1 point- New Product Idea. 1 pointYeah, I found the timing to be particularly distasteful. And it's not over. I got another fundraiser email this morning. That makes FIVE fundraiser requests in just the past two days! it used to be maybe one a week. Now five in the past to days. Paraphrase the latest one? "Don't believe what you see on news stations other than F. I'm really doing a great job. Really. If it's not good news about me, then it must be fake. Send me money." To exploit the opportunity and a “let no crisis go wasted” mentality when we have citizens dying and families scared and hunkered down is totally unacceptable.1 point- 2 to 3 clicks when cold starting.
Think about the diagrams above - small voltage drops at standing mean large differences in charge state. I had an Exide battery die on me in a year. Also I’ve found that when cranking, if the volts drop below 10 the battery is weak. How old is your starter solenoid? Good to clean up the solenoid anyway if you have time on your hands - they carry HUGE currents and can get spark related carbonisation - much like the light switch stalk.1 point- valve guide seals
1 pointI guess the real takeaway is always always always check the obvious and listen when others tell you to check the obvious. I was so fixated on the idea that it could not have been an exhaust (since I KNEW I was not going to touch them) that somehow I had a mental block. Spouse suggested I should just roll video from start to finsh, then I could review my work and see if anything done out of order (like messing with an exhaust and then forgetting I did it). Guess this is why QC was developed.1 point- COVID-19
1 pointThe first couple of verses of Pink Floyd's "On The Turning Away" have stuck with me through the years and mean more now than ever before. Whenever I feel overwhelmed by the sadness and suffering we deal with as volunteers, I listen to this. On the turning away from the pale and downtrodden and the words they say which we won't understand. Don't accept that's what happening is just a case of other's suffering or you'll find you're joining in the turning away. It's a sin that somehow light is changing to shadow and casting it's shroud over all we have known. Unaware how the ranks have grown, driven on by a heart of stone, we could find that we're all alone in the dream of the proud.1 point- New Product Idea. Distributor Timing Plate Re-Design

1 pointOh yeah. One other thing. Fantastic timing. I got no less than FOUR emails today from the big T's today. For example: (State your name), We've got some big news to share. The President is putting together a team made up of only his MOST RELIABLE supporters, and he specifically asked that we reach out to YOU about joining as an Official Trump Team Leader. Trump Team Leaders will help President Trump WIN BIG in November and he really wants YOU on the team. You've always been one of the President's most loyal and trusted supporters since the very beginning so he's counting on YOU to step up. Are you up for the challenge, (State your name)? And then there are a whole bunch of buttons I can click to donate back to him. You know... send some of the stimulus money right back to him? Not this time...1 point- 1976 280Z Restoration Project

New batteries can and do fail. I would check the battery voltage first. You can find battery charge/voltage charts on the web. Low horn would/could be another indicator of a low battery . After running and shut down the battery would have been charged some and the engine is warm.1 point- Mr. Matsuo's First Datsun...Baby
