C’mon! Own up ...
3 pointsAK, LOL!! Yeah that's the one! When siteunseen mentioned dropping a marble into the door of his moms car, it reminded me of the ball bearing demo they did on the XLE. The best part is you can hear that ball rattling around in there like pachinko before it falls out the bottom. Hahaha!!! This is engineering for the inner-city driving experience.3 points

Intake water bypass question
2 pointsAnd I’m trying to desnake it a bit! I was about to go to the hardware store to get the plugs that were previously mentioned but then my dad said “or we could just weld it.” And that sounded cheaper and fun so I did that. And if I somehow messed it up, I have two others. seems solid, now I’m working on the other things that come off and need to be plugged2 points

C’mon! Own up ...
2 pointsIn high school one of my good friends had an Oldsmobile VistaCruiser with a big block (455?) in it. That thing was a tank, but lots of top end if you had room to run. Remember burying the speedometer needle more than once with 5 or 6 (or 8 or 9?) of us punks in it. It is a wonder we all survived some of the stupid things we did back then.2 points

She always threatened to put me in the trunk when I wouldn't shut up with my questions. But why? Why? Why? Why? That makes no sense, WHY!!! Then "do as I say, not as I do". I love my dog.2 points

31K Miles Series I 240Z Up for Auction on BaT - Over $100k on First Day!
I know the bidder of the $110k. I didn’t know he was going to bid, but I did point him back here to see what is being said. I think that he did. He purchased a BAT 280 awhile as a driver and is planning to back date the bumpers. He has always wanted a orange 70 to add to a couple Porsches and a Ferrari collection. He is real, not any part of a plan to raise the valve.1 point

31K Miles Series I 240Z Up for Auction on BaT - Over $100k on First Day!
Replying to siteunseen's post - I think that people might be able to hide their comments from public view also. Several that I just read have disappeared from view. Oh well. BAT is actually more of a collector's club now, not really the "bring a trailer" auction site it started as. IdahoZ replied to Rodeo but only Rodeo can see it because he's registered. It's a secret club now.1 point

Well! For all your consideration of how the Wob was going to account for the carburetors, what you didn't consider is no answer at all. Of course this speaks volumes but we are watching a sham anyway. We all know it. I find this all very entertaining. The testimonials are vomitoriously delicious.1 point

The BAT discussions are weird to read. People pop in just to say "wow" or offer obscure comments. The non-constructive ones are probably the most interesting. They should make those optional for viewing.1 point

That was 26th or HS30 asking for Captain Obvious. If you ask the BAT guys a direct question or look them in the eye they get nervous and shout "Non-constructive!", and your comment is blocked. Edit - plus CO doesn't have a BAT account, I assume. So, it really was asking for a friend. Edit 2 - or PZR just asked coincidentally, or was asked to ask. Who knows. The BAT crowd is a little cliquey. And Wob has still avoided the carb question. Plus he ignored the former Datsun dealer Spyder-man.1 point

"asking for a friend" pas·sive-ag·gres·sive adjective of or denoting a type of behavior or personality characterized by indirect resistance to the demands of others and an avoidance of direct confrontation, as in procrastinating, pouting, or misplacing important materials.1 point

Wob is reading the comments and addressing issues, squashing and dispelling, but he hasn't addressed the carburetor comment, which was seconded by someone else too. Not a good look for FIVA either, if they missed it. p.s. if I'm overposting in this thread feel free to say so, either directly or via message. I'm enthralled though, I want to see what happens next. Will Wob succeed in making the sale and breaking the quarter million dollar goal? Or will the plan be foiled by the eagle eyes and vast knowledge of the "peanut gallery"?1 point

31K Miles Series I 240Z Up for Auction on BaT - Over $100k on First Day!
I saw your note, and thank you for asking for a friend. I guess what we'll see how that is explained. I'm expecting something like... "Thanks for bringing that to our attention. We went back through our records, and saw that many years ago we removed the carbs and sent them out to have them rebuilt by a professional, and those are the carbs he sent back. They are completely compatible with the originals and we simply never noticed the discrepancy." I'm expecting something like that and if that's the case, the originals are probably long gone. One could substitute a different set of four screw round tops in their place, but they would not be the originals. So I'm expecting Innocent oversight and maybe even come with the offer to include a pair of "like originals" with the car. I'm fine with any of the cars having had a life too. In fact, I think that's part of the story and can add or subtract value. What bothers me, however, is when it appears that someone is not getting what they think they are getting (and paying for). If the price tag is sized for a beacon of originality and unmolested quality, then the merchandise should reflect that value.1 point

I do agree with the reflection comment, but the paint is just off....even the underside. My 70 Z without dealer undercoating is completely safari gold on the bottom, no black areas. Just looks wrong And the silver painted parts drive me up the wall. In my opinion, car was refreshed before storage, then left to patina/rust.1 point

I would say NO to original paint. The texture/orange peel is wrong. ...unless Nissan changed there paint process for later series 1s. In contrast, I could tell in just a few pics that the $300k car was original paint...it looks like mine.1 point

The very bright yellow paint on the rear suspension/differential mount hardware stops discontinuously at the adjacent black structural members so they were re-painted. The bolts and washers also have misaligned paint so work was done. The oil pressure sensor was also changed. The hub caps look like the Chinese fakes.1 point

'73 Restoration
1 pointThanks for that! I'm looking forward to this project, however daunting it may be. I'm almost 70 now, but unless I get dementia of some kind, I have a lifetime of using tools and processes to fix and restore things. It's not so much the 'how' with this car, as identifying from piles and boxes what is what and where they go. It no longer an option for me to have a service or somebody else to finish this car....it's just gonna be me and friendly advice where I can find it. When I had a donor car is was soooooo much easier to see how the factory did things, but that ship has sailed. It has Webers on it and the original carbs I think still remain on the original engine....I'd have to look. But the Webers were fine and I was simpatico with them. I even had MSD ignition on it....although he can't find it at present. I'm not committed to authenticity. In fact, when I had sports cars, I was more devoted to the end game than matching numbers. I just think in this instance, it would be easier for me to stay stock because of all the original literature out there. This car was plenty exciting and fun to drive before I blew the rings in the original engine. I'm not gonna drive in rallies, or show the car, or race it....I'm just gonna DRIVE it and I hope, a lot. So right now it's back in mid-MO and I'm in southeastern-WA. The restorer is tasked with coming up with a $ amount to paint the car since it's about 95% prepped. After that, I go get it....but I'm not making the journey in winter.....done that, wore the T shirt. I have no reason to take chances like that anymore and the weather can change in less than a day during a journey like that. So....we're shooting for spring sometime. All I can say is that I hope he gives me a number I can live with. Kevin1 point

Restoration of "One-eighty-seven"
Regarding replacing the hood: Early cars are known to have slightly different hoods. You should try to save it if you can if you ever plan on selling the car. Crazy Z people know about the different hood and will want it to be on the car vs. the later one.1 point

Restoration of "One-eighty-seven"
The foam does have a function. It is closed cell, so it does not absorb water. Also, if you seal the edges after securing it to the panel, no water will get under it at all. It supports the panel over the large unsupported area which keeps if from vibrating or from moving if you happen to press down in that relatively large, flat, unsupported area. Also, put the new foam piece (or reuse old) in place before doing final body work on that panel. It changes the final position of that flat area.1 point

'73 Restoration
1 pointI second Patcon's advice. Motorman7 restored my '73 to pure stock condition and we took it to ZCON Branson last year. Motorman's thread has lots of photos : As you assemble, post here with questions, and the knowledgeable folk here are sure to help. Then take it to a ZCON and really find out what you did right and wrong! 🙂t1 point

1 pointGlad you got your starter problems resolved. I wish I could give you an opinion on the spark plug non-foulers but I don't even have an educated guess. I'm not familiar with the product at all. It's cheap and I doubt it can do any harm. I'd be interested in hearing about any change if you try them. Anyone else want to chime in? Have you tried all the things that @AK260 suggested in post #15?1 point

Trouble Downshifting to First Gear?
Awesome! I have downloaded the manuals, and will put it in the slot! Thank you!1 point

Trouble Downshifting to First Gear?
The slot also determines the position of the gear since the gear is off center from the hole it sits in. So if you pushed past the slot the gear could be too deep and on the wrong axis, too far or too close, if the slot is not where the bolt is. Found a cool cutout picture of a gear installed. Different brand, same concept. http://www.gtsparkplugs.com/SpeedoGearCalc.html1 point

31K Miles Series I 240Z Up for Auction on BaT - Over $100k on First Day!
I know Mike pretty well. We see each other at a lot at the same shows. Usually we are competing against each other in the Japanese category. He does a lot to promote the Japanese car category at the higher end Auto shows which is a good thing. He typically manages the Japanese class for the San Marino motor show and is often down this way at the La Jolla car shows and at JCCS. He is pretty pleasant and honest and does a lot to support the Japanese cars. I think I met Wob briefly at the San Marino show where I also saw this car. The owner (Wob?) left his lot boy with the car and the lot boy knew very little about what original Z cars are supposed to look like, so there wasn't much to talk about. Sounded like Wob had a lot of nicer cars such as Ferrari's and Porsche's per the lot boy. Owner (Wob?) showed up at the end of the show, asked lot boy if they'd won an award and then told him to load up the car. Car did not place FWIW.1 point

31K Miles Series I 240Z Up for Auction on BaT - Over $100k on First Day!
Somebody at this place, Malamut Auto Museum, must know something. "Wob" bought it from there, apparently. Odd that it's in Thousand Oaks CA, but the car was titled in Nevada. A way around CA titling problems, probably. The "Museum" (basically just Mike Malamut's huge car collection), has a different 1970 240Z. Maybe the replacement for the one on BAT. Anybody know Mike Malamut? Or Wob? Doesn't really seem like a survivor, more like a reviver. Brought back from the dead. Probably in pretty crusty shape after the first 21 years of storage. http://malamutautomuseumfoundation.org/the-collection/japanese/ http://malamutautomuseumfoundation.org/ https://www.facebook.com/Malamut-Auto-Museum-1122168147860406/1 point

31K Miles Series I 240Z Up for Auction on BaT - Over $100k on First Day!
It appears that many comments are vetted by admin and weeded out before publication, whilst certain 'known' characters get free reign and treat BaT like it is their own personal club. Some of the loudest voices on there clearly don't know their stuff. This 'MRM' character bumped up the bidding by 85k in one bid, then passed comment on it being a '200k car'. Is it only me that finds this kind of behaviour totally lacking in credibility? This is not the technique of a smart buyer, nor the action of an informed marque enthusiast. Apparently this same guy owns the 432 that just won an award at ZCON 2020, so it figures that he doesn't actually know what he's looking at. Seems like the ZCON judges don't either. These are all symptoms of a bubble that is inflating too quickly.1 point

Intake water bypass question
1 pointZedhead is on the money - my original braided hose from the thermostat housing to the carbs blew and I had the most beautiful and dramatic under-bonnet recreation of Jellystone park! That is what turned my attention to the question, do I really need this superfluous water routing!? As for the Y pipe, I kept mine but blocked it with some 15mm copper pipe plumbing end stops. They are just the perfect diameter to hammer in and for good measure I added a tiny bit of solder - which really wasn’t necessary but I sleep better with it there! Spray the whole thing with silver VHT paint and it looks the part! Siteunseen - nothing wrong with a functional engine bay! It’s how she drives that counts!1 point

31K Miles Series I 240Z Up for Auction on BaT - Over $100k on First Day!
I've done the same thing on my car during the summer, the engine coolant when at full temp will transfer that heat to the heater core and that radiates into the cab. Although I would not be surprised if the heater valve leaked as well. BaT always says "shows" unless the seller has rock solid documentation of the mileage. That pristine drivers seat says 31,000 miles. I'm not saying the car is this or that but with the price going higher and higher it is just a matter of time before cars that have been doctored start showing up.1 point

31K Miles Series I 240Z Up for Auction on BaT - Over $100k on First Day!
Well I got no dog in this fight, but I really don't think that's original paint. There's just too many flags all over the place. In the auction, they never say it has original paint. They do, however, say the following: "The seller reports that a scratch on the right fender and paint chips on the right door were blended in. More than 45 paint-meter readings provided in the photo gallery below show thicker measurements in the aforementioned areas." So what does that mean exactly? To me, that means "We took paint thickness measurements from all over the car and everything looks about the same thickness with the exception of the right side door and fender. Seller reports that those areas were sprayed to fix some issues." I don't think that means the rest of the car is original... All that means is that the rest of the car is CONSISTENT. Like maybe the whole car was sprayed at least once some time in the past, but then the right side was done again? Makes me wonder what the paint thickness would be on a confirmed original paint survivor. Would it be half the thickness they got all over that car? I saw the heater core looped too and I'm guessing the heater core is leaky.1 point

1973 Rebuild
1 pointI woke up this morning and had a flash of a realization that I am wasting my time cleaning up my proportioning valve because I am putting discs on the back, so I need to put an adjustable proportioning valve on the car. Naturally I have a bunch of questions as a result. First, is there a Nissan adjustable proportioning valve out there? It seems that everyone is using the small Willwood one. Second, is this larger Willwood valve actually meant to replace the distribution block (middle in the photo below)? I have read here that this should be kept factory original. Third, I have a '73 made in July, which has the proportioning valve in the engine bay (bottom in the photo below), 280z style, and the small t-block (top in the photo below) that will be left alone. These are my parts: I’m thinking of going with a valve from Tilton because it has 10mm ports and I won’t need adapters. Anyone have any comments? It’s not super pretty but I’m concerned about failure at unnecessary connections.1 point

1970 240Z my personal dream car – project TOSBO
A dream came true, again. I acquired a second Datsun 240Z. At the end I couldn’t resist any longer and had to buy this yellow beauty from my best mate!So back in December 2019 my mate Yves decided to sell his series 1, what a bad decision. I hesitated to long, and it was pretty much sold. But as there was a mishap with the buyer, I’ve been given a second chance and now it’s mine. Couldn’t be any happier. So here it is how I bought it: Cool story, back in 2004 (or was it 2005) this particular car was my first real encounter with a 240Z. I knew since my first 350Z ownership in 2003 that I would love to own a 240Z, but as they aren't really common here in Europe this yellow and a purple one which was parked just next to it where the first S30 I really laid my eyes on. Even took 3 picture of it back then, so here is one of them. And yes it's 100% the same car my best buddy bought about 13-14 years later. 1970 series 1 240Z, 4-speed, originally in universal blue, but refinished 30+ years ago in yellow. Still has its original engine. Was mounted with triple Webers when I bought it. Original owner’s manual, 30 years of history documents,… Missing just a few series 1 details like the fan, radiator,… As for the owner history of this car I did a bit of research: 2020-infinity: Mine 2017-2020: Yves M. (Luxembourg-Europe) 1999-2017 : Gilles K. (Luxembourg-Europe) 1989-1999 : Hans-Juergen Boeling (Hamburg/Germany-Europe) this P.O. imported the car from the USA. He did a resto and decided on the colour. It’s RAL1028 Melon Yellow. Succesfully contacted, nice old guy, creator of his own sports car brand: Interclassic Cinco Z 1970-????: Original owner. Mr Theodore/Ted G Alexander from Phoenix AZ (would love to have his contact details to complete the cars history) But why a second S30? Why not ? I always wanted to build my personal dream car from the ground up. So this will be a nut&bolt resto, I can/will do everything myself exept for the bodywork. It will get a serie 1 color. Not 100% decided yet, but most probably 907 racing green, if not it will be safari yellow. It won’t be a purist or concours car, I love driving these cars to much. So just as my blue one it will have some upgrades like seats, suspension, swaybars, drivetrain, wheel&tires. Nothing crazy! And while this project is happening I will still be able to enjoy 240Z driving in my blue 73. From our annual trip through the alps. Been 3 times, it's always a 4-5 days roadtrip with friends. Approx 1600miles an +20 alp passes per trip More to follow soon.1 point
