What is your most valuable 'made-it-myself' tool?
I don't know if this qualifies as a tool but it's going to be very useful to me, My shop has a bit of a slope leading up to it. A car that is running can just drive in but most of the cars that come in can't do it under their own power so I tow them up with the lawn tractor but have to stop 10-15 ft. away, then hook up tow straps and pull the car in with a come-along. A long and tiresome job, so I picked up a 12v 3,500 lb winch, built a base for it, hook it up to a battery, hook the battery charger up to it and turn it to Start. Lots of juice flowing and pull the car into the garage in seconds. I love it! Less work for my old back.4 points

Welding sugar scoops to fender
3 pointsExactly what I did on my car. I really like the look and have (somewhat surprisingly) only seen a couple other cars where it's been done. Probably not great for the value of the car since it's not original, but my guess is Nissan would have made them this way if they could have. Hardest part of the job is not banging the fender into something when moving it around in the garage...the headlight bucket adds a surprising amount of length! Some photos in my build log starting here: And two pictures I took today after finishing the repairs from a fender bender last summer:3 points

[2021] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?
Went down to the Goodwood festival of speed yesterday. The Z got a HUGE lot of attention anywhere and everywhere. Sadly on the hill climb race with vehicles ranging from a 1906 car with 60bhp to 80s and 90s F1 cars to the R32 drift car, there was a rather sizeable crash of a Chevy NASCAR. So to entertain us while picking up the pieces, out came the naughty Jaguar. But this!! This for me was a cherry on the Jag’s cake - such incredible car control ... and self restraint by the marshals!2 points

[2021] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?
I took the Z to our local "Worship" car meet. When the local Cars and Coffee (known as Caffeine and Octane here) got too big, some people started a smaller show for the same time slot that attracts more of a "car people" crowd. Anyway, there were 8 S30s there with the 280Z being the most prevalent. I got to see @jonathanrussellfor the first time in about 4 years, too.2 points

What is your most valuable 'made-it-myself' tool?
This has nothing to do with Zs but Stihl equipment. They've gone to a new carb tool they won't sale you, bat rastards, for adjusting the high and low settings. After a month of trying to save a dollar I found what works at Harbor Freight. It's a screwdriver set with a 4mm tool you need all the rest are just a bonus in my thinking and I must offset everything with a positive spin. Wacko I know, I get that every other day. https://www.harborfreight.com/16-piece-precision-screwdriver-set-4143.html1 point

Welding sugar scoops to fender
1 pointLet's not forget that the sugar scoops on first couple model years were fiberglass, not metal. Must have originally been easier, or less expensive, to make the curved pieces out of fiberglass than stamp them out of metal. I imagine that stamping a one piece metal fender with included sugar scoop would have added complications.1 point

Welding sugar scoops to fender
1 pointI'm pretty sure making the fender and sugar scoop two separate pieces was a cost cutting effort by Nissan, making them one piece is a good look IMO but if it isn't done perfectly it looks terrible. Once they are welded you'll have to spend extra time and effort with a hammer/dolly and a long board sanding block to make sure there are no traces left of the seam.1 point

Started getting the 72 ready for the engine swap. Removed the exhaust, drained fluids, disconnected stuff underneath. Next weekend I hope to get it in position to pull the engine out.1 point

What is the best carpet kit for my 1976 280z
As Zup has mentioned in the past, check with Jim at Chester & Herod Auto Carpets in El Paso TX. They have supplied his carpet and mine. Been in business a very long time. Have all the patterns for the Z cars. You can even get the carpet in wool. Another of the many helpful Jim's in the world.... For the OP's 280, I believe cut pile is oem, not loop like the 240's had.1 point

Another Suspension Rebuild
1 pointCleaned up the rear wheel wells with soap and a scrub brush, turned out pretty good. Dealing with the mustache bar now, to get the differential in place so I can adjust the bushing on the new TC front mount I bought. I've read a few mustache bar links here, pro's and cons of replacing the bushings, the nonexistent serrated rubber washers, etc. The bushings in mine seem good, not too hardened, so I don't want to replace with poly for now. The washers on the other hand, not so fortunate. While cleaning in my solvent tank some of the rubber nubs fell off, and a few were already missing. I know these are no longer available, but was wondering if anything has changed in the last couple years since those last posts? It seems to me that these washers only come into play as the differential attempts to twist, and there's an 1/8" gap between them, IMHO they're just added insurance in case of complete bushing failure. I suppose with a healthy engine there would be occasional contact, especially with new soft rubber bushings. I could be wrong. Anyway, just wondering what others are doing for the washers for the stock rubber bushing setup. Fabricate your own? Motor mount washer substitution of some sort? Use as is and forget about it? On another note, I wish the TC mounting bracket had a little more clearance next to the brake/fuel line bracket! I did ground out a little notch for added room, but just another 1/8" more in that dogleg bend would have been really helpful. I had to use a bottle jack to wedge it into place. [emoji53] And, got most of the fasteners decently plated using my home Caswell system, not perfect. About 4 hours work here for cleaning and plating.1 point

[2021] What Did You Do To/with Your Z Today?
Took it out for a 30 minute drive. Broke the ceramic pads loose, no squeaking , burnt the older fuel in the float chambers and the delivery system. Heated the tires up to keep any flat spots away. Italian tune up! Everything's working good so I'm happy for another month or so until I do it again. Weather's nice down here for a change. You NW folks are experiencing what we do every year I've read. Sorry about that but it's El Nino acting up a lot sooner than normal. They say "going to hell in a handbasket" around here when there's no end in sight.1 point

New Vendor to me
1 pointAs I understand it, he is swamped with apparently upgraded responsibilities at the Nissan and other dealerships and has had to step away from his love of supporting the Datsun community. I last bought parts from him over 2 years ago, then tried to buy lash pads, and basically never heard back. I believe he’s quite distraught at the situation but is unable to do much about it. Seems like it was a pet project and he is not willing or able to assign someone else to take it on. Best we just assume it doesn’t exist for the time being. Since he hasn’t taken the site down, let’s take that as hope for the future. He helped many many people and has an excellent reputation.1 point

COVID-19
1 pointMy best friend pretty much went ballistic when I told him that's what I do (ignoring heavily leaning media). At that time I had a discussion with him during which I illuminated the many, many ways the media feeds you what they want in order to control your thinking. He got really mad. I've always known it's a bad idea to confuse an issue by bringing up relevant facts. Facts are difficult to deal with, while supposition and postering are so much more entertaining. Another friend chastised me a while back (2019?) bc I wasn't fully wound up calling for action when the Somalian refugees were seeking asylum. At that time I explained that their plight was going to be improved by MY attention. When I asked her a few days ago how were those refugees, she said she didn't know. Right. I pay attention to and help where I can for a lot of things, just not all the things dangled in front of me by the mass media.1 point

COVID-19
1 pointSame. I havent watched the news in almost 10 years, and now its getting to the point you cant even read it. You seem to do what I adopted about 2 years ago. Go out to the shop, put come CDs in, mow the grass, etc etc. Keep the faith and still go to the ballot box. America is going through a cultural revolution, albeit a weak one, this will pass, or collapse under its own weight.1 point

Reproduction E-Brake Cable failure -70-78 Z
That is the one from Thailand I was referring to in my email discussion with you. Unfortunately he doesn't sell wholesale or bulk. We hope to have some additional options (much less expensive than the actual reproduction version we currently sell) available soon.1 point

Reproduction E-Brake Cable failure -70-78 Z
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DATSUN-FAIRLADY-260Z-280Z-PARKING-HAND-BRAKE-CABLE-EMERGENCY-/151459145571 from AK260 above. I ordered this cable from ebay as suggested above to check it for fitment and quality. I am very very impressed. Ordered Jun 23, arrived July 5th. Paid $102.53 CAD shipped and customs fees paid. Design is nearly identical to the OEM cable. Even came with a new pair of pins for the wheel end. @Joseph@TheZStoreI would suggest considering investigating if you can source these cables. Highly recommended them.1 point
