Is a L28 Internal or External balanced? new flywheel?
Spraying soap thingy. You are way above me. I can only read English, you can do Dutch and English. Party on! Oh yeah, spaying is what we do to female animals to keep them from getting pregnant. It's way better than males, we cut their testicles off. My boy dog doesn't have anything to lick and when I was a kid we were so poor if I didn't have testicles I wouldn't have had anything to play with.3 points

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
2 pointsHi Kats, I'm still having trouble getting a full set together. I now have 3 narrow Kobe Seiko mag wheels and 1 wide wheel, so I need either 1 more wide and 1 more narrow. I did find a wide 1 on YAJ! But was outbid by someone on the East Coast of the US of A. I have a possible lead on another lot but haven't pursued then yet as I'm sure the asking price is outside my budget. So the M-speed ones will give me a complete set and require less special treatment.2 points

Is a L28 Internal or External balanced? new flywheel?
Good info, thanks for sharing but WHY do they do it? It's like that redneck flat tire joke, "guy pulls up and sees a lady standing by her flat tire and says you gotta flat tire? No, I let the air out." My dog has no balls and now a tatoo to prove he has no balls.1 point

My uneducated guess would be literally cutting off the source of hormones that can have a negative effect on behaviour.1 point

Why don’t they just give the boy dogs a vasectomy? Then they would still have the gonads hanging there.1 point

Drivetrain Upgrade (clutch, trans, LSD, etc)
It can't be direct drive and overdrive. Just saying. You can check pretty easily with the rear wheels in the air. The direct drive gear will cause the propeller shaft to move exactly in unison with the crankshaft. Put a wrench on the crankshaft and a marker on the propeller shaft and see what happens when you turn the crankshaft.1 point

S20 air boxes
1 pointJust a few references for understanding of the air box .Please enjoy the pictures. Z432 and GTR , both S20 had same design change for the emission (pollution? ) from OCT 1970. Before that , blow-by air was released to atmospheric air pressure from the top of the valve cover , and the right side of the engine block . After OCT 1970 There are tubes which are connected from the air box to the valve cover , and the engine block oil separator. You can see the oil pan and assorted parts difference on both S20 engine. S20 air boxes
1 pointThat is also true for the battery tray and cover , I have seen so many Zs have lost their covers and trays . I can say 99 % of cars which I saw in person or in magazines lost them . Nowadays cloth braided hoses , wire hose clamps , rubber pieces those are available on line , but the battery hardware is very rare to see especially for Fairlady Z cars. Kats1 point

Datsun-240z Vs Fairlady-z432
1 pointNice collection Gavin , hope you will get other Works wheels soon . Do you know another reproduction wheels are recently available in Japan ? It’s design came from a well known Works wheel , just make it narrower and smaller . https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/j1030354322 Watanabe has intermittently been reproducing this Works design in 15 inch , with much wider rim both magnesium and aluminum. But this time who is making it? 14 inch with 7J is just right for my taste . Kats1 point

Drivetrain Upgrade (clutch, trans, LSD, etc)
@blodi pulling the rear cover off can be a pain in the arse because of the mustache bar. You could do this: 1. Calculate the diff ratio by spinning the wheels see https://shiftsst.com/blog/post/how-to-determine-the-rear-axle-ratio.html 2. Drive the car around, holding the speed constant. (use a GPS to get the speed car the Waze app has this information on the screen) collect GPS speed vs RPM for multiple gears 3. Get an tape and measure the wheel diameter in the rear 4. Come back and we can use some speed vs RPM calculators to figure out whats gear ratios the transmission has. Doing this is will probably be the best in order to figure out what diff ratio you want. I think 3.7 is a good option for a car that sees highway use. Once again its the LSD aspect that's the troublesome part.1 point

I don't think that you really know what your ratios are. No offense. Unless you have tiny wheels. The black gear is the 3.54 gear so should give the correct speedo reading. I don't know that the "Nissan comp steel synchros" has standard 280Z ratios either. The ratios you wrote look 280Z but I don't know that there is a "Nissan comp" 5 speed like that. What would be the point? No offense, the numbers just don't fit together. You said you'd like a bit less RPM at highway speed but then said a 3.9 diff might be good. That's going the other way if you really do have a 3.54 now. Also, general warning, beware of California Datsun purchases. His track record is poor.1 point

Drivetrain Upgrade (clutch, trans, LSD, etc)
You'll be up there in the RPM at `highway` speed, whatever that is in your area... I usually drive the car at 70mph street and highway. I've had a hard time finding a STI r180, consider that most if not all of them are will be used, and probably need a rebuild. I started sourcing r200 diffs personally, but finding the pinion ring at 3.7/3.9 can be a challenge, mfactory // EBAY LSD seems like good alternatives. The gearbox should mate up and fit, for the flywheel I like the `fidanza` brand, i went with a zx turbo clutch which was larger, but retains a stock feel when mated to a light flywheel, its comfortable. the close ratio gearbox might be hard to source, you can also look at finding a 240sx gearbox and getting the bellhousing modified. Or a cd009 w/ modified bellhousing.... The lack of rear ends kinda sucks... almost feel like doing the work to put a ford 8.8 in the rear, more selection, cheaper price.1 point

S20 air boxes
1 pointKats, It's always interesting to speculate what happened to all those Z432 air boxes. So many cars I've seen have them removed, so they must be sitting on garage shelves somewhere. Or more likely thrown away 30 years ago during spring cleaning, along with the even-less-often-seen "Guide Assy air Intake" 62590-E4201 that Nissan made in order to route fresh cabin air around them. (edit: apparently, you're not allowed to write "a-s-s-'-y", as it gets auto translated to "arse" by the message board. )1 point

In my neck of the woods throwout and release means the same thing. And the special washing machine is called a chemical vat at our machine shops. But your's could have been some kind of ultrasonic thing like for transmission parts? How you like me now? Party on Wayne!1 point

Series I antenna
1 pointBeautiful car Mike! I have a question, the difference of the length of the mast, and mounting. Pleaee see 12/1971 orange 240Zand 06/1972 maroon 240ZG, 240ZG has a long mast. It is possible that this ZG have had the aerial replaced at some point, but it looks like pretty original. And mounting point of the floor, there are two holes for the retaining screws, and what it makes me wonder is, these holes for the long mast are already existed from the early days. My orange 12/1971 has exactly same mast and mounting like my 01/1970 & 03/1970 cars. What do you think of this? Kats1 point
