  1. Great photos! As far as I am aware, 8D-420 was never given a road registration and was purely used as a Works rally team test car in Japan, and mostly on Nissan's off-road/rally test ground near Mount Asama. One of its interesting features was a full six point roll bar. Apparently the front bars dropping down from over the doors and following the A pillars were felt to be too intrusive (certainly for occupant legroom and comfort, but possibly impairing vision too) and were dropped for the following cars, so they only used the main hoop and two vertical drops. None of the early lightweight rally 'test' cars survived, to my knowledge. Some parts were recycled back into the system at Oppama, with 'shells 'written off' the ledgers and broken up to keep the accountants happy. Nothing would make me happier than the discovery of another long-thought-lost example, but the possibility seems very remote. One from the collection: Testing on the Mount Asama course.
  2. all done, lost the plastic pins on the rivnuts but other than that no drama and fits great.
  3. S20 - wow that would be a great project- but certainly manageable. A long time ago I *briefly* considered converting a clapped out KPGC10 from RHD to LHD, but I quickly came to my senses. An S30 conversion would be much more straightforward. Assuming you had all the prerequisite pieces- engine, mount, bellhousing, etc - there is not too much to fabricate. Custom Manifold, probably. Maybe a little electrical redesign. What else? (edit: I'm just talking making an HLS30 with an S20 powerplant, of course. If the goal was an LHD Z432-spec, then there are a few more things to do)
  4. maybe this is common knowledge but if not, I found the part 21200-ET01A is a perfect fit (just remove the rubber gasket it comes with) 82c T stat for use in then L28. this one was in stock at the local dealership if you are in a hurry. it looks like 21200-P7901 is the one you find when searching
  5. Yesterday, my #2146 did a fuel dumping at Fukumoto san’s work shop , the fuel was so stink , and very sticky. Just a little inspection by fiber scope , I see some rust in the fuel tank. Now I am thinking an old pipe dream again. Or do I stick with a stock ? I tend to think having fun with a S20 . Kats IMG_3941.MOV
  6. Yes, There are two round plugs but I think SteveJ means the big one. You can see the fastening screw on the bracket in your picture. Can't remember but I think that the big plate is removable, exposing all of the goodies underneath.
  7. No you should have the externally regulated 60A alternator, 23100-N3303, in your car. The round plug in your last photo is the VR. Your ground wire at the alternator is looking a little green. You might want to find some Caig Deoxit and spray it down good. Heck it wouldn't hurt to do that on the connector for the VR and the T connector at the alternator, too.
  8. Did you do a wet test? If you add a little oil to each cylinder and retest, if the numbers improve, it's rings. Could be worn or poorly seating... PS: always hold the throttle 100% open when testing. Not doing so, will give lower numbers
  9. 8D-420: This is only the second picture I've ever seen of this specific car, so I know very little about it. Visually and appointment-wise, it shares much with the other 1971 Monte Carlo cars, including the center console switchgear layout. That said, it's missing a few components as well that were installed on the cars that actually rallied. Just based on my limited knowledge, I'd venture to say that I think the same as you: that this was a 1970 test mule the Works team used to try things out, and it probably never actually competed. Perhaps Alan knows a bit more about it. I wonder what happened to 8D-420. I can also only dream as you do, that it was saved from the crusher, and ended up safely tucked away in a warehouse somewhere.
  10. Hi Keith , Mr.Uekubo is a very passionate about Z cars , but not so interested in showing his work. But he had been taking pictures step by step , and they became into a big photo album . I was so amazed by it . Now I have got my another blue on blue , I may not be able to do like Mr. Uekubo , but trying to do myself as much as I can . First , cleaning inside , found some coins and tickets. Maybe someone thinks me I am idiot smiling about these fatale broken seats . But for me , they are an early “ thick padding “ seat backs which has so beautiful shape .And they are blue ! For me This is for the first time ever seeing blue original seat actually . My previous blue car already lost blue seats when I purchased, so I was waiting for this opportunity since 2000 . I am so excited . Kats
  11. You can say all you want, but the racing record is here in America. Sure the Z was raced in "other" countries, but the record number of overall victories and consecutive championships is here - home of good-'ol Meric'n Enginuuity. Call us cowboys, but we know 'zaclly' what to do with a soft, voluptuous spinner like an HLS30. Too bad they don't have Corvettes and Mustangs to blow off in England or Japan. Sure, any red-blooded Yank loves the sophistication of the foreign Fairlady, but we did just fine with our imported babes.
