    I wonder what the reserve is? Did everyone notice the rally clock? A lot of work and money to get that car back on the road, which is a shame because there wouldn't be too many RHD Fairlady Z's in the US would there?

    Kats you are a perfectionist. I love to see someone who lines up all the heads of their screws. A small detail to some people but what a difference it makes.
  5. Isn't the starter on the auto's a little higher in torque value than the manual? I know they are different but I can't remember what exactly.

    Well here comes my apology. The lengths of the rods becomes so easy when you start thinking latterally and taking everything into cosideration instead of believing everything you read. All L series pistons have the same piston pin height of 38.1mm. L14, L16 & L24 engines share the same bore size of 83mm. L16 & L24 rods are 133mm centre to centre. An L24 IS an L16 plus 2 cylinders. 16 divided by 4 times 6 = 24. The stroke difference between the two is only .4mm L16 stroke 73.3 L24 stroke 73.7 So if we look at all the above if an L14 had a rod length of 133mm with it's shorter 66mm stroke the compression ratio would be way too low. To cut along story short if you take the info above and do all the sums an L14 rod comes in at approxiamately 136.7mm I apologise for any missleading info or confusion I have started but I feel better now that I have corrected this.     Hi everyone, Well for the second time today I am totally confused. I have 2 books that list the centre to centre length of L14 rods as 133mm. The only rods I am aware of that are longer than 133mm are: L20B at 145.9mm The above rod is unuseable on L6 engines because the big end is 5mm larger in diameter. L13 rods are 139.9mm and can be used on L6 cranks. As I said I am confused on this and if my info is incorrect I hope someone can correct it as I don't like giving out the wrong info. I won't share the first confusion of today for fear of putting everyone to sleep. Alan.

    Cam, Where did the engine come from, have you seen it running, has it been rebuilt. More information on the engine is required before much help can be given.

    Rod lengths for L series engines L13 139.9 L14 133.0 L16 133.0 L18 130.2 L20A 128.0 L20B 145.9 (can not be used on L series 6cyl cranckshaft) L24 133.0 L26 130.2 L28 130.2 Hope this helps those that want to interchange parts.

    I can confirm the length when I get home from work but I do know that the L20A rods are not 133mm. L14, L16 & L24 are all 133mm. Alan.
  11. On an Aus delivered 77 260 carbied car the water temp switch is actually part of the fuel system. Under the drivers seat there are two relays, water temp relay and alternator relay. These two relays are connected in series and activate the fuel bypass solenoid, next to elec fuel pump. The water temp relay cuts off current to the bypass solenoid when the coolant temp is below 35 deg C it gets the reading from the temp switch. The alternator relay cuts off current to the bypass solenoid when engine speed is above 400 rpm. Because these relays are connected in series with the bypass solenoid, the solenoid will only operate when the engine is operating above 35 deg C and running below 400 rpm. I would think it does a similar job on the 280 but i'm not 100% sure.

    nixcars, L14 rods only came out with 8mm rod bolts, why not use L16 rods. From 4/72 L16 rods came with 9mm rod bolts. L24 rods also had the 9mm rod bolts (other than the Maxima 82-83 L24s, but the big end and piston pin bores were different sizes anyway). I don't know what you are doing just thought these other rods would be easier to get hold of than the L14s.

    From my understanding of the different engines, L20 4cyl L20A 6cyl L20B 4cyl You can use rods from L20 and L20A but the big end on the L20B is a bigger diameter. From memory isn't the stroke on the L20A is 69. something mm, with a bore of 78mm. Hope this helps.

    I've seen this happen when running uninstalled air craft engines. It happens a lot quicker and the air does get noticeably thinner.

  17. With the engine off, deplete all the vacuum from the booster by pumping the brake pedal. Start the engine with your foot on the brake pedal and if everything is working your brake pedal should move towards the floor.

    Having lived in the Northern Territory where there is no open road speed limit, it was very rare to get me over 140kph in the car anyway. On the bike on the way to work however it was a different story. A group of us tempory Australians would meet up just outside town (Katherine) and race to work at Tindal, often hitting speeds of 250+ kph. I haven't ridden a bike since the day my son was born as per my wifes recomendation.

    Yes it is easier for us to get these seats down here but they don't come up very often. There's a set on Aus ebay for $800 ($624US) and he'll ship internationally. It would be nice to stay with Nissan seats rather than going to aftermarket seats. I'm weighing up the cost of recovering against getting some seats that are going to be more comfortable.

  21. The PO must have cut the wires off the two solenoids. Each solenoid has a blue and black wire coming from it to a four pin connector.

    Hi Alan, This may be something interesting. On Chloe's list of manual brake pedals she lists one as ?/77 6Y17 I have an auto brake pedal from an Aus delivered 2/77 260Z with 6Y17 stamped on it. The pedal also has two more numbers stamped just behind where the foot plate is welded on, which are 99. Does anyone else have these two numbers down the bottom of the pedal? Alan P.
