3 Z's...That's it...for now
I about pulled the trigger on Z #3 Wed. The Wichita craigslist went like, 70 240Z, must sell by Fri., clear title, runs, just install tranny and clutch. $500. Looked ok as far as photos go. Then I talked my self out of it till noon. It was gone by then. I would of had to find transport, that day, as a foot of snow was predicted and received Thursday. I don't need another car in my condition, although I could of made a little money. There must of been something about the 73 and the trailer hitches. It seems like every one I have noticed is on a 73, or the majority anyway. Mine came with a chrome one, very snazzy. It worked very well moving me back from college pulling a U-Haul, smallest enclosed they had. Kinda squirrel-ly above 55, but that was the limit then. Bonzi Lon

Jumping in with 2
A length of chain works well, no marbles to loose. Use a mirror on a stick in the filler hole and a light source in the float hole to view the tubes behind the baffle. The old o-ring, several quart Mason jar lids and the sending unit clamp will seal that hole. The filler tube was covered with a large piece of inner tube, secured with a hose clamp. Bonzi Lon

How to clean the console
If you want to try something that is NOT a permanant type paint, you might try KIWI shoe polish. I used it on all interior black parts, kick panels, sills, console, seat belt covers, even the 37 year old door gaskets. Did not do the dash and glove box cover, that is next. My console was rather grey looking, not any more. Huge difference for little effort. Just like shoes, wax on, wax off, polish to remove the residue. Bonzi Lon

70,000 miles!
When my 73 project started it had 18,470. In two years it has gone to 23571, about 5000 miles. That number looks nice on the odo. Of course that number is 123,521. HLS30-00110 has 103,000, that is on the title since 1978, hasn't moved much. The 68 Roadster has 58,XXX, need to get that running again for spring. Forgot to tell you guys, I got a 71 521 pick up with 84,XXX, very straight, excelent bed, brand new stock exhaust from mani back. Needs carb work. Very minor rust. MACO respray and I could make some money. The DD 96 Saturn SC2 has 112,750, I put on all but 35K on it since 98. Mighty fine car. Bonzi Lon

How long did your Body Shop take
Thanks Steve, it was a huge improvement. It was intended all along to have the before and after shots in the same place, IF I EVER got it done. First was a film camera then had to swich to digital. That blue paint is so close to 115 Metalic Blue it is scary. Painter Ray used his eye and a tool box under lid and came up with "1991 Mitsubishi 'import only' Fiji Blue Metalic" tweeked with more metalic and added some pearl. The under hood and bay were not done, except battery box area, to show the original paint. The only difference is the shine. When he handed me the can of extra paint, it was marked "Bonzi Blue Metalic Pearl", along with the code. Bonzi Lon

How long did your Body Shop take
From stripping of paint to delivery of freshly painted body was 27 years 2 months 11 days. :disappoin First body guy got every thing up to jamming, 1 1/2 months, then quit. :tapemouth Very mad, out of money and lack of interest it went into storage. For 26 years. It took a year to talk Painter Ray into finishing it. In the agreement I was allowed to work and observe the entire prosess. He was very impressed with the previous work as he had 2 hours charged to body prep, the rest was paint. From pick up to delivery was 26 days. I took it apart in 1980, so it was up to me to put it back together and running. Did all that in 6 months. (with lots of information on this site, thanks) This is the roll out of the 26 year sleep and after Painter Ray did his thing. Bonzi Lon

heater control panel
I need one for #110, but will let all the others battle over it. I won't be following the auction, for fear of temptation, but wouldn't mind knowing the final price for a guideline in the future. Bonzi Lon

engine dies when i pull out dipstick
From all the Datsun dip sticks I have, they appear to be hot molded rubber, probably around barbs on the shaft to keep it in place. Never cut one open. There will be a certin distance between the end of the stick and the top seal of the dip stick plug. If the rubber plug is defective, either by air leakage or not firmly attached to the metal stick, I would replace. Bonzi Lon

Questions/Comments on #1905 Parts
Just checked the door panels in HLS30-00110, sure enough two screws with gromets, except each one is located far forward and far aft in the corners. No evidence of any ever being in the center, like the blue one. Bonzi Lon

Interior overspray.
Same problem here, quarter century of overspray and grime, on off-white no less. Laquer thinner was the only product that cut it quick and easy. I found using small squares of cloth to take off most of the grime, then follow with a clean cloth and thinner to remove the residue worked best. Plenty of safety precautions and ventilation. Some before, after and compare. Bonzi Lon

Its finally painted!!!!!
Of course I like it, its blue. I'm with Enigma on this, I don't think dark blue/butterscotch is the 'best' combo. Black is always the stand-in, but you might consider, if doing the entire interior, the off white they offered or a custom egg shell to darker grey (Enigma) in that shade range. You should get large samples and see what YOU like. Bonzi Lon

Yet Another Z In My Posession Now...This Is Getting Out Of Control!
This hitch was installed at the time of purchase, 1977. It did haul an enclosed U-Haul 750 miles back from college too. Now that was a driving experience. If you need measurements I can get them for you, don't really want to sell it. IIRC it has a tounge wt. of 500 lbs, chrome plated, has a mfgs name. As you can see it has a bracket of the same dimentions that bolts through the spare tire well, and a bracket to the bumper. Upon refurbishment, it was intended to be put it back on. Polished everything up, spent some time on it, go to install it and was injured like 4 times in attempting to get it to bolt up. After that last mashed ring finger, I figured out this car did not want to wear a "trailer hitch". Bonzi Lon

Whats your Z plan for 2010?
For safety, the fuel tank needs to come out and all the old braded lines to the evaporation tank either replaced or removed to the minimum, getting raw fuel smell after fueling. Have one hose plugged and one seeping. It will be a good time to see how my fuel tank lining with "KREEM" held up after 2 years of fuel, there are some nay-sayers. We will see. It did cure for 2 years before fuel. Another issue is the exhaust system, for cost reasons it will be tweeked so it tucks up under a little better, maybe the muffler will fit better, extend the tip further. It now has a steel (rust) 6-2-1 header, when installed, the entire collector sits about 1 1/2 inches lower than it should compared to the rest of the underside of the car, the rest back is even worse. Tweek first, replace later. Then there is always more... Bonzi Lon

Replicating Rare NGK Decal ? Group Buy Idea
Or maybe transplant this 'idea' to them that 'they' need to replicate this sticker for an historic advertising campaign to produce world wide for free to the public. Anyone remember the STP sticker campaign? Bonzi Lon

A new old guy
I am so happy to hear of someone, other than myself, that loves the original steel wheels and covers. Either style, 'D' or 'Z'. I have been to 3 Z events so far and its the only car with them on, most comments are to the good. The young ones have never seen them before. First thing my ex-sister-in-law said when she saw the car was, "you need to get some wheels". :stupid: Bonzi Lon

Who has owned their Z the longest?
The 240Z was in Kansas in May of 1970. The son of a Dr. was given an Orange one for his HS Senior graduation. IIRC, he had gotten it in KC. One sharp little car. It was the talk of High School. He drove the h*** out of it. I was a 14yo gas pump attendant and witnessed him smoking the tires up across the parking lot, at the station owner's egging on, 'that J** car can't do squat'. I was impressed. First import / foriegn car i ever saw do that. The first 240Z I saw for sale, I bought it. 6-21-77. Bonzi Lon

What is the hardest to find early Z car part?
One of the few things #110 has broken is the heater control panel. The PO had to cut the lower rail off to get the AM/FM 8 track to fit. Bonzi Lon

Resurrection
On stubborn cotter pins I have used either a piece of wire or string through the loop to pull it out, like a tooth, with the knuckles being srcaped, every time. IIRC on mine I used one jaw of needle nose plyers and levered it out. Getting it back in was another story, but got it done, somehow. Bonzi Lon

My dash cracked!!!
Wow!!! That is quite the dash treatment. I imagine the work involved is extensive, however not my 'cup-o-tea' for this car. I could see another car done like that with the rest of the interior done with the same treatment. It would be interesting to know what it would cost if done though. What did your friend have to pay for it? I think all of us would like to have an idea, even though some would have to save for quite some time to afford it. Bonzi Lon

Removing tape from 1yr old paint and stuff
You might try alcohol, rubbing alcohol first then grain alcohol, or if that doesn't work something stonger like laquer thinner, but be careful on the amount of time it is on or the pressure used. On my mounting holes after painting I used jewlers broaches to open them up, it is like a tapered reamer, a small drill bit could cause chipping, be careful if you use it. The posts should have steel barrel clips on them to help hold them on. I also used a small dab silicone glue on each one just to be safe. Remove the inner pannel and look in there for signs of the holes on the deck lid. Bonzi Lon
