Early Datsun 5 speeds: need Z g/box guru
thanks zed. I am in nsw, but very close to VIC, so would be operating in VIC. The more contacts I have re HRC, the better. So I will PM you. Re your advice........again, you are spot on. Clearly I am getting carried away, but I wanted to get right to the bottom of the issue. I have several 5 spds sitting around ready to go, but really wanted to unearth all the info. Re: g72s20 Spot on, amazing what some people know and are willing to share. It would take me 10 years to get all the info if not for persons like these.

Early Datsun 5 speeds: need Z g/box guru
Finally, can someone definetly confirm that the FS5C71A in the Datsun 2000 sports is the same as the FS5C71A in the 240Z exported to Australia? Surely they are? Different bellhousing but same box? According to a gear chart I found they are. If they are the same, may make it easier to find one as quite a few Zs in AUS but not many 2000 sports. Also, have heard on another thread (referenced earlier in this thread) that were a a close and ultra close ratio sets available. Can someone confirm? Thirsty for more knowledge now!

Early Datsun 5 speeds: need Z g/box guru
Thanks alot. What a great site, so much knowledge. In reply to zedrally: I am not particularly serious about doing well for a few years, but i want to build the car right the first time so I can keep stepping up, and not incur the warath of the scruiteneers, and be well within the spirit of the catogory, which I think will grow to be something momentous in this country. So, I have to find a Roadster gearbox, steel syncro, and rebuild her. No worries. I have heard it is a sweet box when done up properly. No, not considering PRC at this stage. Step it up from the borttom, less HP, less cost to build, and I already have most of the gear I need for HRC. A competitive PRC 1600 is a little out of my budget at this stage. Plus my driving needs a lot of developmment first. Ok down to business: WHO HAS A FS5C17A THEY CAN SELL ME???!!!

Early Datsun 5 speeds: need Z g/box guru
zedrally is onto me. He sees my plan! A question though: HRC recognises model "run on" (ie starts from the first year of release) but, as 1600's started here (AUS) 1968, how will it be possible to recognise my car or any 1600 as pre 1968? So, I thought id have to run hrc2, post historic, 1972-76 or whatever it is. The CAMS manual confuses me, I go to a HRC event and see all kinds of variations on what is suposedly permisable. Can you explain?

240Z gearbox question
Hello there. I am wanting to know about the gearbox known as the FS5C71A. I know it was introduced in the Roadster 2000, in about 1967. It known to have a 3 piece case with a stright stick. It had a variant, same numbers except the C was a W (FS5W71A) which had the weaker warner style brass syncros (instead of servo style steel syncros). I thought this box would be rare, but I believe it was original equipment on the 1969-1971 240Z as well? This is where I need confirmation from a "Z head" as you like to refer to yourselves!!! Is it true? I also heard that the 1972-1976 240Z had the next evolution, the FS5C71B which differed in that it had a 2 piece case and a bent stick. Had almost identical ratios, slightly different. Can someone confirm? Note that I might be out by a year in any or all of my release dates as I am in AUS not US. Why I ask? I am wanting a period (produced in the same years) datsun 5spd gearbox to run in my race Datsun 1600 (P510 in the US). The model run for these cars in AUS was 1968-1972, so basically I need the strongest Datsun 5spd from this 68-72 period I can get. It either going to be the A or the B box, depending on what you guys say on the 2 boxes (and wether the B box was released before the end of 72 or not). Is A better than B? Do I have my details correct? Are both boxes hard to find? Is either one easier to rebuild/strenghten? Cost? Note that I cant run latter model boxes, ie Option 1 box, its against the regulations. Or I'd run my Opt 1 and be done with it!! Hope someone can help. Thanks.
