Depends on who you are... If you're young and still studly, the sex comes easy and free... still have to fork over the bucks for the Z. If you're more "mature"and established, Z's are relatively affordable; but the rust-free pink (without fender flares) is a bit more precious! Just passed the big 4-0, so I'm firmly planted somewhere in the middle!

You say you want "basically stock", BUT: The following is not stock: "at least 250HP, great wheels, and might be slightly lowered. I would probably put modern brakes on it too. I would probably put more modern seats and seatbelts in too." What's more important? Stock or modified? If you're going to modify it, go for a 76 to 78 280Z. Their cheaper, easier to find, and you're not messing with a true "classic" 240. (They're also fuel injected, so not quite as finicky as carburated 240's and 260's). They're heavier, so not as nimble. If you want stock, go for a 240, and keep it stock. Modifying as you explained will cost you some bucks... the car PLUS however far you want to take it (plan on about $3,000 minimum in mods you've identified) Then again, if you're going stock, and the car is far from perfect, you could be looking at the same upgrade cost AFTER purchase. Performance per dollar (US) it's as good or better than anything else out there. What's wrong with the styling? Last time I checked my calendar, it said 2003. Look at everything else on the road. Considering the value, I'd take it in a heartbeat over any other car with no (or useless) backseats. Mustang, Firebird/Camaro, Thunderbird, Miata, Honda S2000, Vette, etc, etc.

Has anyone had experience with the MSA or Vic Brit carpet kits? I'm interested in the deluxe type, for 2 reasons: sound deadening and thermal insulation. Worth the extra cabbage?

Works fantastic. Turned my yellowing-original white/cream to a brand new black. I was impressed, my friends were stunned. There are others on the market that also work well, but S E M is primo.

Fender flares are available through Classic Datsun Motorsports (www.classicdatsun.com). MSA offers the same, but Les from Classic is the supplier to MSA; therefore cheaper through him. The fender mount mirrors (chrome)are now available through MSA, but they are not the same quality as original. Les at Classic does have a high quality set, but for more $. Also, Courtesy Nissan (www.courtesyparts.com) has a set of flat black mirrors ($180.00/set). I bought the flares from Les, and the mirrors from MSA. Like you, I want the Fairlady look. Someone posted a pic from the MSA show last week, and coined the phrase "Fairlady Poser". I hate the fact that the shoe fits. It doesn't bother me to "botch" up my '77, because it's a 77. Don't know if yours is a 240, but if it is, and it's sweet, make sure you want to do it, before you do it. my opinion.
