I suggest you post some photos. Makes it easier to make a guesstament based on visual information.
  2. I have hand cleaned the engine compartment on both my Z's. It is time consuming, but it does let you spot areas/items that need attention (as mentioned above). Once done it is pretty much a wipe down when doing oil/filter changes to keep it looking good, especially if you apply a wax to it.

Well, I need to know if anyone has experienced this and how it was repaired - I went to open the rear hatch one day recently and the right side "sagged" and scraped a bit on the roof. I took it apart today and discovered the "tab" on the hatch is flexing where the welds hold it to the hatch. It has not broken the welds completely loose, but it certainly needs to be repaired. Any one out there see this and how was it repaired? Is it fairly straight forward for a body shop to repair? Thanks in advance.
  4. Want to thank Arne for adding my pin at the exact location requested in Rio Rancho, NM - I am located within 100 yards of that pin.

One thing to check is that the air filter clears the air horns. Mine has a K&N filter and it just clears the air horns.
  6. Did a little more searching tonight and according to the following site there is a manufacturer limited 7 year/70,000 mile warranty - http://autoparts.cardomain.com/auto-part/39068-nissan-240z-cvu-cvu8230-steering-rack#fits Total cost w/core and shipping - $156.43 I have not been able to find specific info on CVU, the manufacturer. New from Nissan would be nice, but at the listed price - sorry - I have a lot more parts to buy and my budget isn't open ended.
  7. I am working on one of my '71 240's and want to replace the steering rack with a rebuilt unit. I have searched the posts for recommended vendors and found a reference to MSA from 2007, but they appear not to have them, at least not on their web pages. I found this on the web: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/shop_parts/steering_rack/nissan/240z.html Anyone have any input or other suggestions? Thank you in advance. -Bill-
  8. I dug out my "How to Modify Datsun 510 610 240Z Engines and Chassis" book that I had the original F.A.R. decals in. You are lucky in that I had an odd number of them and will mail you one.:cheeky:

"He said he still has the oil pump installed" Carl, I missed that - and I read it a couple times before I replied and looked like an idiot : -) I stand corrected.

Do you still have the crank pulley on? If so, just turn it 'til the #1 cylinder is up and the 0 degree marker (the large "v" notch) on the crank pulley is lined up with the pointer.
  11. Stock radiator with the 4 speed was a 2 row. Not sure if the automatics had a 3 row or not. Here in the S.W. a 3 row is nice, especially running around town.
  12. I dealt with F.A.R. Performance back in the summer of 1973. I first met Dolf and his racing team at a SCCA race in Portland, OR. Walt Maas drove number 45 240Z for them (backcover of the above mentioned book). I arranged to take HLS30-30855 to F.A.R. to have them install a performance camshaft, recurve the distributer and install SM needles (the FAR Performance tune-up kit is the distributor work, SM needles, and solid-core spark plug wires). They did superb work. That was part of the first things I checked when HLS30-30855 returned to me this fall - check to see if those goodies were still there. The cam is a DeLong 298-09. You might pull the valve cover, take a mirror and hold a the rear of the cam to see if it is stock or maybe they installed a different one, as well the tuning. You can rest assured the work performed by F.A.R. was top notch. I even still have some of their decals.
  13. Arne - do you have the How to Modify 510/240Z book (not exact title) - there is a photo in the section on transmissions. I put one in 30855 back in '71 (from Datsun Competition). Unfortunately, sometime over the years, it was replaced with one from a 280ZX by the folks I had sold her to. That was one of the first things I looked at when she arrived "home" this past August. I suppose something went awry and they just swapped rather than trying to find parts to repair. I had it geared like the 2000 roadster.
  14. 30855 is a May of 1971 Z also.
  15. Based on your VIN - HLS30-28499 - it is a 1971, and most likely production month of 4/71 or 5/71. I have HLS30-30855 with production month of 5/71

I'll third it - I used headbolts with spacers when I rebuilt mine this past winter. Worked great.
