Painting it 901
Good color - my my 2/71 originally was 901 (original owner had a repaint done to a light gold) and am thinking of returning to the original 901. 5/71 is 901 and will be headed to the paint people hopefully in a month. Not sure of their schedule. Look forward to seeing the photos of the work you do and the paint shop.

New Guy! RHD 79 Fairlady Z!
VERY nice! That is a heck of a car to have. Lots of life left and many km's of enjoyment to come. (31 years old and only 39035 miles (62821km) - pretty sheltered life :-) )

Parts marking question (warning, large ugly photos)
In the work I have been doing in refreshing 30855 I have found the yellow paint in many locations front and rear. I have also tried to preserve what is there by being careful with the cleaning. My guess was that it was original marking of the various parts having been torqued (I had read someplace before that they nuts/bolts were marked).

Interpart Suspension Upgrade Kit Help Please
I cannot state what excessive camber would be. Maybe I should have stated the offset bushings allow for adjusting the camber, which when a Z is lowered can be too much negative camber (or more than one would desire). If I recall correctly FAR Performance set mine at 3/4 degree negative on the rear (this was done in 1973).

Interpart Suspension Upgrade Kit Help Please
You are correct in that the hex end goes toward the rear. I have these on hls30-30855, as well as the rear ones as she is lowered. This helps correct the excessive camber when lowered.

How do you modify your S30?
On HLS30-30855 I am trying to stay period correct with everything I had modified back in the early 70's. The only thing I won't be able to is the 5 spd that I put in from Datsun Comp. (unless I can find one) It was replaced sometime after my 1st ownership period with a '79 5 speed. Of course the rubber bushings on the sway bars will be replaced with urethane. But so far I have been able to use the correct parts I have had to replace. There are some things I'd like to do, like the headlight wiring kits and alternator upgrade just to prevent electrical issues. So...I guess you could say period correct where ever possible and more recent on less noticeable.

How do you brake in a new clutch?
A tip I got from an experienced racer way back when - "brakes are cheaper and easier to replace than clutches and transmissions."
-
Wink Mirrors
I had one in my 620 Pickup and my 610 coupe. I liked them as they pretty well eliminated blind spots. Never put one in my Z so no input there.

4:11 vs 3:90 diff which one better on street n freeway?
In my 5/71 Z I installed the early 5 speed and 4.44 lsd from Datsun Comp. I used the same gearing in the transmission as the 2000 roadster. I really enjoyed it on the open road, twisty roads, and in town. I look forward to getting her back on the road to once again enjoy it. Of course, due to a tranny change while it was out of my possession, (it had a 79 280Z tranny put in) I am looking for the 81 to 83 tranny.

Whats your Z plan for 2010?
5/71 - Since last year I got the front half of the underside cleaned, the front suspension all cleaned and rebuilt, new bearings, new rotors, pads, brake hoses, I hope to have the rear half completed this year. Already have the rear suspension and differential out already. Replaced the rear bearings already. Have the new u-joints ready to install. A lot of cleaning of the underside to do. Actually, I hope to get real serious at getting all of my part done in the refresh then get her off to the body shop for their part as I would love to drive her this year. 2/71 - New upholstery, door sills, and maybe a repaint.

Craig's List Z
My 2/71 has vertical defrost lines. My 5/71 has the horizontal lines

BRE Yellow Spring Rates
I purchased the springs new in '72 and installed them. I am using period correct inserts - Interpart Muhlhollands - purchased new this past year. I could have gone to newer style of inserts, but I did not want to replace the springs also - I read some posts that the newer inserts do not allow one to use the old style springs that lower the car as much as they do.

BRE Yellow Spring Rates
HLS30-30855 has the BRE springs - grey - front and blue - rear I don't know the spring rate though. I do have a question though - I cannot find my original installation instructions, but memory seems to recall the bump stops had to be trimmed shorter. Does anyone have information as to how much was cut off? I am replacing the bump stops (pretty well crumbled away over the years) with ones from MSA.

Best Z Barn Find
For me the greatest barn find is hls30-30855 - see link for post titled "Finding an old Friend - - or it's a small world.." by Carl Beck - http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31481&highlight=finding+friend I am still doing the refresh - would like to finish by this summers national meet.

Stuck Head Bolts!! @#$%@#$%*
It appears I failed to post what I ended up doing to get the head loose from the block and the remains of the one bolt. I talked to the manager at Rio Rancho Import Auto Repair and he suggested stuffing small diameter rope into cylinders 1 and 6 then turn the crank by hand to use the force of the pistons to push the head off. It took a bit, but it did work. I then used a left handed drill bit to remove the rest of the bolt.

Greetings, from me and my Z
I have the P/S wheels on HLS30-30855, dealer installed in Spokane. One difference is that the center caps are held on with 4 screws. I have a lot of elbow grease coming up to get them looking as good as yours.

Body progress
I have to applaud you for taking on the body work. Looks like you may have done this kinda work before. Me, I have to leave that to others and am getting close to turning her over to someone for that part - as soon as I finish everything else needed for the refresh on HLS30-30855. Are you going to be doing the paint yourself? Such satisfaction there is in doing things yourself for your Z. Look forward to seeing it sometime.

Rear Camber adjustment
I recommend it just so you can maintain the proper camber adjustment. I put them on my 71Z (HLS30-30855) back in the early 70's when I lowered it with the BRE springs.

Which CB radio do you carry?
I started using a CB in '75 and started with a small Cobra in the Z. I have had one every since in my pickups. It has saved me many times from getting caught in a mess of traffic due to accidents, getting stuck on a mountain pass because it was closed temporarily, etc. I used to travel back and forth from Sisters to Portland and in the winter it helped a lot over Santiam Pass or Mt Hood. No cell phone coverage in many areas. The truckers are still willing to share information related to highway and traffic conditions - which is pretty current compared to what you can get by dialing the 3 digit number for a states line for conditions. With the advancement in FRS radios (range), I'll use that when travelling in the Z. So, in my opinion, it does not matter how many travelers use them (truckers, RVers, and regular folks), they are useful. Each individual can use what fits their needs the best (cell phone, CB, FRS, smoke signals, hand signals, etc)

Period Correct Louvers!
"They just press into the holes in the louver." - SBlake01 - That explains the notch in each louver at the location yours has the "button". Thank you Arne and Pleiner87 for your replies also. I too would not drill holes in the rear hatch, that is why I went with the Chastains way back when (non-hinged version) on my 5/71 Z. Over the years under the ownership of the people I sold it to in '84 the slats disappeared. I was very happy with finally getting another set - even if they are the "newer" version. If anyone finds just the slats and no mounting hardware for the non-hinged version - please let me know as I have the hardware still on the rear window for them and would like to have the louvers.
