I have a 1983 280zx gear box in my 71 240Z. The only necessary modification was for the shifter. I had to elongate the hole in the floor for the shifter. The speedo pinion has to be changed over to the original housing. The 1983 5spd is the best bet because the mainshaft nut has left hand threads and won't back off causing the trans to jump out of gear. You shouldn't have any problem installing it into a 510.
