Dreco's Lap Footage at MSR
Yeah, I was sure we would need some mud tires to make it out! anyway, it'll go quicker at the shop if you just bring the header, but we can sure pull it off at my place, either way is fine with me. If you pull it apart, see if you can fit the entire exhaust in your truck and I'll pretty up the welds on the muffler too, I bought a new grinder to replace my very old 4" that quit on me the day I did your exhaust. I'm off tomorrow, just call the house and we'll set it up

Dreco's Lap Footage at MSR
I'll make a couple comments, since I'm Dave's friend who built the exhaust and also the transmission for his car, pictures and video don't do the car justice, it is one of the cleanest S30's I have ever seen, even the undercarriage is super straight and very very clean, The 3" exhaust is likely overkill for his set up, but I bet he doesn't have a problem hearing his engine over other cars on the track now, as it is extremely loud! But it sounds great, kind of a cross between a cammed up SBC at idle and a multicam V-8 at higher RPM, very aggressive. It sure revs nice and fast too. Make no mistake, the car is fast, but Dave can sure drive the wheels off of it too! Bummer about the cracked collector, I should pulled the header off to fabricate and weld the new 3" collector, instead of laying on my back spraying welding slag all over myself! :paranoid: Bring her back to the shop anytime and I'll redo the collector. Those videos are making me want to strip that '78 I have "resting" in a corner of the shop and slap my triples and my spare E-88 on the L-28 and go to MSR! I wonder just how light I could make a '78 chassis? Or maybe I should finish my street car first...

Top Car Movies
ever seen "King of the Mountain"? it's all about cars, a little cheezy, about street racers on Mulhuland (sp?) drive in California, the hero drives a Porsche Speedster the movie has loads of cool cars, and there's even an S30-Z in it briefly, I haven't seen it in years though

Bell Housing for a 83 280z turbo stick
No problem Gary, surely someone knows everything there is to know about old Z's, but not me! :classic: I just happened to know this as I've been messing with the turbo stuff for several years!

Bell Housing for a 83 280z turbo stick
The bolt pattern in the bellhousing is the same for all L series motors, including 4 cylinders, but the bellhousing itself is entirely different, the FS5 "B" nissan 5 speed (N/A Z and ZX up to 1983) has the bell housing cast integrally with the front half of the case, the Borg Warner T-5 used in the '82 and '83 280ZX turbo, has a removable bellhousing, that is to say you cannot use the bell off of a non turbo "B" nissan trans on a ZXT T-5, you could however, use the entire N/A trans behind an L28ET, you would have to have the N/A trans x-member and driveshaft also. At any rate, I happen to have the 280ZXT, T-5 bellhousing laying around from an old project... you could also use the 82-83 T-5 behind an N/A L-series, although I don't know why you'd want to I'm just finishing up rebuilding the second of 2 "B" boxes for a member here, and interestingly enough, the main shaft nut on the later model B's has reverse threads, I'd imagine to keep the mainshaft nut from backing off, as normal threads could loosen as they are the same "rotation" as the engine, all that holds the nut on is a groove on the main shaft with a peen... I've also got a late model FS "C" box from a 240sx that I'm eventually going to install in my 370+ WHP turbo 240z, and the front countershaft bearing is much larger than the "b" trans, which is the very bearing that failed in one of the boxes I just rebuilt, as well as a spare I built for my own car. Cheers!

L28 horsepower?
My L-28 makes 372 horsepower and 365 Ft. Lbs. of torque at the wheels on a 248 dynojet, the long block is nothing fancy, J+E pistons and a small schnieder cam, but a pretty good sized turbo, full T-04S, 60-1 compressor and a .58 P-trim hotside, I'm currently building another motor with loads more tricks to it, maybe 450 to the ground... I'll soon find out. It's not what I would term "cheap' to make this kind of power with an L, I have loads of money in all the "bolt-on" stuff, Spearco intercooler, 550cc injectors, wastegate, fuel system, Haltech stand alone EFI, it all adds up in a big hurry, even if you use a junkyard motor, the other components required to make big power numbers cost. IMO, the money is worth it, nothing feels quite like a high powered L turbo spooling up and mashing you back in your seat. jmortensen mentioned hybridz.org, take a peek over there, the most powerful L motor's on the 'net for sure, more than one of them making 450+ wheel horsepower, street driven.

clutch problems, help with diagnosis
Dreco, we met at the ZCON this year, I have the smurf blue turbo 240z, I've rebuilt a couple B boxes like yours, and have my 35'x30' shop nearly completed, I also have an MSA short shifter for a B trans that I'd sell, I'm going to go with an SX trans, as my car has blown up 4 early transmissions over the last few years, if you'd like bring it by and we'll crack it open and see what's what, I live on the NW side of FTW, near 820 and 20 Chris, 817-448-9265

Whats your most outragous kill story?
I actually don't like the whole "kill story street racer deal" maybe it makes me think to much about what all can go wrong on the street, but it's late and I'm bored so... probably the "kill" I remember most was against a 98 Ram Air Firebird with intake/cam/headers/exhaust, belonged to an older gentleman at work, he had heard some friends talking about my car (I had just finished the current T-4 set up) and he approached me talking about a race, long story short, he lost, 3 runs, 2 from a dig and one from a 30 roll, I was actually pretty nervous, as I could just see myself going to jail, plus his car sounded MEAN, he was ribbed pretty mercilessly at work and sold the car shortly after... I also had a very good race once with a Mustang Cobra, late 90's model, looking back it was an extremely stupid thing to do, was on a fairly busy street in Houston (although it was pretty late at night) we raced from a light and I had put about 2 car lengths on him by 120mph, like I said, insanely stupid. the guy driving flagged me down after the race because "I've just got to see what you've done to that old Z car." even better kill story was at HRP (drag strip) I ran a late model corvette, I had huge traction troubles until the top of third gear, so the Vette killed me off the line, when the tires quit spinning I passed him at about the 1000' mark, I have it on video, a friend was filming in the stands, and you can hear the crowd kind of go "whoa" when my car finally hooks, and I go scooting by him, it's pretty funny

coil over source/type?
Ground Control, sectioned struts with Illumina inserts, 8" 250 LBS/inch eibach springs, camber plates, all from ground control.. not difficult to install, and the company was great to work with. performance is what I expected, much firmer than stock, but not overly harsh, worth the bucks. at the 2006 ZCON my car ran an 80.036 in the auto-x, probably in the top 1/5 of all the cars, although I never saw all the results, but was quicker than all my buddies, with no sway bars on 225x16 KDW street tires.
