I think I will go with the 280zx Dist. idea. Do I need a MSD Ignition with it or should I just go with the distributor and the stock modual? Thanks for the help! I am trying to get it together for the Z Fest but I might have to wait till next year.

Finishing with the engine rebuild and I am looking for opinons for the distributor. I am looking at the Crane XR 3000 Electronic Ignition System and their PS-40 High Performance Coil. Has anyone had any expereince with it? Or should I just get an old Distributor out of a late model and swap with the modual. The system now has a Jacobs electronic points box. I have a liitle paperwork on it but would rather dump the points system.
  4. Thanks Mark I will go with that, I already have the ARP Lube.
  5. I have tore down the engine and head and found ARP Bolts on the head and mains. I have used ARP in the past on V-8 rebuilds and know the tork specs are different from stock on those. Does anyone know what I should tighten down the head bolts to? Stock or different? I know ARP bolts have a different stretch rating so I assume so. I have emailed ARP but no help yet. I hope to have her ready for the Zfest but time is not on my side. I am also trying to identify the clutch in it. No markings but it has a gold housing. It has very little wear on it so I am reusing it. I am rebuilding the engine becuase of low compression on 1 & 3. The cam shows very little wear also, I am assuming that it sat for some time and calapst a ring. I have pics if anyone is interested or can help.
  6. You da man! Thanks for the info on the cam, I just want to make sure that I can give all the info available to the head shop. I hope I have it toghter in time to make the Zfest. I registered on the your site today. I got some work ahead but am dying to get back in it and drive. I was reading about the weight thing in a Hoffman book I have, I have a freind of mine that owns a local machine shop and is going to help me do it in his shop. He will probably do most of it but I want to do as much as I can. I will make sure the balancing happens.
  7. The car will done by then.
  8. I posted a looking for opinion thread a few days ago for input on engine rebuild or swap, this is a addon to that in sorts. I have decided to rebuild the L24 engine in it. I was going to beef it up some but I am trying to id what has been done to the engine before I got it. Here is what I can find as of Number or markings so far, I don't know it was all stock but I can't seem to track down anything. I hope this is not too long.. Here goes. Block is origal numbers matching on my 71. Head is E88, has been ported Cam has Numbers on it as follows. Front end of cam has - 270.80F MR 5325 Front shaft between lobes has - EPA0 Mid back on shaft has - H12 Back on shaft has C1 Intake Manifold has E-46 stamped on it. Original SU's I think stock Stock Distributor with Jacobs Electronics box added. I need advice and help to know what I have and its potential. And input on performance ideas. Thanks for any help. Rebuild starts soon!

Thanks for the responses, I will for sure run with the original engine idea. It was rebuilt in 96 by a local performance shop but I am unsure of any internal compenent specs. It does have a header already, when I pulled the heads it was obviuos that it was ported already also. I found some markings on the cam but do not know if was stock, The seller beleived it was slightly modified but did not know any specifics. He had only had it for a year from the original owner. I have pics of the tear down as I am doing it if anyone is interested. I will start planing the rebuild. A freind of mine is a ASE tech with his own shop which I helped him open so room and cheap labor will be a plus! Thanks the links to parts suppliers, I will need them. Thanks guys!

I picked up this z a month ago and drove it a few weeks. Seemed to be a little weak so I decided to tear into a bit. It had an exhast leak at the head so I started there. Before taking the head off I got some low compression readings from 1 & 3. After taking the head off and putting some oil in the cylinders 1 & 3 leaked through. Now for the opions, I have access to a 305 chevy, should I rebuild the original engine again or put the money into a v8 swap. I am leaning to rebuilding the original to maintain classic z appeal. A freind of mine has the 305 and thinks it would be cheaper to do the swap. I would store the original engine if we do the swap. If I rebuild the original I would like to beef it up and would need help with parts to do it and vendors. Any input would be appreciated. Jim

Just getting into my 71 z and there is a box on the firewall that is made by Jacobs. It says electronic ignition, but when I pull the distributor cab there are points. I can unplag it and it wont start so I know it is doing something but what? I hope this is not a stupid question but I have never seen it before. Thanks for any help folks!

I am not too new to the site but I have never introduced myself. I have just picked up a 71 240z in pretty good shape. I also have a 90 300zx NA. I have had the 300 for 8 years, the 240z I have loved since my first ride with my uncle in his 72 when I was 8! I have a few questions about my z but I will start a few new threads to address them. Other rides I have owned are 83 280zx turbo, 91 240sx I still have but am getting rid of.Look forward to hearing from any z fans!
