Yes the photo of the lash pads is a msa photo, was just using it as an example. If there is something that i can use to un gum the sticky valves please let me know, these would really make it easier then pulling the head and doing a valve job.

Hello z forum, I need help with my 77 280z stock engine. A little history, I bought this car in a none running condition, when me and my dad pick this car up it was pretty much growing shrubs out the door sill. We trailered it home and I've been working on it since. What Ive done so far is drained the fuel, replaced the fuel pump & filter(because when I finally got it started it ran for about 2mins and shut of and would not start back up unless I pulled the hose on top of the fuel filter to release the pressure build up,then runs for another 2mins. this was because the fuel pump was clogged badly from old sitting fuel. That problem was fixed, now stays running but rough) Next I pulled the valve cover off (because i heard loud machanical noise) and found that four lash pads were out, so I put them back where they go and adjusted the valve clearance on all valves, adjusted the mechanical timing at 10 degrees, put the valve cover back and and started it up. It idled ok but is rough on acceleration. I rev'd it a few times and found that black and white smoke was coming form the exhaust. I did a compression test and found that #2 cylinder(second from the radiator) was getting low to almost no compression. I researched the problem and found that I should replace the valve seals( I only replaced the intake valve seal because it was the one that appeared to be worn) replaced the cover and still a great amount of smoke is put out. My question is what else should I do to to get good compression out of this cylinder? What all does low compression indicate? sorry for writing a book but I wanted to be thorough. thanx...

Ok z fourm, I figured one problem. Today I pulled the rocker cover and found that four of the lash pads had fell out which was causing first the loud ticking and second the arms to move from side to side, I put evrything back as it should be and cranked it up. It took a bit to get it started (which I will talk about in a sec) and it ran a lot smoother. (it only runs for about 2 mins and dies, when I go back to start it it just turns over) Ok the problem, when pushing on the accelerator rod it does not rev right up, also I pulled the fuel hose again (from the top of the fuel filter) and SPLASH, fuel came out but pressurized(more air pressure than fuel) so I figure that there is not enough fuel getting to the engine. Like I said before I was sitting for a while and I belive the tank is trashed, so I will be dropping the tank to get it cleaned and probaly will either get the fuel rail cleaned or get a new one. Will follow up. Thanx!

Well I just bought this car a few weeks ago, the owner did not know what was going on with it, and it sat up for a bit (it did not run when I bought it) and been trying to get it running since. The work that I've done to it so far was replace the fuel pump, because i did not know the condition of the one that was on there, I've checked that fuel was getting to the engine by pulling the fuel hose after the fuel filter(good).FOLLOW UP* I got the car where it starts for a min on crank, runs for a bit (very roughly) when i get it to rev by holding on the accelerator rod(it take a sec to get it to rev), i can here loud machanical ticking, I believe from the arms, and also backfire in the are intake area. HELP! HELP! HELP P.S. It doesnt stay running, it dies out after playing with it a bit, probaly after 2-3 mins

hello z fourm, i am posting because I need help in pointing me to the right direction in doing a valves & lifters job on my 77 280z. I need to do this because first off my z wont run, it cranks and bumbles a bit but will not stay running, so I pulled off the valve cover to find that i am able to move the arms from side to side by hand(this cant be right) so I figured i need to do a valve job. p.s. the reason i say its the valve work because i have previously owned a 76 and i had a burnt valve in it causing it to run off. The 77 is running the same but a lot worst(I had it running at one point of time for a whole min but it eventually died out)

hello z forum,I am a owner of a 77 280z. I have pretty much had it with the existing engine so I've decided to either rebuild it or buy a junker and rebuild it. Can anyone point me in the right direction into rebuilding the z engine. thx:cry::ogre:

Hello z owner and drivers, I have problem w/ my 1976 5 speed fuel injected z. Well I have a rough running problem, I thought that this problem would be fix by changing the distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, and plugs which I set the gapping of each plug at .35. Ive also tried by changing the AFM and distributor, This did not work. seems like I've tried everything that should fix this problem. What cause this problem in the first place is that I drove 30miles at 85-90mph on the freeway when I got off it was running rough. CAN ANYBODY HELP ME HELP!! :tapemouth :tapemouth

Ok I need some immediate help. I own a 76 280z 5 speed transmission, the transmission is making a lot of screeching noise, which I know it is die'n for some fluid. However I dont know who or what changed the tranny fluid before I had it but the fill plug on the side of the transmission is horribly stripped. Does any one have any ideas of getting this off.:tapemouth

I found the problem it was a faulty ignition timing. I adjusted it where it will start and run but there is smoke coming from under the manifold near the exust I think this is because the timing is not right on point the car still runs a bit uneven

Hi I have a 76 280z, I had problems with my previous engine where there was a crack in the cylinder head or maybe the block. Anyway I got a rebuild engine and installed it however it did not come with the flywheel and clutch so I pulled the flywheel off the previous engine and put it on the rebuilt along with a new clutch. Now everything is all together and tight, I try starting it and it struggles to start like the battery is low, but tis is a brand new battery, I checked the wires(pos. and neg.) to the starter and there good, it seens like its machanical not electrical. I even tried another battery and it did the same thing. The engine was running before I bought it, the only thing that I put on it was the flywheel and clutch P.S could I have tighten down te flywheel to hard :hurt: I need Help

I have had the same problem with both my 76 and 77 Z. I replaced the injectors and this made a major diffrence.
