I found #1678 with 2400 OHC Valve Cover
In my part of North Carolina there are many homes with many, many cars in various stages of decomposition. I tend to slow down to take a peek whenever I can in the hopes of seeing another Z car. None have been spotted as of yet. Still waiting for for photos of #1678.

Just bought a 79 280z
I too have a 79, and I do love it. You will find that it is so easy to work on (generally speaking), and is a treat to drive. I know that the earlier models have more chutzpa, and are generally thought of as a truer sports car, but the zx has its charms. I would love to know what the build date is. I would love to find my cars sibling. Welcome to the board, there is much to be learned, and wonderful people willing to share their knowledge.

Will 280ZX Wheels fit ?
As Arne stated, the stock size is: 195/70-14 So here is list from tirerack for you to peruse in that size. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1A.jsp?width=195%2F&ratio=70&diameter=14&skipOver=true&autoYear=1979&diameter=14&sortCode=34600&autoModel=280ZX&skipOver=true&ratio=70&autoMake=Datsun&minLoad=S&autoModClar=&minSpeedRating=S&width=195%2F&vehicleSearch=true&startIndex=0&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&speed_rating=S&speed_rating=T&speed_rating=U&speed_rating=H&speed_rating=V&speed_rating=Z&speed_rating=W&speed_rating=Y&speed_rating=(Y)&RunFlat=All

WTB lug nuts
Use the right size wrench and be careful with it. My lugs are in near pristine condition, and as far as I can tell they've been on the car since new. (no, they are not for sale) One might try lining the lug wrench with something like a thin felt. Might prevent scratching, but the felt would have to be kept clean, and the lugs would need to be cleaned before removing them (to keep the felt clean).

Will 280ZX Wheels fit ?
I think you will find that many people have had good experiences with Sumitomo HTR's (general performance and high performance available) or Yokohama Avids (H or V rated). I'm running Avid H4s, and enjoy the combination of ride quality and performance in all weather conditions. My set ran just shy of 400 bucks (including mounting). Really, you need to consider your climate and terrain, driving style, and intended use for the car when looking at tires.

Anyone going to the NAB convention this year?
http://www.nabshow.com http://www.nab.org Anyone going to the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas this year, or am I the only (future) broadcaster on the board? Last year I couldn't go due to monetary issues, but this year I was given the opportunity to intern with Sony-and they are paying all the bills (minus gambling money, of course). Anyway, I'll be in Vegas from the 11th to the 17th, should be a helluva good time. Hope to see some of you there-just drop by the Sony booth and ask for the oldest Western Carolina University intern...

help
The FSM (Factory Service Manual) for your year is available here: http://carfiche.com/manuals023/cars/ If it says TnA check back later. This will be of invaluable help with any issues you may have with your Z31.

Best Repair Manual
Actually, no. There are a few "use tool xyz" items, but for the most part that is not the case. When it is, readily available tools tend to do the same job as a "special" tool. I don't have a Chilton or Haynes manual, only my FSM and have not yet had any problem using it. Straightforward and to the point is how the book is written, and (I think this is the best part) it tells you what "it" is, and what specifically "it" is meant to do and why. You can download a PDF of your manual here: http://carfiche.com/manuals023/cars/ If it say TnA, just check back later.

Strange noise from engine compartment
I had a similar situation a couple years ago. For me, the noise was on and off for a bit, but progressed to a full time thing. Turned out to be bad idler pulleys. I too couldn't find the source of the noise and ended up taking the car to a Nissan dealer as the noise had passed bearable.

A ScuzzyZ Model?
Well yes, but where would the builder get the replacement panels? I doubt that MSA, Courtesy, or NissanParts.cc would have them...
-
A ScuzzyZ Model?
That's incredible. The attention to detail, the time to make the rust look just right... Someone has too much time on their hands, methinks.

Logo "Z" mats
How about a couple that just say Datsun? Slightly worse for wear, but still pretty nice considering...

paint code location
On the ZX (s130) it is a foil sticker on the radiator support, passenger side.

Beautiful Z found near by my home.
Bart, it's always nice to have another Z owner nearby. You never know when you might need a hand with something; having someone with knowledge nearby is a wonderful thing. Besides, the owner might have a few lines for parts that you don't know about.

I'm changing the color of my interior. Fun, fun, fun.
Been a bit delayed getting things done, but progress is being made. Alas, I have found rust...shouldn't be surprised of course, but it not something I was really looking forward to finding. This rust was caused by the undercoating trapping water, of course. It seems that this area was not welded, but was sealed with some sort of putty (for lack of a better word). The screwdriver went right through the metal in a few places, and this sealant just broke away. The affected area is no more than 3 inches wide by 2 inches. The dash is coming along, just waiting for the temp to get where the bumper stuff will be happy to do its thing.

Low Mileage 72 240Z on Ebay
Not digging into the car, it looks pretty sharp and it is in some great (if rather eclectic) company. Besides the passenger side mirror, carpet, and dash cap (all reversible) it looks pretty nice and straightforward -great paint, minimal body line deviance (driver side hood, but just a tiny little bit). If it is in as good of shape as they claim, that may not be a bad price, especially considering the location: pretty much dead center of the rust belt. Here's the link to the company website: http://www.stlouiscarmuseum.com

I wish I saw more Z's
I took the S130 to the dealership to inquire about getting a new handbrake cable. They asked for the VIN, which I recited from memory, and they told me I had it wrong. It was not nearly long enough. I explained the VIN situation, and had to eventually pull the car around so they could see it for themselves. Funny, sad, and very annoying. Only one technician from the bays knew what the car was... Brian (BRE-240z) and any other WNC Z owners, if you go to Anderson Nissan ask for the tech with the last name Anderson (no relation to the dealer). He knows his Z cars.
