dropped an L28 and 5 speed into my '96 infiniti....
My ZX has four doors, and has the most rare option out there-the "double hatch"! And, on the side tangent of the thread..."so I threw the rock at the life size hot wheels truck..."

no start no run
You state that you are getting fuel to the injectors, but at what pressure? I wonder if your fuel pump is working properly. If the car has been sitting that long, there is bound to be some crud built up throughout the entire system, including the little cone shaped filter in the pump. While you may be getting fuel to the injectors, there may not be enough umph behind them to work properly.

Thank you for the link, Alan. I figured that this book had been mentioned, but couldn't find word of it-the search function kept acting up.

New Book about Datsun / Nissan History
I was at Barnes & Noble today and came across this book. This book was published in 2005 by Motorbooks and was written by Pete Evanow. Our very own Carl Beck is listed as a source (along with zhome), and the book is chock full of great photos (though I have noticed a few questionable captions and photo edits). Still, I think it would make a nice addition to any collection, if for no other reason than to show publishers that Z related materials are still profitable. Here are the ISBN codes: ISBN-13: 978-0-7603-2181-2 ISBN-10: 0-7603-2181-7 I paid 34.95 for mine (cover price), but I would imagine that it could be purchased cheaper online-I was just happy to find it, and didn't want to wait... The title is "Z 35 years of Nissan's sports car"

280Z vs. 280ZX
In a word, no. The ZX has disc brakes all around, while the 280z had them only in front. The calipers are different, even though blackdragon doesn't illustrate this in their catalog. http://www.blackdragonauto.com/icatalog/z/0099.asp The calipers I have on my ZX (stock) are item #5, not #4 as they say (and you have on your Z). As for upgrading, I really can't help, other then to say search for "toyota 4x4 brake upgrade," as this is a common swap. FWIW

What's the longest trip you've made in your Z?
Well, mine is nowhere as extreme as Carl's or Bob's, BWTH. Spring '06, I drove from Cashiers (near Asheville) NC to Delray Beach, FL. That's about 800 miles one way, and about 15 hours driving, alone (well, I had my dog, but he can't drive or talk). Anyway, when I purchased my zx, the speedometer didn't work. Not really a big deal, but I went ahead and replaced the broken cable and was happy for a few weeks, until it broke again. Not having the time to wait for a replacement, I opted to go for the trip anyway. A few days before I was to depart, I noticed a whining sound coming from the engine bay, but I couldn't locate it (it manifested itself erratically, and at speed). Driving long distances without a speedometer isn't bad, you just keep up with traffic, or keep your tach within a certain range; but drowning out the screech of failing idler pulleys is not the easiest thing to do. Once I made it to Delray Beach, I felt it of utmost importance to get to a dealership for repair. The one I ended up going to provided me with a rapid assessment of the problem (both idlers), and told me that they would have the parts shipped OVERNIGHT. Apparently their definition of overnight-ing parts involves shipping the parts ground freight from California and South Carolina, and then claiming that it's normal for parts that are shipped "Overnight" to take up to 7 business days...(though mine only took 5 business days to be overnighted). I'm not trying to slam a business for the errors of their parts/service managers, especially since the Techs were great, but I recommend that you steer clear of Maroone off of I-95. Once I got the car back, everything was fine, and the return trip went smoothly. Moral of story? Take your time, and take some tools. Just be sure to have fun on the way.

Cars crushed in street racing crackdown
You are correct in your statement, however expropriation (through eminent domain) can be applied in different ways. from: http://www.answers.com/topic/expropriation?cat=biz-fin Regardless of the manner of the taking of private property, I feel that the g'ment did indeed go to far. As stated earlier, there are other ways to get the point across (serious jail time, auctioning of seized cars, loss of license, etc.), but I expect this was done mostly as a publicity stunt-and if that's the case, it worked (just look at us). California has always gone out of its way to push the limits of the law, or so it seems. When I lived there, I was charged a $300 Smog Impact Fee for bringing my out of state Buick with me, even though it passed all the smog tests with flying colors. Several years (and states) later, I received a refund check for that cash, plus interest, because the fee was ruled unconstitutional. That may seem a little off topic, but I would expect that California is just seeing how far it can go before they get taken to court. The intent may be honorable, but the ends do not always justify the means.

Undercoating and Manage Attachment option?
I would suggest peeling as much of the loose stuff off as you can, cleaning the bare areas (check for rust while you are at it-fix if needed), and apply an undercoating that you trust (I've no suggestions for what kind). Also, try to figure out what is causing the undercoating to come off. I had a hole develop in undercoating of one of my wheel wells (probably from a rock) and moisture was collecting in there, causing the coating to lose adhesion from the metal. By the time I discovered it, surface rust was already forming through the factory primer... Perhaps you have a similar cause, or perhaps this is an indication of a more serious problem. As to the problem uploading photos, I have the same problem.

Cars crushed in street racing crackdown
LMFAO!! Two words on this subject come to mind- Eminent Domain From Wikipedia But a few other thoughts come to mind. While street racing is obviously dangerous, it is nowhere near as dangerous as drunk driving. Here are some stats: http://www.madd.org/stats/0,1056,1112,00.html And some stats about Street Racing http://www.nhra.com/streetlegal/stats.html Now which is worse? Both are incredibly stupid to do, but one of them is much more likely to affect YOU at some time or another. Imagine what would happen if “they†were to confiscate and crush every car used for drunk driving.

280ZX Help!
Here are some shots from my troubleshooting section of the FSM. I would imagine there is a way to fool the fuel pump into staying on, though I might think it easier to check the fuel pressure with an applicable guage instead of hacking into your wires; though that's just an opinion.

What's wrong with the 280's?
Thanks for the kick in the shin, Mr Camouflage-good thing I can't see ya! (grumble, grumble, grumble...) :stupid: But if you are talking about power, you are correct-my beloved zx is indeed saddled down more than the earlier models by various emission controls (grumble, grumble, grumble...) But to get to your original question-there's nothing wrong with the 280's IMO. For that matter, I don't see anything wrong with any of them; they all have their strong points and weaknesses. The important thing is that you found a Z car, and that you are enjoying yourself.

280ZX Help!
There is a filter on the sending unit, I would expect it to be clogged up, the ZX tank rusts just like your tank does after all. Don't forget about the little filter inside the fuel pump (same as the 280z)-atlanticz.ca has a great tutorial on its removal. Here is a photo of my old sending unit-you will see what appears to be a tea filter bag on the end-that was something the PO did (who knows why). If yours is original, you will find a cylindrical wire mesh/plastic unit there, which you should be able to clean up. You say that it wouldn't go over 40mph-how high would it rev?

Anyone want a $500 parts car?
Daddz, I've got to strip the old rubber off, touch up the flaking clear coat, and select some new tires...but I'm not in any real rush on that.

One person brake bleeding
I tried to make a system like described, but my local napa claimed to not have any clear tubing (not a surprise really), so I ended up purchasing their version of a one person bleeder. It works ok, though the magnet is not very strong, nor is the tubing long enough. I imagine that if you were doing the job with the wheels off, the tool would work perfectly, however that was not an option for me, since I did the duty on the clock at work...

Anyone want a $500 parts car?
seeing as this connection is holding, here are a few photos. The guy wearing shorts is the car dealer-he ended up hanging out with us until around 1230 am, though we were done stripping the car around 1030. the interior shots of my car show just the first load of stuff...

Anyone want a $500 parts car?
On top of all that, the car was a big pile of rust, however we were able to remove most of the valuable pieces, though the transmission, block and diffy are still there (not to mention the doors and hatch which I couldn't get into my car...) I'll post some photos of the fun within the next couple days, when I have a solid internet connection.

What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9? I would heartily recommend the two Dirk Gently books that Adams wrote later on. Neither reached the acclaim as the Hitchhikers Trilogy (all six of them), but they are still excellent. Also, the book "Good Omens" by Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett...excellent stuff in the vein of Hitchhikers. FWIW.

Brian, you really should go take a peek at it, it's only about an hour away-just drive your Z so the seller sees what he should aspire to!

hls30-17595, Whittier NC
Saw this beauty on the way back from Tail of the Dragon, and waited posting it until I could contact the seller for pricing... Build date 12/70, original crack free dash, fairly rust free (some surface rust on the rails, but not much), some NOS seals-still in original packaging, nice enough American Racing slotted mags, fresh paint (though there is some rust bubbling around the drip rails-wonder what else the paint is hiding)-generally a nice looking vehicle-but $10,000 is just too much. The seller seems to have his head in the clouds (or sand)-he also has a sad looking blue gold edition (cracked dash and t-top panels) that is also being sold for $10,000. The 240 is originally a California car-so he says, anyway. I would expect the guy to lower the price, but I doubt he would lower it to a reasonable price. As is, the car is semi-disassembled (passenger seat is loose, interior panels missing and damaged), no exterior markings-well, you get the picture. I will be going back to the place for spare parts for myself (trashed zx in back with mint rear bumper). I'll get more photos of it then, under the auspices of researching for a potential buyer...
