Found this on ebay, could be a good parts car, though the seller wants to get out of it what he's got in itROFL , which is $1200. Somehow, I don't think he'll get it, especially since there is no engine, and the rust monster, of course... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1972-Datsun-240Z-Maroon-with-moonroof_W0QQitemZ150091140156QQihZ005QQcategoryZ6187QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem from the ad...

They are pretty pricey, don't you think? Speedometer V1-SPM-LR (Red display, MPH): $139 Tachometer V1-TAC-LR (Red display): $129 Water temp V1-WTF-MR (Red display): $69 Oil pressure V1-OPM-MR (Red display): $69 Gas gauge V1-FQM-MR (Red display): $69 Clock V1-DCC-MR (Red display): $59 Voltmeter V1-VOM-MR (Red display): $69 +________________________________ Total for a set of red gauges (not all blue prices were listed) $603 OUCH Also, I wonder how "easy" they would be to program for our cars, and what sort of rewiring would be needed, if any.

Mike, what is the diameter of your Harley pipe? I would be surprised if your local (motor)bike shop didn't have something that would work for the Z-might be worth checking into...FWIW.

Does this mean you're a "gearhead"? Once you get it back, will you be levelheaded? Sorry, I couldn't resist

I might suggest renting a car, then driving around looking for rust free Z's that you can help raise from the ashes of disrepair and neglect.

Ah, yes, the old power brake method. To perform a really good power brake peelout, you need two things: 1) enough torque. 2) enough money to buy a new transmission. If you want a car that can do burnouts, a mid 90's mustang would be a better choice-it's got an engine w/enough grunt, and replacement parts are cheap(er) and easy to come by. Sorry, I'm not picking on you, just being a little cynical. Some cars do better with all out shows of power, and do really well in straight lines. Other cars show superiority elsewhere, namely in stability and agility. You've got one of the latter, IMO. But really, if you do too many "neutral drops" (neutral+Gas, drop to drive), you will be needing a new tranny sooner than later, and most likely new motor mounts; and if you continue with the power brake, well, there are many things that can go wrong, especially with such old components.
  8. OK, it makes sense now. I saw the coil of wires over there-just didn't know what it was for. My concern was that someone had been running the Z around w/o any fan whatsoever thus bringing the health of the engine into mind.
  9. Am I blind, or is it missing its fan blade? (bottom photo) Other than that, looks good.
  10. Wait a second-Ebay is the "middle man," and they are the supplier. The cost is inflated to some degree, since the juice company pays ebay listing costs. And no, they don't tell you what it will do. Just hook it up to any sensor you want, and it will work.

Sounds like you need to move to a larger house, one with a four car garage! That would solve the problem, at least for a while.

Here's a link to the book TomoHawk mentioned. http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/efisystem/280zfuelinjectionbook.pdf It's in PDF, so it may take a little bit to load, but it's definately worth saving to file. Before you go over to Oliver, try to figure it out for yourself. You'll be saving yourself some money ($500!), and you'll be learning about your car.
  13. WHO IS JACK SCHITT? For some time many of us have wondered just who Is Jack Schitt? We find ourselves at a loss when someone says, 'You don't know Jack Schitt!' Well, thanks to my genealogy efforts, you can now respond in an intellectual way. Jack Schitt is the only son of Awe Schitt. Awe Schitt, the fertilizer magnate, married O. Schitt, the owner of Needeep N. Schitt, Inc. They had one son, Jack. In turn, Jack Schitt married Noe Schitt. The deeply religious couple produced six children: Holie Schitt, Giva Schitt, Fulla Schitt, Bull Schitt, and the twins Deep Schitt and Dip Schitt. Against her parents' objections, Deep Schitt married Dumb Schitt, a high school dropout. After being married 15 years, Jack and Noe Schitt divorced. Noe Schitt later married Ted Sherlock, and because her kids were living with them, she wanted to keep her previous name. She was then known as Noe Schitt Sherlock. Meanwhile, Dip Schitt married Loda Schitt, and they produced a son with a rather nervous disposition named Chicken Schitt. Two of the other six children, Fulla Schitt and Giva Schitt, were inseparable throughout childhood and subsequently married the Happens brothers in a dual ceremony. The wedding announcement in the newspaper announced the Schitt-Happens nuptials. The Schitt-Happens children were Dawg, Byrd, and Horse. Bull Schitt, the prodigal son, left home to tour the world. He recently returned from Italy with his new Italian bride, Pisa Schitt. Now when someone says, 'You don't know Jack Schitt,' you can correct them. Sincerely, Crock O. Schitt
  14. Well, I drove @25 miles to school today with the Cold Start Valve disconnected. Upon arrival I popped the hood to check for gas leakage, and there was none. Odd thing-it was in the lower twenties when I started the car, and she started right up and idled/ran very nicely. I was under the impression that the CSV was to assist in exactly that sort of situation.
  15. I agree with Arne, rebuilts are iffy. The brakes were starting to fail on my previous car (92 Accord), so I took it to my usual shop, where they installed a rebuilt master cylinder from carquest. Tech went for a spin, came back, threw it back on the lift and ordered another one. The rebuilt replacement was bad straight out of the box. If you can find a "new" one, go for it, your life depends on it.
  16. Thanks Stephan, I'll check the continuity in the morning. You're right about blowing at 37 psi, but I don't think the valve is leaking, solely for the fact that when I removed it, it was dry, while the pcv valve was wet. Anyway, I'll dig deeper into the situation and keep all informed.
  17. I love this interior color from the first link! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-CALIFORNIA-1972-240-Z-RUNS-AND-DRIVES-GREAT-WHITE-RED-NO-RESERVE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ014QQitemZ330086732308QQrdZ1
  18. It's really slow at work (front gate job, fancy 99% seasonal housing community) so I jut pulled the Cold Start Valve and found it to be messy, but dry. The PCV valve was once again wet (I wiped it dry after the last photos were taken), indicating who know what as the culprit. As per the FSM, I've tried blowing air through the valve, and am not able to.
  19. Not to terribly long ago, I started smelling gas after I parked the car. I poked around a little and quickly found gas on the PCV valve. By on, I mean you touch the valve and your finger becomes wet with gasoline. As far as I can tell, the only way gasoline could reach the valve would be via the Cold Start Valve. Thinking that the valve may be staying on longer than neccessary, I replaced the thermostat, checked the cleanliness of the sensors, and cleaned all the connections on the various thermostat mounted items (one was green with corrosion). Put everything back together, and drove 3.5 miles to work. I thought it best to check all my connections for leaks once I got to work, and found the smell of gas once again. The PCV valve was one again wet with gas, so I do believe that the cold start valve is simply staying open/on. I have disconnected the contact to the valve, and will see if this helps. If not, is there a way to "convince" the valve to close? I was thinking about removing it and soaking it in a solution of some sort, perhaps carby cleaner, in case some crud made its way in there and is preventing it from closing. Any thoughts or suggestions? I have a fire extinguisher in the car, and I really don't want to have to use it.

I agree with Chris on the zx 2+2, they're just ugly, IMHO. If you want a 2+2 for the extra space and fake seating, get yourself a first gen 2+2-the lines are neat and clean, they still have a classic design.

Tony, you are insatiable. Congratulations on your new addition, and where are the photos??
  22. logged in as zbane over there-the datsun/nissan forum is growing. I think it'd be great to get the complete Z line over there, and there are still a few years not represented (daddz filled most of the slots ) Couple of roadsters, hopefully more will show, then of course the Skylines need to be represented...ah, hell, the list just goes on. It will be interesting to see how this site develops, since it is devoted to so many makes-could be fun.
  23. Thanks for the scans, Victor, that's a great article.
  24. I wonder where this ended up. I wonder how hard it would be to swap... after all, if I were to ever do an engine swap, I'd want to stay in the family, seems only right.

Motorsport auto http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/CTGY/7SS the nose and tail pieces should be the same as a coupe, the only difference should be the side skirts, 3/4 windows, and perhaps the rear glass (not sure about that) the items you are looking for are out there, the fun is in the hunt
