A Theory - RHD HS30 Model Standard Exterior Rear View Mirror Fitment
Bottomline, US 240Z's never came with a right-hand side mirror, because they were not required by NHTSA. Cars came with what was required, and nothing more. Just like all the exterior lights were added to meet the minimum safety requirements of the particular country.

Show me your seats
I don't see much lumber support in those seats. Have you checked that out?

What colour of paint is best for restoration re-sale:
Your car's original color is the best color.

replaced head gasket now it does not start!
GET SOME OIL ON THAT VALVE TRAIN!!! It look dry as a bone, even the cam lobes look like they have wear marks on them. I'd fix the cam sprocket and get the timing right.

A review of what's gone - period 240Z exhausts
Well I don't think you'd want this, because it has started developing tiny rust holes at the ends. It looks generally good overall though. I'm going to replace with larger exhaust system.

RearView Mirror Restoration
Worn socket is my biggest issue. The silver around the edges is a bit rough, the mirror is very usable.....except the shake.

Progress on rust repairs
These are awesome photos, first I've seen these types of pictures. I find the middle two photos especially enlightening.

Back to the paint shop (sigh).........grrrr
That may be true, but I paid a paint shop to paint my car. They're paid to overcome these issues. The car will begin to rust if it isn't painted correctly, and they didn't seal the seams that they should have.

Differences between Transmission Crossmembers
Apparently up to HLS30-46000 (L24) the rear engine mounting assembly was 11330-E4100 (up to 7/73) shown above on right for ALL transmissions, and from HLS30-46001 (L26) it was 11310-N3000 (from 8/73) shown above on left for manual only.

Clamp on steering rack?
Carl, I've been pretty happy with the new stock springs and KYB GR-2's plus some poly bushings. The ride seems firm enough for general highway driving where roads aren't perfect. I don't think I'd like anything much stiffer than that. I assume that a firm ride was normal for a Z, though I never had a ride in a brand new one. Frankly I can't imagine what the ride in some of these cars with racing springs and Tokico Illuminas is like. It must be bone jarring.

71 240Z. Muffler position. Vertical or horizontal?
Based on the Datsun dealer parts catalog the original exhaust had an oval "pre-muffler" near the center of the car with a round "muffler with tip" in the rear. Apparently they also used a sealer in the joints that was injected with a syringe.

Valve Cover Torque?
You never want to overtighten gaskets. If the gasket is squishing out the sides, it's way too tight.
