I hate to sound stupid, but couldn't a cracked rubber air intake hose (either before or after the AFM) make a sucking sound?

Don't do it. I sold my '77 when I was 19. It took me 18 years before I managed to get another. I had someone tell me never to sell it, but I didn't listen to them at the time and I regret it to this day.

Austen, I don't think that yours got bent, I think that they were put together haphazardly. Here's some pic of mine taken from the back of the car looking forward.

76Datsun280z, Yep, you got it. That's the peice. Thanks for posting photos. And I agree with you that it looks like a homemade part - it doesn't have the fit and finish that everything else on the car has. Webdawg1, I wish that it were as easy as just bolting it up the only way that works, but with two bolt holes-and nothing blocking the raised part on either side of the front differential crossmember-the part can be attached two ways (four ways actually, but we wouldn't even consider placing the tall part downward.)

I'm the third owner of my Z, and as far as I know the 4-speed in the car is original equipment. I've looked through tons of pictures here and on HybridZ.com and on the few pics that show the front differential crossmember none have this dampener on them. In the case of my car, since it's not just something that a P.O. put on the car, but an actual Datsun part, it will go back on. Besides, it makes a great, solid jacking point. (I just hope that I can figure out which direction to face the darn thing.)

I hate to admit it, but I kinda' forgot which way it's supposed to attach to the front diff. crossmember - does the "built-up" part face the front or back of the car?

Okay, I'm reassembling things after replacing the bushings on a 1975 280z. This piece fastens to the differential crossmember. It's made of 1/2" steel plates and weighs about 10 lbs. What's its purpose? Does it have a name? Is it necessary? not to scale:

Sorry, but you'll need spacers. Otherwise, your tire will most likely be rubbing your springs.

Where have the hatch vents gone?

If you go with polyurethane bushings the best prices that I've found on Energy Suspensions brand bushings are at Summit Racing. May I suggest contacting Gary (a.k.a. "Beandip") to borrow his spindle pin puller if your spindle pin gives you any trouble. I used it and it was a lifesaver.

It is a Z. THAT in itself makes it something special. Welcome to the board!

Mohamed, Let me get this right? If you get a loan it will be from your parents? Interest free? If that's the case then it's a no brainer - Keep the Z and get the loan for the Beemer.

Hey Blue! Welcome to the board, and more importantly, welcome to your dad's ZX. I had an '81 blue/silver ZX that was very similar to that when I was 19. Unfortunately, I put it into the salvage yard because traffic came to a complete stop and I shortened the front end by 2 feet by sliding under an AstroVan - the van got a scratch on the bumper. Had I been travelling at a safer distance it wouldn't have happened. Carl B. brings up some great points that you may want to seriously consider. In fact, you might just want to show Carl's response to your parents. After all, you are thier son and what parent doesn't want to protect thier children - not to mention thier 280ZX and insurance premiums.

Are the 510s the only other Datsun window crank that will fit on the S30's? Or will any of the "retainer clip" type cranks (pre1980) fit?

Tomo, The only thing that's covering my spare ('75 - full size spare) is the carpet in the rear deck. If I had an old, worn out spare cover I wouldn't need to ask the question in the first place. I owned a '77 back in '87-'89 and an '81 in '89-'91 and I only needed to change a flat once while owning those vehicles. And I've managed to drink away a few memory cells since then. The Z that I have now has only been mine since Christmas and it needs some refreshing.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I can work it out from what you've given me. One question - it's been years (18 long Z-less years) since I had a Z and I think that I recall there being some kind of plastic "L" brackets on the bottom side to keep the cover in place. Am I remembering correctly?

Welcome to Z ownership. I wish you the best of luck on your restoration. My first Z was a 2+2 and therefore they hold a special place in my heart + the longer wheelbase lends a smoother ride and they can still be fast as hell.

OMG!!! It makes you wonder what goes on in between some people's ears. I'd love to talk to the person that could do that to a Z - just to see if they're insane or stupid. ...but that's just my opinion and we know what that's worth.
