1972 rear hatch latch deck rot, advise
Several places sell the panel. Motorsport auto for sure. Use the search function or try google to find other places that sell z car parts. I think they are about $125??? Hopefully, that is all the rust there is. Good luck. carl

Hello From Brazil!
Hi Fabio, Good luck with your search! You may have trouble with a couple of your criteria. Under 50k miles is tough to find in a car that is 40 years old. I would be suspicious if someone is selling you one with that claim, especially if you are not here to verify the numbers. Also, it is harder to find one in all original shape that is also pristine and excellent condition. They can be found but it will cost you. This is a good source of information and if you find one that looks good, you may be able to get someone to check the car out for you and give you an honest opinion. Good luck again. carl

Antenna Poll Question
In my opinion, I will be going with something like the black rubber antenna. I have spent a lot of money on my car and had to pick and chose what I put the money toward. The original chrome bumpers are bent and rusty, so I went with replacement fiberglass ones for now. The same with the antenna. I can spend the money where I need it and will likely put a black rubber one on. Someday I may have the money to spend but not now. I like the look of the rubber antenna or something similar. carl

Replacement plastic panels
Here are a couple of pictures to show the color differences. Sorry about the quality. It was last minute and I was using my phone. The panel is a nice color and is not as dark as the picture shows. It would be nice if the interior were entirely this color. Its only when you get to the second picture that you can see the difference in the color of the panel vs. the vinyl. Again, I apologize for the dark pictures. The vinyl is lighter in color as well. carl

Replacement plastic panels
I found a place that sells plastic dyes and paints. I cut a portion of the color chart and think I found the color I am looking for. I don't have the parts with me (I am at work ) To me the color 1006 looks the most like what I was expecting. Anyway, I will try to look closely tonight and see what I think. carl

Replacement plastic panels
I will try to post some pictures tonight. In my car, the original vinyl was a close match to the color of the plastic panels. The new vinyl is dead on but the plastic is tan. Burnt orange was just my vague description of the color. I don't know if I have any of the old panels left to compare to. I think they were in bad enough shape that they were pitched long ago. I will look. carl

Replacement plastic panels
Mike, That is really close to the color of the panels currently. The color of the vinyl and the parts originally was more orange. Almost a burnt orange. I am going to check with classic datsun. carl

Various body parts availability/ sources?
I stand corrected. I would have sworn that I saw them for sale and that they said polyurethane. I checked the website and the ad was nothing like I thought it was. I don't know what I was smoking. Thanks for setting me straight. Carl

Replacement plastic panels
Hey everyone, I recently ordered reproduction plastic panels that are part of the interior. The set that includes the speaker panels by the wheel wells, the dome light, the quarter windows and the rear brake light cover. I just got them today and was unpleasantly surprised to find that the butterscotch color that I ordered was nowhere close to the original. The butterscotch vinyl parts that I ordered were the original orangeish color but the plastic panels were beige to tan in color. It is obvious that the color is painted on as the back sides are black. I got them from Datsun Spirit and they were great to deal with but this is not acceptable. I have several questions for everyone. 1) Do I return them and try to get them from another vendor? They may all use the same supplier and get the exact same thing. 2) Has anyone ordered the butterscotch panels and what were your experiences and from who did you get them. 3) Do I say "screw it" and have the body shop guy or myself repaint them a color that matches the rest of the interior. 4) If I go with number 3, where does one go to try and get a custom paint made that will work with plastic and hold up over time? h I know thats a lot of questions but as always, I appreciate everyones advice. carl

Various body parts availability/ sources?
Check Classic Datsun. I am pretty sure they make the orginal BRE style front air dam that is polyurethane. They also make other fiberglass options. carl

Various body parts availability/ sources?
Hi Dave, There are quite a few sources for parts. The main problem is going to be if they have the part you need/want and how much you want to spend. Ebay is always a good place to check for parts. Especially for things like the hood and tail light lenses. There are usually a set of lenses for sale and if you don't care about the chrome strip, they probably won't be horrendous. A list of sources is a pretty common question so you might check out the search function and see what comes up. I think someone asked this question about a month ago. I will give you a quick list but it may not be complete. Classic Datsun, Motorsport Auto, Banzai Motorworks, Datsun Spirit, Black Dragon, Z Barn?, Z Car Source, Zedd Findings. These are what come to mind immediately. You may need to Google them to get the correct address. The rear lower body panel shouldn't be to hard to find. I have one I can sell you if you need it. The spoiler is available from several different places as well. The hood will be the only problem only because of the shipping expense. Good luck. carl

Outer rear quarter panels
I have had no problems with Tabco. I think with any part, there is always going to be some body work that has to be done. If you can always check ebay, or as I did, buy a donor/parts car. There are places that sell shells or parts of them. Good luck. carl

Prospero Wiring Diagrams
I have one for my 240z and really liked it. I always had trouble reading the black and white ones in the back of the manuals. This was easy to follow and really helped when I was working on the wiring harness. carl

lock repair/refurbish
Does anyone know of any place in the indianapolis area that can repair car locks? On both the door locks and rear hatch lock, the little metal flapper that keeps dirt out no longer stays in place. The flapper just flaps up and down depending on how you hold the lock. I have tried several places and can't find anyone that will take the lock apart and try to fix it. Most of the lock services are mobile and don't have the space. One place knew what I was talking about but didn't know if they still had the equipment. Thanks in advance. carl

How long did your Body Shop take
For me its been almost 1 year and 4 months. This was a stripped shell to finally getting the body and paint almost done. I think you forget the bad (how long its been) for the good (the anticipation of having a great car). carl

Really cool key chain
Way to rain on my parade! I thought these were something a really clever person was making in their garage late at night with a lot of cigarette smoke hanging in the air. Grinding them out and polishing by hand. They are probably made in China in a sweat shop by small children. I still think they are pretty cool. :-P carl

i need some reassurance
Based on the pictures here, it doesn't look too bad. I guess the big things are the frame rails, support structures, and floor pans. What kind of shape are those in? Also, the rockers don't look horrible but hard to see. Is there a lot of bondo holding things together? It may be more than what they want to do but nothing looks terminal. The main thing that I have have been told is everything is fixable, it just depends on how much money you have to spend. They may be thinking a cheap fix and don't think they can get enough air time to cover the expense. Hang in there. carl

Wire size???
Ha! Thats great! I've been known to be a dumbass about a lot of other things. I better just leave it, and not give people more excuses than necessary. I guess I never thought about leaving the harness alone. I know there have to be a lot of cars out there with just as, if not older wiring and they do just fine. I guess I thought that automatically having an old harness, replacing the whole thing would be important. I appreciate your input, as always. carl

Its finally painted!!!!!
Hey Andrew, Unfortunately those are the only pictures I have at the moment. The car is currently in Kentucky. I will be going to visit the car not this weekend but the next (10 days). I will take pictures then. I would love to get it out in the sun to see how it looks with direct light. carl
