I forgot. In the picture above with you sitting in the car with your hand in the transmission tunnel, do you find yourself making vroom vroom noises? At this time the only noises my car makes are the ones coming out of my mouth.

I am sure everyone would agree that watching your clips is amazing. My only complaint is being impatient for the next one. I am also in the middle of a restoration and it can be frustrating how many things come up to slow the project down. I can hardly wait for you to finish so we can see what the car is going to look like! Keep up the good work and as always: post more movies!!! carl

Thanks for the help. I had hoped it would be easier but I will try and mooch one off a friend. I thought a pickle for was for getting those tiny pickles out of a jar!

Help, I am dissambling the front suspension and steering for restoration and I can't get these two parts to separate. I don't know if they are fused due to age or if there is some trick to getting them apart. I have removed the top locking nut and the stem is threaded but don't know if the next part slips off or if it is threaded as well. It is part of the tie rod? I think. I have attached some pictures.

Mike, You can count on me for a good half dozen. I wasn't sure if you could modify a hood prop clip to fit the spot. Be sure to make a bunch. Carl

Wow!!! Those are very nice. Beautiful in fact. Did you do those yourself? They look like they should be framed and on a wall somewhere. Good job.

Are sandblasting cabinets with the built in handpiece and hoses any good? I think the work by the siphon of media as the air passes through the hand piece. Harbor Frieght is having a sale on both a table top and floor standing unit. I have a lot of parts that I would like to clean and repaint. I have a nice air compressor that should give me plenty of power. Carl

What are you using? Let us know how it works when the car is done. Looks great. Carl
  9. Heres one more. I am in the process of restoration and would love more like this. I hate to reuse the originals and don't want to replace with more that will rust. Carl
  10. Thanks for all the help. I will go check them out this weekend and see how they are in person. Carl
  11. I am finally nearing the time when the engine needs to be pulled. My question is what size engine stand do I/ should I get? Harbour Frieght has a 750 lb, 1000 lb. and 2000 lb capacity stand. I am thinking of the 1000lb but thought I should ask first. Thanks. Carl

If money is no object, Ultimate Z up by Chicago can do a total restoration but it can be expensive. I live on the north side of Indy and am going to get a name of someone (you know, a friend of a friend) that has a body shop to work on my z. I hope to get it when my friend gets back from vacation. I will let you know what transpires. Carl

When I redid my seats I popped for the webbing and such from the catalogs. It worked fine. It really does make an improvement. Instead of using the clips they sell (which to me look like staples), I used pop rivets and small washers to keep a clean look. They worked great. Good luck. It sounds like you have a lot of work ahead. Carl

Mine were steel and pretty rusty on ol' number 333. Carl

For what it is worth, I recently purchased a 20D and love it. Money was a big issue for me and I was able to find a flawless used camera and lens for about 550-600. If you have the money I would probably purchase the 30D but you can't go wrong either way. Carl
  16. I purchased a 71 240z parts car and it is a mishmash of parts. One of the headlight scoops is fiberglass the other metal. It has a series one steering wheel and console but has vents in the pillar and none in the hood. It appears to all be original to the car. It almost seems like during this transition period they had parts lying around and just through them together. The used whatever they had. Carl

You may try searching for specific threads about this. I think it may have been talked about before. I think a lot of times the cars were not necessarily painted by popularity. A lot of the early cars were green. Someone explained that they would paint a group all the same color and then ship them over. The next group imported might be orange. Carl

Thanks again. The clips are in a plastic baggy! Carl

This has really been an amazing topic. You can't always believe what you read. I am always impressed with everyone on this site and the knowledge that we all have access to. Carl

Although I am not THE Carl B. I am another Carl B. In Colin Shipways Essential Datsun Z book, it says pretty much the same as the article quoted above. Apparently the original prototype was made with Goertz and was to be powered by a Yamaha engine. When problems arose with the engine developed, the project was cancelled. This was is in 1964. Apparently, it is believed that Yamaha took the prototype to Toyota were it looks remarkedly like the 2000GT. The 240z was revived in 1966 after Goertz had left Nissan. It did retain some of the features of Goertz's designs. Goertz later criticized the 280zx in Car and Driver which led to Nissan denying any involvement from Goertz. Legal issues commenced and then the quote above was made by Nissan to keep Goertz happy. I will fire up my History Channel DVD on the Z car and see if they say anything different. Carl

Does anyone have any suggestions about removing the metal drip rail above the doors? A restoration book says to loosen it up and then pop it off the door frame. I have gently tried this and cannot remove it without bending it. I would like to take it off prior to painting. Any suggestions? Thanks. Carl
  23. It is amazing what you can do with photoshop. With just a few minutes you can blend the two pictures together. I ended up pixelating the picture to help hide some of the defects. It is still hard to get the curves of the truck bed to blend (especially the chrome trim). Carl
  24. If you have more than one copy of the magazine, I would cut one apart so you could lay the pictures completely flat on the scanner. It makes it harder (not impossible) to reattach the photos because the ends curve down and distort the picture slightly. Carl

I am finally getting around to posting the pictures of my gas tank back from restoration. I took it to a Gas Tank Renu place south of Indianapolis. I am glad to have it back and in good shape but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I thought it would be some kind of powder coating process but it is a thick tar like substance baked on. It just doesn't look as clean but it is a gas tank after all. The first two are before pics of the outside and the inside. The last two are obviously after pics. What you can't see in the before picture are the many small pin holes in the bottom. Carl
