1978 280Z Restoration
I'll second the vote for MSA. I really liked the set I got. It had the padding already attached and look really nice. Good luck. carl

Michael, You need to start a new thread for this question. Not only will it allow people to know your questions, but hijacking a thread is bad manners. Go to the forums link at the top and follow through to were it says New Thread. Good luck. carl

Clutch removal
I have a newbie question. As stated in a previous post, I am trying to put my engine on a stand. I want to repaint the block and work on cleaning it up prior to having it rebuilt. The problem is, the clutch needs to be removed before the engine can connect to the stand. How does the clutch come off? Is there a special tool or technique involved? Thanks. carl

A squeak in my transmission!
Alright, so I was taking off the transmission tonight to put the engine on a stand. I didn't know what to expect. Was it going to be a mess? Was fluid going to gush out all over the floor when I undid the bolts? I was not expecting what I found! My first thought was, "How did they get in?" I thought it was a sealed system and stood there just scratching my head. Then I finally realized that I had removed the starter in the past and that left a nice little entrance. Jeez! :stupid: carl

Hmmm, I wonder if I will have this problem with mine. At the body shop, the guy had to slam the door pretty hard to get it to close. He said this is common with new seals and should improve with time. If they are too robust I may have to change them in the future. carl

Chassis plate
Maybe someone can take a quick swab, run it through a fetzer valve and determine the precise age within a matter of seconds that would then lead everyone to conclude the correct vin number! Glad you found the number and someone to make a reproduction plate. carl

Stu, As Mike has shown, doing a search for this topic will uncover a vast amount of threads. This topic is a fairly common one and has been discussed to death. There are many vendors out there for z cars parts. I have ordered some parts from Black Dragon with good results. I recently purchased a complete set of rubber seals from Motorsports Auto and am very happy with them. Some other places to check would be Z Car Source, Z Barn, Banzai motorworks, Datsun Spirit, Zedd Findings. This is another topic that can be searched for using the search function. Good luck. One thing to remember, after changing the weatherstripping, it can be very difficult to close the door until the seals compress some. Let us know how things come out. carl

Early Series 1 Fuel Door Question
I was able to check on the progress of my car today and number 333 has a spring on its flap. The one disclaimer I will make is that I am "pretty sure" its the original flap. There is a chance that it could have been from the donor car. carl

Chassis plate
"An 'RLS30' plate is not going to be any use for an 'RS30' though....." Is this referring to a left hand drive verses a right hand? I hadn't thought about that. Not that it matters but I agree with the above. It would take a lot to "accidentally" remove the firewall number. Something doesn't seem kosher. carl

Reusing glued-on weather strip
I would think that if the rubber is still in good condition and not too dry or cracked it can be re-used. At first I thought you meant to re-use the glue! Hah! carl

Chassis plate
Hi Rob, Banzai Motorworks makes a reproduction plate for the 260z. I would check with them. I think he requires a photocopy of the title to prevent people from forging them. Good luck. carl

help with window parts
Help! I finally have the body shop guy working on my car and he has asked for some parts that I can't find. I haven't been able to find anyone that still sells the parts. The parts are from the inner workings. It has to do with the door mechanism. There is a pivot point between the inner door handle and the door latch. There is a bolt, a nut, a washer and a bushing type thing that holds the pivot point. I have attached a picture. It is the best I can do right now but I need all the parts associated with the parts labelled 4. I know the bolt is a 6mm bolt. I am pretty sure I can find a replacement for the bolt, the nut and the washer. The part that I don't know what to do about is the plastic bushing/flange that is part of the mechanism. Any and all help would be appreciated! Thanks. Oh, ideally I need to get him the part by Friday as that is when I happen to be going to Kentucky where the car is. carl

240z bumper bolts
Sorry, I wasn't thinking when I posted originally. The rear bumper mounts. The U shaped brackets that bolt to the rear body and then the bumper bolts to it. Mainly, the size of the bolts that mount the bracket to the body. carl

240z bumper bolts
Hey, What is the size of the bolts that hold the bumper brackets (the spacer between body and the bumper) on? The body shop is FINALLY making an effort to work on the car and I don't know if they have the bumper bolts. Are they 10mm or 8mm or something else???? Thanks. carl

Car Haulers
Hi everyone, Well, the body shop guy told me he wanted to have my car done by next friday. Obviously, I am not holding my breath as he has told me this before! But, on the off chance that he may actually follow through with this, I need to find a way to get the car from Lexington KY to Indianapolis IN. Its only about a 3 hour drive but I would rather not rent a uhaul truck and trailer. Does anyone have any recommendations for hauling companies? I would like an enclosed trailer for the obvious reason as the car has a new paint job and don't want rock chips or bugs all over it. Thanks. carl

FRP shells available?
I would think that the rigidity of the car would a problem. When you look at the picture of the front end, it looks like there are only the frame rails with the body panels attached at points not the unibody construction of the original. I would think the front end would be wobbly. carl

FRP shells available?
I was hard at work and surfing ebay and found this for sale. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-240-Datsun-240z-FRP-Body-Shell-All-Panels-Brand-New-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2306f30b3aQQitemZ150440446778QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks#ht_1463wt_925 I am not sure what my feelings are. It would be good for racing but then its not a "real" z car. At least it wouldn't rust. Would this be titled as a datsun or a kit car? Has anyone seen this before? What are everyones thoughts? Just curious. carl

new here
Did you get the car? It looks like it might have a dash cap?? There are replacement door skins that you can purchase and do yourself or have them redone by professionals. Everything from the plastic panels in the back, to the vinyl, to the seat foam/covers, carpet, you name it. I agree that I would leave it stock initially until you get a good feel for the car (unless the engine is shot and needs replacing). This also gives you the chance to use the car and give you more money in pocket to fix it up! No offense to you, but a big concern around here is when there are young kids posting about wanting to swap engines and go racing in the street. We have seen too many people wrap their cars around a pole and not only kill themselves but innocent people as well. I thinks its awesome someone your age loves z cars. They are a timeless classic. The great thing is that the engine bay is large enough to give you a wide selection of engines and modifications. There may be a lot of things you will want/need to change before the engine. I didn't see if there was a lot of stuff already done to the car but besides the interior, you may also change the bushings, exhaust, springs/shocks, need to take care of numerous rattles etc. Let us know what happens. carl
