Just thought I'd give an update......after we had the tank done and we thought all would be well.....the car still ran bad...spitting and sputtering. Cleaned the fuel injectors, those were good, thought maybe the catalytic converter was the problem, it wasn't. Turned out to be the fuel pump. Put a new one in this weekend and the car is like brand new! Never has ran as good as it does now! I know everything we did, needed to be done anyway, but I am so glad that I can drive it outside of town without worrying it is going die. I want to thank everyone for their advice! I know I will need more as time goes on, because eventually will start the body restoring.

I just got my gas tank dropped Sunday and the contents are alot of crud and rust.(car sat for 6 years) I have been reading many of the forums and am trying to decide if I should take it in to a radiator shop and have it boiled and resealed or just get a new one. Does anyone know where you can get a new tank besides a dealership? Or has anyone had luck with having their tank redone? The prices locally vary and being a woman don't want to be taken for a ride...so to speak... by saying the tank needs to remanufactured...which is where the price gets ugly, and wonder if a new tank would be cheaper. Any advice anyone has would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I got the new alternator for the car and should have went in easy. Nope....everything was fine until we went to plug in the wires. Should have slid right in. They wouldn't. Can't get the wires to attatch at all. Also, the fusable link seems to have got hot and has melted together. Any comments or suggestions?? I am at a loss right now
  7. Thank you, I will! Everyone has been really nice and am finding alot of great info here!
  8. I appreciate your thoughts, DatsunZsRule. That makes sense and hope it solves the problem.
  9. Thanks John for fuel injector info! I was thinking the tank would have to be replaced too Stephen. We flushed it out, but still doesn't run right. (when it runs) It's become an obssesion tho and I will get it running!
  10. I have had the same problem with mine too. My 82' 280zx sat for 6 years before I got it in June. I am getting slightly frustrated these days with where to begin. Seems now my alternator went bad...killed the battery. Once I get that fixed I can work on the same problem you are having. If anyone has any clue why that happened, please let me know. Supposedly when the car was parked it ran great. Does sitting for this length of time do this much damage??
  11. Virto Yes we are almost neighbors. I can't wait to get her fixed up and a new paint job!
  12. Thanks for the welcomes everyone! :classic: I am in the Chicago area. I am slowly finding out it takes money...lots of it to fix this car up....well to even getting running right! It sat for 6 years before I got it. But it has become an obsession!

I just bought a 1982 Datsun 280zx the beginning of June. It's a sweet car, but needs lots of work. I can't wait to read thru the forums and hopefully get some great ideas on how to restore her.
