another thing that it will help to stop is vapor lock , because the fuel is pumped from the tank and what isn't used is returned to the tank , and not left in the line to heat up and boil. That is why Datsun added the electric pump, mostly to stop vapor lock in the summer. The fuel rail passing over t he exhost manifould was wrapped with asbotoses to try and stop the heat. I have driven my 240 this past summer in 115 degree heat and had on problem even in traffic.

If the mech. pump is bad and you add a new electric unit you may vary well be pumping fuel into the crankcase! If the diaphram in the engine mounted unit is faulty fuel will pass through the hole. You can eliminate the engine mounted pump altogether and just run the electric. This is what I am doing.

If the mechanical pump is faulty there is a vary good possability that if the diaphram is bad that fuel is running into the crankcase! Now that being said and something to look out for. If you need to replace the electric pump and have an access to a bone yard , find a Masda RX-7 that is NOT fuel injected. You should be able to get one for about $15.00 and they work just as good and the Datsun unit. Just be sure it is for a carberated car. This will be a low pressure pump.

I am sure there are good paint shops in the area , just look for a good body shop that does custom stuff and not just the pannel replacements . go to a few car shows and ask around . When you see a really cool looking paint job on a car , ask who did the work . soon you will be hear ing the same names over and over again . Check them out, they wont be cheep but you get what you pay for.
  6. Has anyone ever heard of a cam called " Arson " or something like that ? I don't know if it is a Brand name or a model. Any info. will help . Thanks
  7. when you install the zx dist. you must also use the bottom part that the dist bolts onto from the zx . The old one will not work. At least if you are going from a points ignition to a electronic one like in my case from a '73 to a '79zx . I am not sure about say a '77 280 ignition to a zx , but it wouldent hurt to get the one from the zx just to be sure. Also pay attention to the 12 80 markings on the little black box on the side of the dist . If different it wont work vary well.
  8. go to geocities.com/zgarage2001/engine.html all your questions will be ans. go to the end of all the information and there is a diagram . If the tack will not work switch the wires to the dist. then it will contrary to other info . Use the zx coil and do away with the ballest resister .

There is a bone yard here in oregon that has only Z cars and on about 11/2 acres . Well recently they sold off half of the property and there must have been 50 or more early zs sent to the cursher. All told likely 75 to 80 total . Sad sad day . They saved a lot of parts but fenders hoods windows hatchs all gonzo. Alot of engines and transmissions gone. I went there to see my friend that works there and bought his engine from his own car , '82 with cam headers injection and only 38k since rebuild , $500. I pick it up on friday comes with clutch and all even the starter and intake with new injectors which I am not using. But as these go we are all deminished in our source of parts. The message SAVE ALL THE PARTS Y OU CAN ! I have seen this before when I was building my '32 3 window in the late '50s . Soon parts will be no more.
  10. I will look him up thanks , reminder about the rollers for the windows. Gary
  11. I want to convert from a 3speed auto to a 4speed , what is involved in this mod. ? help if you can . Is the shifter in the same place or do I also need to modify the consoule? do I need to also get the drive shaft from the maxama ?
  12. I just bought a L28 engine its a 82 that has an after market cam mild for street use, and headers I am going to run SUs the engine is just broken in . My question is that I am presently running an automatic trans. and want to stay with one , but would like to run a 4 speed. The Maxama unit is what I am thinking of but what is involved in making this mod? I know drive shaft , most likely but do I use the maxama shaft and have it worked over or go with the present one . I am thinking of replaceing the diff with a r200 if I do that then what is needed in the way of drive line and location of shifter vs. console top side? Another thing , will the half shafts from the R180 work with the R200 ? I plan on a .390 for the diff . thinking that with the overdrive 4th that and the .390 should make a good cruser with enough ponies to pull the gears. All this is in a '73 . Has anyone here done this mod. or know of someone I can contact t hat has??
  13. looking vary good , and congradulations on both fronts. all the best . gary

For 2many great to have you back, and I agree with the signals being run . I was with the Fire Dept in L A for 22yrs and spent over 6yrs assigned to Rescue Amb. and this thing of running the yellow turning red is the thing that kills more people than we all realize. Out of habbit I still look both ways even when the light is green and it has saved my butt more than once. and for 26ounce some times I wonder about the "cow catchers" on the front of these SUs especially the luxury cars, I guess that they are cheeper than a penile implant!

There has been some good advise given already but I can see that you already have your mind made up that you are going to redo a car . I would say restore but that means bring it back to origional and I dont think that you want to spend 15 to 20 grand. I am talking here form experience in that I have been there done that and have the tea shirt .Not with a Z but but with Detroit iron . Any Z that you buy ,that you can afford , other than the the guy with the 10 large, will have plenty to do and work on. Think of it this way , If you buy a car in need of paint , and just a little body work , and the interior is origional so it will be 25 to 30 yrs old. But the running gear is great trans. is good strong engine and all. First of all you are most likely looking at about $2000.00 to make it right. A good paint job I mean a good one will start at $1300.00 and thats if you dont do the under the hood and door jams. Now if you have any body damage add another $700. on top of that. Now interior we are looking at another $300.00 lets say because you can do most of that your self. We havent even started talking of rust , witch is the down fall of these cars. This can get costly ! Do you see where I am going here ? Please before you start and blow what cash you have on some Z that has been painted over rust and has problems like this . Do your home work and buy the cleanest most rust free car y ou can afford . You will be so much ahead of the game and will be driving the car insted of having it on jackstans. There are fine Zs in the western states away from the road salt that you could drive home . These little cars are built with no main frame like your truck the "frame is sheet metal" it's unibody construction so when it starts to rust in between the welded structure its trouble big time . Thats why you dont see many zcars in the states that use salt on the roads unless the owners park them in the winter. As for the weight of the cars My '73 is 2500 lbs. if I remember right and the HP depending on the year but in the area of 150 when new. Any way I am sorry for the length of the post. I hope I helped , Gary
  21. I am leaving for Palm Springs on Sat. and will be gone for at least a week so if things do fall apart let me know I am still interested , especially since I now have a great engine. I will be here till at least Sat. ZZZEEya Gary
  22. I just bought a '81zx flat top engine with a cam and headers and it was built 38k ago , its a strong engine. $500. I think it is a good buy and plan for it to go into my 240 since I missed the '77, this engine is inJected with a ported intake and new injecters. I plan on running SUs . the guy I bought the engine from built it for him self ,bu t they are now having an additon to the family so the z has to go. Your '77 was the cleanest Zcar that I have seen and who ever bought it got a great car. The only thing that held be back was it was a 2+2 . That is why I hesitated . When you said that it had dammage to the roof I thought it was more extensive not just that little rust . O' well thats history . The samples are in the mail for the window cling. All the best, Gary
  23. I agree 100% on what you say , the thing that twisted my tail is the crack about pigknuckle what ever. That was condecending and pompus and that is what tore the rag off the bush for me thats all . I realize and bow to the superior knowledge Alan has of the ins and outs of Datsun/Nissan in europe , but that doesnt apply here if the differences are not available, so its a non issue. I think that we have hashed this over enough and I hope that in the future we have a good give and take , I value Alans knowledge and am thankful of his willingness to share it.

Here in the US the 260 was in 1974 only. You most likely know all about that already . Was it because of the close proxinity of Japan to your country that there are such a variation in the cars from what was inported in the US . Not long ago I was trying to find information about a L20 engine with a y70 head . And no one could give me any info . on it even at the dealer. . My friend has a 240 with that combo. . I finaly found a Aussi. and he was able to come up with a lot of information as it seems that it is common in your country . How this engine got here is a mistery so far. There is one thing I do want to say to you and yours, we here are sorry for your loss in Indonesia.
