Heater Cable Ends
Ken You need to enlist the help of a skinny kid that can crawl around beneath the dash. I just took my heater cables out and I am 6' 170lbs and it is not fun. I move the seats back, lay on my back with my legs over the seat back. Have ALL of the tools you will need because you do not want to get in and out of the car. On the drivers side the long cable is held with a phillips screw in a retainer and the cable is held with a phillips screw on the valve. The short cable is held on the support counsel with a special clip that holds the cable and snaps into position, the cable end is held with a phillips in the valve. Both cables feed along the left side of the center counsel around the radio. On the passenger side the shorter cable goes to the heater valve, phillip screws hold it. The longer cable feeds past the heater motor and connects to the valve near the firewall, another two phillips screws. Bob M

Stop light probem
I had my 72 240z repainted last year and had to make all of the lights work again. Recently, the stop lights stopped working. If I put 12v to the brake light switch, the tail lights do not light. I have the wiring diagram but ran out of ideas of how to trace the problem, any ideas? Bob M

Hagerty's Collector Car magazine has a 240Z in it
I have Haggerty for my 72z. It is insured for $ 15k. I also have had Haggerty for my wooden boat since 1990. They are the major insurer of classic wooden boats in the US. I have only heard positive things about them from people who have had claims. Bob M

Air or no air....
I bought an a/c system from ebay from a 73 240z and threw away the compressor (big and heavy) I used a small unit on the left lower side of the motor and had new lines and a bracket made. On a hot day these Zs get very warm. Bob M

Paint stripping question
Mally02 I stripped my 240z with a chemical stripper one panel at a time and sent them to a body shop where they were sanded with 80 grit paper and epoxy primed. I could work at my own pace this way. I finally took the shell to the shop to finish the job. The panels were repaired and returned to me for fitting and final prep work before painting. I could have sanded the paint with 80 grit paper myself and saved the mess of chemical stripping. You need to remove any residue of the chemical stripper before epoxy priming. Bob M

Tricks to get the windshield trim back in
I installed a new rubber on the windshield and tore it installing the trim. I had a glass man install a new rubber and he installed the gasket on the glass first, then installed the trim in the gasket and finally installed the assembly on the car. He did the same to the hatch glass as well. Since your glass is already installed you can try to install the trim but this guy took my glass out and started from scratch and said it was the best way to get the trim in right. Bob M

What..cough,cough, Do You Think....
mally002 Your 240z is one of the nicest I have seen, great color combination. Congratulations. I am glad to hear that you have solved the fume problem. Like all Z owners, I had a problem also and I placed a bucket of dry ice in the car with a fan. I was surprised that the "smoke" came out of the drain holes in the frame rails and not the back panel or firewall. I thought I would add this to the thread in case someone tried all of the usual cures and still had fumes. Bob M

Got my Z running, needs more fuel
You might want to check with ztherapy since you are using SUs. I bought new needles from them for a 280 motor. Bob M

Sound Deadening Inside Doors?
I cut the sound deadening material into strips that would fit through the openings in the door. My glass and operating mechanism was out so it was easier. I covered most of the door panel but not all, about 80%. the door sounds solid when it is closed which is what I wanted. I also tried to fit some into the door jam but that is another story. I ended up spraying undercoating in there to help deaden the sound. Bob M

240z A/C parts
I paid $100 for a complete A/C unit from a 73 240z about 3 months ago. It is one of the dealer after market units that was very popular. It checked out to be in very good condition. It did not have the harmonic balancer, but everything else was there. I thought it was a fair price. Bob M

Door reassembly question.
Zak It goes together nicely if you take your time and go step by step. I think it is easier to install all of the parts with the door mounted than on the ground. The Z Restoration book is a good guide. If you are changing the weather strip, it is easier to align the door after the parts are installed and get it perfect before installing the weather stripping (my opinion) Bob M

question on which seat is driver side for 240z
I have recovered the seats in my 1972 240z and am not sure which side is which. Does the release lever on the seat bottom of the drivers seat go on the door side or on the tunnel side of the seat? Another question, on the seat backs I noticed that where the bracket bolts screw into the seat back frame , on one side the frame is flat and on the other side the threaded nut is raised. Which side does the raised threaded part face for the drivers side, on the door side or the tunnel side? Thanks Bob M

Good SF Bay Area Paint Shop?
oiluj I just had my 72z painted at Grace Body Shop in South San Francisco. Their web site is gracebodyshop.com. I am extremely pleased with the body work and paint work they did on my car. I live in San Bruno and you are welcome to stop by and judge for yourself. Contact Rich for an estimate, they are extremely picky with preaping the car but there are no excuses with the finished job. Their prices are fair. PM me if you would like to see my car Bob M

Clock question
I just went through your experience. I bought a quartz clock on ebay that worked for $30. It was for a 280z The fuse blew during the install and I didn't think the clock worked. If your quartz clock works on the test bench and you have power under the dash (the map lite and interior lite are on the same circuit) it should work in the car. I am not sure how accurate the clock is, I am satisfied it works at all. Bob M

heater switch schematic info
I have a 1972 240z and the heater blower switch does not have 12v from the plug under the dash. My 240z chassis electrical schematic does not show a heater switch or wiring. Maybe I missed it. Where does this circuit get its power? Thanks Bob M

Antenna Mast Swaping
I am going through this and was informed that the 240z(70 -76) antennas are smaller than the 77 + 280z, and the later model will not fit into the earlier 240z because it is too tall. Also, the early mast connects to the center of the spool with a cotter pin on the 240z and a nut or bolt on the later model. They are not interchangeable. I hope this answers your question Bob M

Looking for Paint Shop in N. CAL (Frisco) etc.?
I just had my 72 240z painted by Grace Body Shop in So San Francisco. Richard is the owner at 650 873 8166 or gracebodyshop.com. I was very particular about the quality of work since I wanted the car to be show quality. They did the prep work, setting the gaps and making sure the body panels were perfect. There are a lot of body shops that repair damaged cars in the Bay Area but this place is set up to handle very high quality work. There pricing was about the same as any other shop but they took the extra time to make things correct. If this is the kind of paint job you are looking for I will highly recommend Grace Body Shop Bob M

A/C conversion question
I have a Nisondenso compressor from a Honda that I would like to use on my 72 240z. It fits where the smog pump mounts but must be mounted upside down so the fittings face away from the motor. Does anyone know if this compressor can be operated upside down without ruining the unit? Bob M
