  1. For a 240z, with Stage II cam, 1980zx distributor, exhaust system, what would be better. 40mm Triple Carb kit, or the Holley 4BBL Carb? How would these two compare in availble performance for the L24? The Holley does seem like it would be nice as I wouldn't have to keep 3 Carbs in sync, but only if it is worth it. Would it even be much better then stock Carbs?

Looks good. :devious: How much was it? I have this in my list of things to buy when I have money. http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/PSDC03/23-4206 If you can sell them cheaper, you might be able to make a little cash off eBay. btw, how secure is that? I know that it won't kill anything, but how heavy is it?

Based off eBay, you may not have to spend $10k on the car itself. Most the stuff on there now is $7k and it all looks great! Though if you are wanting a 240z only, (no 260, or 280's) then I would start looking now as great stuff is hard to come by. You might end up buying earlier then you think. For that kind of money, there shouldn't really be anything that you should have to worry about. The only concern with these babies is rust, though even at that price is seems hard to find. Look everywhere. The bottom, under the battery tray, under the carpet, in the spare tire whole, ect. For that price, you should be able to get a great condition Z, get it shipped out and put some upgrades on it. Sway bars front and rear, brake upgrades, basic maintenance, tires, 4-row radiator, and a 5-speed transmission.

What, these ones? :cheeky: I have never seen them for sale anywhere. Best beat might to find an old Z for a few hundred and just buy that and swap the wheels. Could have a parts car, another project car, or maybe make it look a little nice and turn around and sell it.
  5. Ummm.... I would say $2,000 tops. Normal heads go up for $500, so I would say that $1,500 should cover labor, and parts. Though that includes everything. Would I do this? I think that I would if I had money. I would have several different Z's tuned to much different specs.
  6. Some people would buy into it no doubt. Performance gains I would see wouldn't be worth the cost. Though other modifications would take advantage over DOHC like a turbocharger. But for that price, people would rather just keep their SOHC L motor, or get a V8 or RB/SR motor. Hell, you can get a 4800 Vortec motor with everything except a tranny for $500 almost brand new. That right there gives you 300/300 stock.

Get a Hayens manual. It will become your new best friend. Google might answer your question. If the oil cap says some kind of oil, just use that unless you want something better. Me, I just used my good old Castrol GTX 5w-30 or 10w-30 and anti-sludge or high mileage depending on the season and car which I am putting it in. Used the same for my 240z and all runs fine. Plus from everyone that I have heard (mechanics and non-mechanics), Castrol is supposed to be the best by far for the cheap end of oil. Brother even had an experience that is sort of funny. Changed his oil with a mechanic buddy for normal maintenance. His buddy said things like, "You put in so and so oil in didn't you? I can tell because of blah blah blah. With these other bad oils you can tell because of blah blah blah. Use Castrol if you don't use any of the fancy stuff."

Crazy. Would it give any HP benefits? There is some supercar that can run on E85 and pumps out 50 more horses then on 91 octane. Though that motor was designed to take advantage of E85, so I am guessing it will have little effect on the L motors, especially when they don't change much for current E85 motors. Propane would be cool because it is really cheap, but much more work. Was going to CNG my old truck before I had to sell it.

Can the L24 be converted to run on E85? What kind of work would need to be done? Also, would any benefits be seen from the use of E85 over regular petrol? What about propane too?

This place will help you a bit in your decision. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=114798 Basically, if you go with a R200 3.7, 3.9 or 4.11 diff, it would be ideal to get a 5-Speed tranny I believe from a 1980zx. It seems that either one of these diffs with that tranny provides the best acceleration increases. Also with the R200 you get into the LSD area which is always a plus to have. The R200 will add some weight and required modifications, but I think that the gains will far out way the added work and the wee bit of added weight.

Just start out advertising high. Say $10k. There are a lot of people on ebay who will drop that kind of money for a great conditioned car that runs with a few modifications. Then just lower from there. Not really sure the value. These cars for me always seem to be hard to judge.

To bad I don't have my Z here. Could have joined you! Those roads up in that part on TN/NC can get pretty crazy. Have fun, but mind the cars in front of you and watch out for what is behind you. Also watch for Semi's as they too like to drive dangerously.
  13. Wow that is a nice Z. Was expecting almost the complete opposite. That would be a sweet buy. What I am thinking of doing is when my S10 dies, buy a S30 Z car, drop a Viper motor in there (Its a dream, but I know it will be a V8), and use the I6 for a rat rod.
  14. Now that is an increase.

If you do add some more boost, it would be an excellent idea to install an inter-cooler if one is not already installed. Then you can crank that turbo up to peak efficiency without a problem. Plus should give a nice hp increase on stock psi numbers.

Ebay! I have found the eibachs for $160 before which isn't much of a price difference. But a rear disc conversion brand new with everything you need for $350!!! with slotted cross-drilled rotors and 2 ss lines. Thats $500 cheaper!!! You can get a Tokico Illumina Strut and Spring kit off ebay for a little over $400.

Wow! That has to be one of the cleanest 240's that I have ever seen. I can not wait for my car to be looking like that. So CLEAN!!!! Just need a job, few more upgrades, re-chromed and paint. Plus I need all the emblems because I am missing all but 2. IMO, what would really help make that car better is if that antenna goes, and a smaller one is put in its place. Like one of those 8" universal black rubber antennas for $15. How is the interior in that bad boy?
  18. Am I the only one who caught this? Datsun is not Toyota. Datsun IS Nissan. IMO, with the Z car, even if you barely know a thing about cars, these are the best things to learn on. Open up the engine bay, and everything is laid out for you, you can see EVERYTHING, very little going on, and not much complication. Plus once you start getting dirty, it is heaven compared to others that I have worked on in the past.
  19. That are some very nice numbers for that old of an N/A motor. That kind of money though would be better spent pimping out your current L motor. Or even buy a clip from Japan, have someone install it, get performance upgrades for it installed by someone else, upgrade your brakes, diff, paint, interior, and on.
  20. I have noticed that TheZStore has 6 stages. I never looked into a performance camshaft to help get more out of my L24. Stage II does look the best for what I want. Though what I am looking for is what are the differences from the stock to Stage II cam? Does it increase HP, and generally how much? Or does it just basically shift and/or strengthen the power band? Man I need a high paying job. :hurt:
  21. The thing about ordering online, is that you can get tires sometimes that the dealers can not. For me, I was looking for a high performance tire for my 14" rims. I called everyone in the Santa Cruz area and all that they could get for me was economy tires. Looked online, and the only place that I found some were on TireRack.com. Plus they were $30 cheaper then what I was being told over the phone for economy tires. Then I bought them! $248 for 4 high performance 50,000 mile tires, with added full coverage warranty, and shipping. I would say not bad at all. 215/65R15s for my S10 cost me $400 at the store. That was on the cheaper side of things too, and doesn't include extended/full coverage warranty.

On the back plate of the diff, there will be two bolts. The lower one (bottom) is to drain it, and the one a little higher (nearer the middle) is to fill the sucker back up. Once liquid starts pouring out of the upper hole, then she is full. If you have changed your tranny fluid, this is the same thing.
  23. Stock 350 will give you more horsepower though the Twin-Turbo can push more power with only an ECU tweak. 350 could take advantage of a ECU tweak, but not like how 2 turbochargers can. V8 Pros: -Sound -Overall possible HP. Gains about .5L with just a stroke, more with a bore. -Doesn't say no to turbochargers, superchargers, and nitrous. -More parts available for this motor to custom build it -parts will be cheaper. -6-Speed possibilities -High low end torque numbers Cons: -Going to be heavier -Economy -Harder and more time consuming power mods V6 Pros: -Easy power mods -Cheaper power mods -Turbo PSI increase with an ECU or boost controller -High end power -Economy Cons: -I hear these motors are pains to fit in -5-Speed -Turbo Lag -No low end torque These are just some of the stuff that I can think of off the top of my head. I would probably pick the Twin-Turbo. I would like the V8, and keep it stock as working on power increases on these, I wouldn't want to have to do every time. This is why I would get the Twin-Turbo. Spend a few hundred on a handful of times, get the job done in just an afternoon and have up to an 80hp increase. I would look into the RB26. Its a Twin-Turbo 2.6L with just about the same power as the 3.0L V6 Twin-Turbo, and the RB25 has more stock potential with or without stock parts then the 3.0L. I also think that they are both the same prices online.
  24. Maybe the owners were trying to go for the rat rod looks.
