Good point on block rebuild...
I just got off the phone with my Z shop. They will do the valve job. Forgot who posted it, but thanks for the specifics that I should say! . Though I was talking on the phone to the guy, and he was saying that if I get the larger valves put in, and the stage III cam, that I should do a rebuild on the bottom. Said that the Pistons rings might go out. I would love to rebuild the block, but don't have to if I don't NEED to. You know what I am saying? I have X amount of funds and want to dump it into the engine bay, some exterior and all my interior, while getting my motor running. I know that it is a good idea, but is it necessary? If it is, I might as well just find a lower mileage L26 or L28 and put that in, or get that rebuilt instead. Heck. If I do need too, I guess that is just something that I will do at home. Just pay for parts, take everything apart and put it back together. Only pay those guys to clean it for me. What do you guys think? Engine has 100,000 miles on it, been sitting for while, and made a nice 3,000 mile trip home. Did act funny past 75mph. Was like it lost all power. Haven't figured out what the problem is. Could that problem been because of the block? I was thinking more fuel related myself, thus new lines and an electric pump on the way, a long with rebuilt carbs.

Finding shop for head work!
Ok! That works out better. Will have to recheck these two shops. The new local Z store that I have just found doesn't do any machining so referred me to a shop that they use to do that kind of work, and they said no. I think that I will start calling around gain once I get my parts in. Figure things out from there as I go. Get the kit, and start calling in the morning so that I can get everything dropped off by noon.

Finding shop for head work!
Ok. So I found a shop some 20 minutes from my house that works on Datsuns. Though they do not do any kind of machining. Now, I am kind of at a loss. I just keep getting referred to people whom do not work on these engines. Now, does any one know of a shop in Nashville, Knoxville, Atlanta, Ashville, Spartanburg, Birmingham, Huntsville or anywhere in between that do work on these heads? All I wanna do is get these valve ports enlarged for 280z valves! How much difference will these larger valves really make? May not be able to get it done.

4-speed w/ new diff
So, is this a bad idea? I was over at the transmission calculator site. I was thinking of keeping the 4-speed since I really enjoy it. Checking out the different differential ratios, seems like a new diff might be on its way out, or the 4-speed. Anyone with a 4-speed and higher diff ratio then stock? Looking at it, the 3.54 diff seems pretty much the same as the 3.36, just a minor difference. Still pretty much 3,000rpm at 65mph, but once you get to 3.7 and higher, things seem to start going out the window. 3,000rpm = 60mph w/ 3.7. Mostly concerned of top gear RPM count at higher speeds and it just seems like everything went out the window. Acceleration sure does look quiet nice looking at it, but the RPM count in 4th gear at speeds of 60 and higher seem to just be way too high for my likings. Don't travel often on the interstate, but when I do, I like to go at least a minimum of 65mph. Was hoping to stay 4-Speed w/ new diff. So maybe only a 3.54 diff if I stick with the 4-speed, 3.7 diff tops?

Performance Cam Pulley
So, I just noticed that their are adjustable performance cam pulleys for the Z. How exactly do these work? 8 way adjustable or something like that. Are the stock ones 3 way adjustable? Was looking at it and noticed three holes with their own numbers. Doubt that I will get one. Just curious at how exactly they work.

Half Exhuast
So you have the 6-1 manifold and that is it? Nothing else on the exhaust? That sounds freaking awesome! That is what I want right there! Maybe a touch quieter. Stock my engine sounds like that but much quieter. Maybe I will just get a manifold, and then get a shop to fit me up a pipe. If I fell like I need a muffler, I can just always go back to get one put on.

I'm back! Cam upgrade.
$3k to $4k in parts for the whole car. Performance parts, interior parts, exterior parts. ect. ect. I have a total of $6k'ish to play with. The head needed to be removed because of a leaky gasket. All I was planning on doing is taking the head to a shop to get cleaned, not machined. While it is in the shop, I think that I will just have them install my cam kit that I am going to order. Was thinking of having them just port out the valves to use the higher flowing ones as well. Though if all needs to be done is the valve holes to be machined to fit the larger valves, I had rather just do that. People say just take my head to any shop to get it done, but I already know that I want someone who has worked on these engines before. If I have to, I will take my head down to Atlanta to get the job done right. Though I think that I have actually found a Z shop in town, so I am going to call them tomorrow, might drop by as well. Hope that these guys are good. That was really about it. I was wanting to put the cam kit in myself, but apparently don't have all the necessary tools to do so, so I am out of luck. As for the block, yes it is an L24. Not quiet sure what I want to do to it, though I don't think that I will touch it now. Might weight. Still not sure if I want to get a diesel crank, L28 crank, or get an L28 block. Might even just leave the block stock if the E31 w/ Cam does me good. Just looking for something fun on the streets and the back roads, but still livable for day to day. That is why I am not really looking at too much of an aggressive cam and might just end up with a Stage II cam w/ exhaust and stock carbs that me and a buddy are going to rebuild.

Half Exhuast
Yeah, that is what I figured. Would be too loud and stink up the cabin. Guess I will get full exhaust. Need to find some exhaust clips of the 3.2.1 and the 6.1 to see which I like better.
-
Half Exhuast
Ok, so I am thinking 3.2.1 exhaust. Not really sure if I should do 6.1 exhaust. Though this is my idea. Buy the manifold and then have a custom pipe made. What I was thinking was having the exhaust cut of shortly after the transmission and have it point downwards. Somewhere between the end of the exhaust and manifold put in a cherry bomb or something to help with noise. Or even a slim jim muffler. Now, my concern is would this be too loud? I want quiet when around town with maybe a little throaty noise, but when I get on it I want it to sound good and loud, but not Honda loud. Then my second concern is if I have the exhaust cut off after the transmission pointing downwardish, am I going to have to worry about catching the road on fire or anything? I wouldn't have the end at a 90 degree angle, maybe something more like 45 to 60 degrees so exhaust won't be blowing directly on the street.

HP gaining techniques?
Will an electric water pump and a performance harmonic damper really help anything with performance?

I'm back! Cam upgrade.
So, I am ordering some $3,000 to $4,000 worth of parts for my car here in the fallowing week. I am going to get a Cam kit. Stage II maybe Stage III. I have the E31 head. Going to get the cam put in myself with the help of a buddy hopefully. Though, I was wanting to put in the larger 260/280 Z valves. For these larger valves, where can I find them by themselves? I have not been able to do so. Also, how much of a bore needs to be done on the valve ports when I take it to the shop to get the ports machined?

Ethanol... why!?!
All that is true with E85. All the places that use ethanol, which is so far around 50% of the stations in the US, which by law will be 100% soon, only uses a 10% ethanol mix. 10% mix does nothing. In all of our vehicles, they all run just fine, get the same economy, ect. ect. In my truck, when I took it to emissions, the only difference from last year was the 10% ethanol mix, and my emissions were greatly reduced. The 10% ethanol mix also keeps a little more of my money inside the United States, and it does actually help to make fuel a couple cents cheaper. Not, E85 does reduce economy, but is offset with it being cheaper and that is why E85 has its own infrastructure so that current systems don't corrode away. But it does have advantages. It burns much cooler then regular gasoline, and has an octane rating of 105. Racing fuel is usually like a $1 more then regular and only provides 100 octane. Ethanol is like half the price, burns cooler, and gives you an extra 5 octane. We all know what racing fuel is used for, (you can get it at drag strips), so E85 is all the better Gives you higher octane for more boost, and burns cooler so keeps the engine and turbo's cooler, for even more boost! There are a few models that really take advantage of E85. There is one sports car that sees a 200hp increase from 91 octane to E85. Then there are a fewer smaller engines that see like a 40hp or 50hp increase. Even in N/A forum, you could see like a 20hp increase if the engine is ready/designed for it. The only real negative about ethanol is that it takes away from the food supply, but with the new technology that has been coming out, all that should change hopefully soon. A lot of racing leagues have been using ethanol for quiet some time because of its extreme benefits over regular gasoline, or even the racing gasoline.

Z Car Hell Uncovered
They need to make that kind of torture unlawful! :dead: This is what I hope to fix in the future though. I know that it may not be that profitable, but even if I am able to brake even, I want to open up a Datsun restore shop. Find a yard like this, take everything, and get all back to looking like new that I can. Now, what I don't get is why don't people take those cars to the scrap yard!? Instead of just having them sit in your yard for decades, might as well make some $$ off of it. With the prices are right now, you would be almost stupid not to! 2 cars, 1 day, I made $500. If I had done it two weeks earlier, I could have had $650.

Sneak peak of the 2009 370Z
Headlights are quiet different for sure. My first impression was "different, but not bad." They do look pretty decent, and I hope that they look better in person.

Sneak peak of the 2009 370Z
The 370z looks awesome. I have never been a fan of the 350z at all, and I know that the 370z changes are not very drastic, but it does it for me. Also, I like how the 370z is going back to the roots of the 240z. Tons of power (3.7L said to have near 350hp but at least more then the G37 at 330hp) some 200lbs lighter now weighing in just a hair over 3000lbs, and is shorter then the 350z but still has the same interior space. This is a Z car that I would love to own, and have only said that for the Z cars from the 70's and 80's. Been a long time, and I am happy for this Z. With how successful the GT-R is, and how all of their redesigns are turning out, the 370z is going to be freaking insane I think. Especially if they carry over a lot of the GT-R features. Handle awesome, and even though you only have say 340hp, you perform like you have at least another 100hp under the hood and offer this at a discount compared to the direct competition. It is sort of bad news good news though. The 370z base price is supposed to be up in the $30k, though there are rumors out right now that Nissan is in the makes of a new SX vehicle for the smaller, more efficient and cheaper coupe. I would think maybe a 170hp 250sx, and a 200hp 250sx. Then there could also be a 180sx 128hp or a 140hp 200sx unless Nissan is going to be revealing or bringing some new 4 bangers state side. Yes, don't worry as of yet. The rumors also include it to be RWD!

Nissan 370z
Please delete. Just noticed that one was already made. Will post my thoughts there.

Nissan 370z
We all know what we thing about the new GT-R Skyline. But what about the new 370z? What do you guys think of it? http://jalopnik.com/390264/2010-nissan-370z Will use the 3.7L V6, supposable making near 350hp, but at least more then the 330hp G37. Hope that they give it some decent torque numbers though near 300ft.lbs at least. Weight has lost some 200lbs, weighing in barely over 3000lbs! I like this new 370z a LOT. Seems like it is going to be a killer. Back to the old roots of less weight is better, but still has loads of power to back it up. Also shorter, which is a plus, but has the same interior space as the 350z which is another plus. I never cared that much for the 350z, but this 370z I like way better then the 350z and even the 90's 300zx. Price is supposed to be really pricey though well into the $30g's for one. The headlights are different, and look great in picture. Just hope that they look awesome in person as well, since this might be their new trademark headlight design for a while since the new Maxima as well is receiving the headlight.

L24 Stroker
Still though, L28 crank or LD28 crank? LD28 crank? LD28 crank.
-
L24 Stroker
I want to stay carb, and I have been thinking of picking up a local L28, and use that block with my current head. Just that I would need to drop more money into the motor for triple carbs, and I still need to finish restoring the rest of the beast which still needs a lot of work. Rebello quoted me 220bhp, which is actually the number that I have been looking for. The speed to weight ratio, a long with the 80' 5-speed and a LSD 3.9 or 4.11 is really my dream 240z. It is plenty of a power increase for me in this light of car. Though, I have been looking for a L28DET, and get that thing stock pushing crazy power, but I want to stay pre-ECU, pre-FI. Love the carbs too much to let them go. Got to work on my dream Datsun before I do anything else. I know that this is the route where you spend just as much as every one else, if not more, and get the least out of it, but this is what I want and have wanted since day 1. If I want more power, I will buy a 1984 Turbo 300zx and get that bad boy twin-turbocharged tuned for at least 400hp, with the capability of up to 500hp, or get a 1981-83 Turbocharged 280zx and have that pushing 300hp to 350hp. If I ever get a good job, I am wanting to add both of these to my Z collection.

I'm selling my Delorean!!!
Where does it say that she is selling the car for a house? Just that she is "moving and downsizing." Says nothing else, so I think that you did miss something, unless you know more then I do. Would have then kept it until the dollar gets a little stronger then as an investment. Though would depend on several other factors. Have you done anything to that baby? Ever get it to the 200hp that it was supposed to originally come in? Also, hasn't there been talk about a new DeLorean being released?
-
L24 Stroker
Well, I am making head way to get my L24 stroked. Now my question is, which would be the best route to go. Which has the more potential for power? The L28 crank vs. the LD28 (or is it the LB28) diesel crank. I would imagine the diesel crank route would be more expensive, but I would think that I would be able to get a heck of a lot more torque out of it.
-
I'm selling my Delorean!!!
Wow! How much did you pay for that, and how much investment do you have on it!? Looks like you are going to be making bank on it! I would have kept the DeLorean, the 280z, another one of those and loss the rest. Now, the Delorean is a car that would always grow in value. That is a car that I would hold onto until I am ready to buy a house or something, and use that has a huge down payment when the time come. Good luck with your move though. Same state and going far? Sucks you have to get ride of your babies. It does suck. I have a 240z S10 Blazer Bronco And I need to get ride of the Bronco, which I don't mind so much, but the Blazer has to go to which really sucks. What is even worse about it, is that I NEED a truck, and I need 4x4 system. I thought that these SUV's with the 4x4 would have been enough, but it isn't sadly so they got to go. They also have a fair share of their own issues anyways.

NEW Here
Cool! I got my 240z on the West Coast, but it is now here on the East Coast! A California born car is no in TN, ! When you go look at your cars, you can do a lot yourself for conditions and what not. Everything you need, you can get for these cars. Only thing that you got to watch out for is rust. Inspect from head to toe several times for rust, as this is the cars #1 enemy!

280z or 280zxt for reliable wife car...
I would get the ZXT. I agree with the statements listed above. The ZXT's seem to also be getting pretty rare, and seem to be going from a pretty penny online these days. So resale value could also be better if it is ever sold. If you do get the ZXT, first think that I would do is get an intercooler. Even if it isn't pushed often, I would get the intercooler to help keep the engine cool, last longer, and always allow you to boost the engine to peak psi when ever you drive it! Lower mileage also, which is awesome!

Rebello = West Coast, Who = East Coast?
Well, I have decided to stroke my L24. I just got off the phone with Rebello and quoted me $4,500 which I am willing to pay. Bumps power out to 220hp which is really all the power that I was looking forward too. It is pricey, for only 220hp, but that is what all I am wanting to do. Though, is there anyone on the East Coast for Datsun that is like Rebello? I really don't want to have to send my engine all the way over to California, and then have it shipped back. I will do it, but it would be much more convenient if I could just drive it somewhere here in the East Coast. I have called around to a few places, but I can't seem to get a hold of anyone, or find what I am looking for. Kudos to Rebello for them. Actually picking up the phone, and not taking me to a directory. Took me a fellow mechanic and not some secretary either!!! :classic:
