Moving to Atlanta
Sweet. Mind I ask what you are coming from and going to? Have any idea what part of the city you are wanting to move too? I have a buddy who lives just north of Atlanta and it is a very nice place. What all do you need to get done to your z car? I am hoping myself to get my Z out here in August. Need to put some $1500 to $2000 worth of work into it to make it road worthy/ready. I really want to get that thing out here. There are a lot of Z meetings that I would love to go to in Atlanta, and there are a lot of people on this forum that are around here that would be cool to meet up with and do a little driving.

300zx vs Corolla
Don't forget about that 2.3L ranger. My S10 2.8L V6 gets 24/25mpg. Rated for 125/150. Had a Silverado 1500 getting 14mpg, and that thing really hurt. Always $70 on a fill up and sometimes extremely close to $100. Z31 are hard to work on, and are extremely expensive to fix/mod. I would only get one if it was an 84-86, TT, and T-Tops. Intercooler that thing, mod the turbo, get a boost controller, rims, and I would be done with it. Have a sport setting for peak turbo efficiency at 15psi and I will be set.

daily driver
I think that I would just a nice modern daily driver like a Sentra or something. A Z car would be nice, but you already got on of those. You might loss your thrill about driving y our weekend car and just drive your daily car ALL the time instead. Might loss interest in the weekend car. Sentra would also be cheaper/easier to work on, way better fuel economy, passenger friendly, grocery shopping friendlier, possible cheaper insurance.

300zx vs Corolla
See that is soooo funny. I have never had ANY luck with Honda or Toyota. In all my cases and most of the family cases they always say "Buy Honda or Toyota", yet if you get into their Honda or Toyota, they are a broken POS. All the American cars that I got, and have had experiance with, nothing. Run forever and purr like a kitten. Plus American made vehicles have their own bad apples too. From each company there are definite buys and ones that you don't want to touch. Plus if it is used, you can't always blame the maker, you might need to blame the abuser. If you buy new these days, anyone is good to buy from. Even Hyundai and Suzuki, both companies which have come a LONG way in the past few years.

300zx vs Corolla
My girlfriends brothers Corolla is on its 3rd motor with just 140,000 miles on it. My sisters Corolla has 175,000 miles but since 140,000 you have to put a quart of oil in it a day or the engine will go out just like the Corolla that is on its 3rd motor. Mom's van (Sienna) blew that motor at 110,000 miles. Though, I would only get a Z31 if it had a turbo in it. The motor is super strong and super reliable. It is the same motor found in the 90's 300zx. Stock they handle much more power, and the turbo for the 84-86 can be modified a bit to take 15psi w/ an intercooler (peak efficiency) up from a stock and stock limited 6.8psi. Only the turbo one would be worth it because the cars are expensive to work on either repairing or to modify, plus they are a pain to work on. The engine bay is embarrassing to look at, and its a major pain to work in. What I would rather get is a 90's 300zx even if it is N/A rather than driving that Corolla around. N/A 90 versions can be found for the about the same price as the 80's 300zx.

R180 and 4 speed - Worth keeping/selling?
I would keep them. Use them for my ride if the something drastic ever happens to the new parts, you can spend a good day and get your rig running again with the older parts or You could always leave an eye open for a fairly decent condition Z that needs a tranny / diff or whatever, and see if you can make a return on selling it though I doubt that would ever happen.

wish to rebuild 240z!
5-Speed, and a r200 diff, brake upgrade are going to be mandatory. If you want SERIOUS numbers, do a V8 or RB motor swap. Other wise, L28 stoker is going to be extremely expensive with a turbo, or even triple carb. Emissions, you are going to be fine. Even with the new motor you will not have to go through emissions. Don't worry about the motor swap because they aren't even going to know about it. I myself have the L24 and want to stoke it to 2.7L, and triple carb it. The prices don't look pretty, but I am not looking for a monster beast in power, and just want to do this because no one else has really done it. Even if I only get a 50hp increase, I will be happy. 200hp in a 2300lbs car is a lot of power to be pushing.

anyone own a 300zx?
IF you got the money and time I would go for it. They are the most expensive to work on. There is no work space under the hood anywhere, plus the engine bay is just an embarrassment to look at. Though, they do have the same motor as the 90's 300zx. Stock can take a lot of punishment and power. The stock turbo pushes 6.8psi, and has a internal blow off valve that limits the turbo to 8psi. Though it can easily be by-passed and its peak efficiency is 15psi. All you need is a intercooler, and a few other minor mods to get them pumping some serious numbers. Though expect a lot of money, time, blood and a bunch of cursing. I myself was going to invest in a 80's 300zx but after doing a bunch of research, I am going to wait until I have like $20,000 to throw away. Use your money on a 240/280 and do a motor swap instead or something. btw, the 84-86 have the larger turbo, and the 87-89 have a smaller turbo. The smaller turbo spools much faster as it is a bit smaller, but can't push near the power as the older 300zx's.

Brake conversion kit, this all I need?
I am not sure what kind they are, but these are the rims that I got. They sound a bit like your description.

Brake conversion kit, this all I need?
So then something like this? http://autozone.com/R,APP989138/vehicleId,1698601/initialAction,partProductDetail/store,76/partType,00767/shopping/partProductDetail.htm and then pads like yours? So I am going to have to worry about this clearing and might have to tweak them a bit? The kit at the Z store, that though is just a bolt on with no modifying?
-
Brake conversion kit, this all I need?
How about this. I can't offered to do both at the same time, if I could I would, but what would be better to do first. Large 4 Piston Caliper kit in the front, or the rear disc conversion?
-
Rear spoiler
I remember that someone made a rear spoiler that goes at the top of the hatch. They were going to do some aerodynamic tests, and I was wondering if this thing was any good, and if you can find them anywhere or if they have to be homemade? It went right there and stuck out an inch or two.

Brake conversion kit, this all I need?
Hmm.... I will keep looking around. Though I am looking for something that offers everything and is simple to bolt on. I want the lest amount of hassle. Like forgetting about a part that might be needed, and having to mod to get the rear disc conversion on. I might go to a local track once or twice a year maybe, but it is going to be a street car. I have heard that cross-drilled / slotted brakes can burst, but only if you track the car. For me, I won't be doing that much anyways. But cross-drilled / slotted brakes aren't necessary for me either. They are nice for show, but with the kind of rims that I have, you won't even be able to see them. I know that I would like some Brembo rotors though. I have only heard good things from them. I wouldn't mind getting this kit and using these rotors at first, because I would most likely get something different once they wear out.

Brake conversion kit, this all I need?
I found this kit on ebay for $588 w/ shipping. It does also include rotors for the front. Or I could get it for $443 w/ shipping instead without the front rotors. Does this kit include everything that I would need for a rear disc brake conversion? I was looking at getting drums, but to do brakes all around, it would only cost me between $100 and $200 extra just to go with the conversion kit for the rear instead of going with new drums. # (2) BRAND NEW FRONT 70-77 240Z,260Z, OR 280Z NON VENTED CROSS DRILLED/SLOTTED BRAKE ROTORS( SO NOW YOU CAN HAVE FRONT ROTORS TO MATCHED YOUR REAR ROTORS) # (2) BRAND NEW 280ZX REAR CROSS DRILLED/SLOTTED BRAKE ROTORS # (2) BRAND NEW FRONT STAINLESS STEEL BRAIDED BRAKE LINES # (2) BRAND NEW REAR STAINLEES STEEL BRAIDED BRAKE LINES # (2) REAR 6061 T-6 ALUMINUM REAR CALIPER ADAPTOR BRACKETS(WAY LIGHTER THEN THE HEAVY RUSTED STEEL BRACKETS # (2) USED,CLEANED,CHECKED,(BEAD BLASTED) & PAINTED W/ VHT HI-TEMP CALIPER PAINT # (1) SET OF REAR SEMI METELLIC BRAKE PADS # (1) SET OF BOLTS/LOCKING WASHERS & PICTURED INSTRUCTIONS FOR A STRAIGH BOLT-ON INSTALL. # (2) CNC MODIFIED REAR EMERGENCY BRAKE BRACKETS(NOT SOME HOME DEPOT BENT STEEL HERE FOLKS) # QUICK & EASY HASSLE FREE INSTALL,NO NEED TO REMOVE THE WHOLE REAR AXLE HUB,JUST YOUR REAR BRAKE DRUM BACKING PLATE # THIS KIT ALLOW YOU TO RETAIN YOUR STOCK EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLE # PLEASE NOTE 77-78 Zs MUST USE THE 240Z EMERGENCY BRAKE CABLES # PLEASE INDICATE THE YEAR OF YOUR Z AT END OF AUCTION I am hopefully going to place an order for this in the next two weeks or so and start working on my Z again!

240z engine swaps
Yeah go there. Though myself, I would do an RB swap, V8 swap, or an L28ET swap. LT-1, LT-4, LS1, LS2, LS4 with transmissions can be found for $2k to $2.5k on ebay and are popular swaps. RB20DET, RB25DET, RB26DETT are all popular swaps too. The RB is the In-Line 6 version of the SR. SR will lighten the car up, but it doesn't past the wheel wells, so you have no weight on the front wheels which can cause a bit of under steering in high speed cornering. L28ET can push some decent numbers after being tweaked around with. Stock is only 180hp, but the turbo can handle some 15psi (up from around 6psi stock) so an intercooler would be needed. After getting the motor ready to handle that kind of psi, I am sure this thing can get close to 300hp. Even a Series II Supercharged 3.8L V6 would be pretty cool. All these will make the $6k budget easy for the motor, tranny, and accessories. Now if you get someone else to do it, it might be a different story. Though don't forget with this added power, you should get the disc brake conversion for the rear, as the drums can get pretty hot and over heat on the track.

stoker conversion
There is quiet a bit of those around. You might be able to find more information over at hybridz.org, but do some searching before you ask any questions because they like to snap at you if you ask a question that has already been covered. From what I hear, it improves torque quiet a bit. Though the 2.8L depending on stroke and if you do a bore can go from 3.0L to 3.2L safely. I love this video! http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2382048404444900926&q=240z+stroker&hl=en Sounds like a meaty V8. Two bad words in it. I know myself, I am going to stroke my L24 one of these days, which will take it to 2.7L.

Whats your fuel economy?
This motor is 36 years old with no technology in it compared to todays cars to help improve economy. .
-
Whats your fuel economy?
Wow, 28mpg to 30mpg is rather impressive I think. Thats just as good as current 2.4L InLine4s. I wonder what it would increase to if our 240z's had a 5-Speed instead.
-
Whats your fuel economy?
So what mpg to you get? Model, Year, any mods done? Going to get an idea of what I might get myself, as I am going to be taking my car on a 2,500 mile journey home next month I hope. After I do the brakes, suspension, tires, and a little more engine tweaking I hope to be off.
-
What performance do you get after upgrades?
I don't know from experience, but for a 240z, I would think an R200 diff for throttle response. A 5-Speed would help all the more too with the R200 diff.
-
What performance do you get after upgrades?
Its expensive to get a L24 cranking power. Some people say that a new ignition setup can run you anywhere between 15hp and 20hp for just a couple hundred dollars. Exhaust can be pricey and might give you a few HP. Most go 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inch diameter as anything bigger can/will decrease performance. A few hundred for an r200 diff. Will help improve acceleration. A 5 speed will also be a bit better because of the closer gear ratios with the additional gear. Triple carbs. Stroker motor (increase to 2.7L) If you really want to trick out the motor, all you can really do is the ignition setup and exhaust without getting into the thousands of dollars to get a few horses. Its pricey to pull even 200hp off with the L24. A R200 / 5-Speed can sometimes be found for pretty cheap. If you are wanting to get 200+ HP easy and for fairly cheap, you need to look for an L28 motor or you could just always go RB/VG or V8 even.. Myself, I am looking at a triple carb setup and stroke my L24. Looking at the prices, it sure isn't going to be cheap by any means. Looking at a price tag of a few thousand with anywhere between 200hp and 250hp pay off. I know that I could go L28 or V8, but I want something a little different and rarer to see anyone else with, while keeping my Z car as original as possible.

my version of twice pipes
Wow, those are some nice pipes. That would be a dual setup that I would love to have. What diameter pipes are those?

280z investment question
Like what kind of things need to be done? What kind of things do you want to do? The price can go from very little, not easily $10,000+. For me, in my 240z I have already put $250 into the motor. Now I am saving up $2,000 for new struts, springs, brakes, tires, ignition, and a few other small things. Then $2,000 for a brand new interior, how ever much a paint job is going to cost, $1,000+ for a sound system and a bunch of other little small things for the interior/exterior like louvers, air dams, spoiler, exhaust, ect. ect. Then after I get my car looking like it just came off the lot, I got more money to go into a stroker motor, rear disc mod, 5-speed, R200 diff mod, rims maybe, triple carbs and a few other mods. So for me, a LOT of money is going into this car. I probably won't get it done till I am near my 30's. But just to get it back to stock it is going to be pretty close to $5k - paint.

Should I buy?
As long as there is no major rust spots or cancer, then get it. Everything can be fixed on these cars. A dash cover is $100 Emblems are cheap Weather stripping can be cheap unless you go ahead and replace all of it Seat can be reupholstered for little also Though some pictures would be a little more help full. But I would check that car up and down like crazy for rust. When I got my Z car, I had my brother look that car up and down for rust, and he only found a little surface rust here and there. But once I purchased the car and started working on it, I found a bit more rust that needs taking care of before it gets any worse. Still not much rust was found, but this rust will eat the entire car if I don't get it fixed.

CONVERTABLE V6 TURBO 260Z (VG30DET) Datsun
That looks way better then I ever thought that it was going to. Looks very nice. Umm.... Though if that were mine, the only thing that I would have differently is the tail lights. I do not like those tail lights and would rather have the stock Z tail lights in place. The same hood but with louvers on both the left and right sides would look wicked imo. :devious:
