This motor is the easiest little thing to learn on. It is so simple because it doesn't have the additional 30+ years of technology thrown at it. I sorta feel like I need to ask this, so dont get mad, but do you know how a combustion engine works? Like even the one in your daily driver? The carbs though are tricky. I myself haven't learned how to tweak the carbs, but I have a buddy who is going to do that. Just reactions from people when I ask if they know how to do it, it is basically a your screwed and I am happy I never learned sorta look. They are supposed to be annoying, and tricky especially because they are dual carbs. You have to get both of them just right for the car to run great. First thing is first, get a Haynes Manual for your ride. It is going to help you a LOT, teach you a lot, and lets you do everything yourself. Then after that, replace all the hoses, filters, fluids. What sort of condition is the car in? Got any photos? If you are wanting power, it wont be that easy with carbs. All I can really think of is exhaust, but that is still minor. Most efficient route is triple carb it, or go electronic fuel ignition (EFI) and turbo the motor. You could even do either the efi or triple carb and get it stoked and bored. Depending on what you do you can go from the stock 2.8L all the way up to 3.2L.

I would just keep the money saving up. Then once you get enough for a turbo and 5-speed, then spend the money to make the car faster.

Wow, just make that thing your daily driver. Get rid of your other stuff before you get rid of that. That is a NICE car and those are hard to come by in that sort of condition. Even try a friends house or something. There might even be some members who would love to hold on to it for you and take care of that thing as if it was a baby.

Welcome!!! Yeah, get some photos of that baby and post them up! Also, what all do you got planned out for the restoration?

Nice RX7 there. Not much of a fan of the RX7. I have a buddy who has one, and I think that I don't care for them too much atm because of what my buddy is doing and how he is treating his car. Just curious, why a change of heart? I know that each one of my friends that has a sports car, each have something different that they have been eye balling for 3 + years before they got it and wouldn't give anything in the world for the car. What do you got planned so far? Leave the 240z all stock, engine swap, stocker or triple carb it? Good luck finding a Z with no rust. I thought that when I bought my Z car, that it was cancer rust free with just a few surface rust spots, but I ended up getting surprised a few times with 3 little spots of cancer rust.
  6. Bought my Z and it has a locking gas cap on it. Its nice and all, but it is still easy to steal my gas. The tank drain plug is like right there and would be an easier steal then a hose down the cap. Though my cap I don't care for it at all. It comes off easy, but I have to put like my full upper body weight on it just to get it back on.

I was 17 when I got my 240z. Almost have had it for a year now. 3rd owner. First car that I have ever bought! The truck I drive now my uncle gave to me when his kids bought their own cars.

Whats wrong with a 280zx 2+2. I forgot that it also has to be T-Tops. The 280zx 2+2 w/ T-Tops has always been my favoritist Z car. I have been looking at them for 3 or 4 years, and it has still been my favorite of them all. Plus why is weight mattering here? With 505hp, the car is still going to be lightning fast!!! Plus I already got my 240Z all planned out. Either a 280zx 2+2 T-Tops w/ LS7 or a Viper SRT10 as the midlife crisis car.

I know that this is more a question at hybridz, but I don't like that place and don't even want to do a search there. Anyways, I was thinking, there are a lot of Corvette's with middle aged men in them in their midlife crisis. I hope that I never become one of these guys. I have always wanted a 280zx 2+2, but I might meet the Corvette half way. I know that an LS2 can fit in a Z car, but I want more then just an LS2. I want 105hp and 70ft.lbs more torque then an LS2. I would want an LS7 dropped under the hood. Anyone know if the LS7 would fit? Its supposed to have a different block then the LS2, so I am not sure if it is going to be too big now. If it fits, I sure will be looking forward to my midlife crisis. :devious:
  10. Man, I sure could use all those accessories that he has there.

Awesome to hear! What kind of work are you going to do and what sort of degree do you have for this job if one is required? Mt brother works at some plant that produces parts for computers, like all the dirty work, and he has access to almost every tool imagineable. He actually sits and makes stuff after work with left over parts if he needs something which is pretty cool. He started as a nobody but is now friends with all the boss's so he can do a lot of stuff there at the shop now. JFYI, I might be calling you up in the future to make some special part for my Z!

Man, I am really considering buying this car off the guy. He is willing to do payments and I might be able to get it cheaper then $500. He really needs to get rid of these rids in a few days, so I might be able to get it at least half off. I am thinking about checking it out again to really see how well held the interior is and depending on that and any other rust issues I might take it off of him. At least get it running, and have it as a future turbo project car when I get my 240z finished. Plus I would get to have a nice weekend Z fix, and have the joys of reserecting a Z car. I haven't looked elsewhere, but just by looking at my Black Dragon Auto catalog, all I can say is expensive. $400 bumper, $40 grill, $400 front fender just to fix the burn hole, and at least another $140 to get it running for a fuel pump. So if that is all it needs to look in good condition and to run that would be a $980 price tag, then lets say at least $400 for the car, so a total of $1380 really to have a 1984 N/A Auto w/ 153k miles on it in good condition. What do you guys think? A go or no go? Also, if this is the price needed to get it nice, do you think that I would be able to turn around and sell it for near at least $2000? Might get to pull a profit out of it and use that $$ for the 240z. I am really debating here and just would like some input.

Never thought of doing it to the undercarrige. Might have to do that too. If it is only 4 ~ 5 lbs, this is the way that i am most likely going to go.
  14. Hell, you could even modify your Buick. If it already has the Series motor (3.8L V6) in it you are in better luck. Little needs to be done to the motor itself and you can strap on a supercharger. If you don't, you can find a Supercharged Series II/III (Series II is better still at 3.8L) motor for fairly cheap. Plus the trannies are awesome and extremely smooth for these motors. Stock you can be pushing some 240hp, if you use factory settings, though if you make your own settings you can easily get 300hp to 330hp out of the motor using an Eaton M90 supercharger. For some reason, I have always wanted a 4th Generation Buick Regal with the 3.8L motor in there Supercharged+intercooled pushing some 300+ HP. They are a lower profile car as no one thinks a granny car is going to be tricked out under the hood, they are extremely comfortable inside and don't look all that bad on the outside. Plus you also get one of the most reliable motors ever made.

Yeah, I was also thinking about building myself something like that. Take out the rear panel and throw in a hand made speaker box. Was also thinking about doing that for right behind the sets for some possible subs if I don't get a bazooka tube.
  16. Well what is wrong with just sticking with a 2+2? Why the need for a 2 seater coupe so badly? I think that if you got a faster motor in there (L28 Turbo, SR, RB, or a V8) and some tight suspension, it would be just as good if not better then a normal 2 seater Z. A 2+2 T-Top 280zx myself as always been my true favorite Z car. Thats a car that I want to get an L28 with a Turbo in there and start tricking out the motor. Its way more practical as I would love to have a daily driver Z that is also an awesome weekend car, and I could take it out on some short road trips to competitions and car shows with a buddy in the back seat. I ended up getting a 240z as it was cheap at the time, and nothing else was available. I am still in love with the car, but I hope to one day still get a 280zx 2+2 t-top. Plus you can always end up with 2 Z cars that way. Get the 2+2 now for the daily driver, then get a normal 2 seater later on. Its a win win situation. :-)

Wow that is awesome. Everything all stock or did you do anything to it? Just by the avatar, it looks like one sick z car.:devious:

This place is more dedicated to the 240, 260 and the 280s. This site is more dedicated to the 1984-1989 300zx. http://www.redz31.com/forum/index.php Just interested it what sorta condition it is in, mileage and asking price. I am just interested in the information, but not interested in purchasing. Right now I am just looking around at the 80's 300zx cars because I have recently been interested in them and might end up picking up one later. Why the reason to sell the project car?
  19. If you are wanting power on the cheaper side, most people go for the L28, V8, or an sr/rb motor as modifying the L24 to push sum numbers is on the expensive side. I myself was thinking of a V8, rb, or an L28, but I think that I am just going to stick with my L24. I am going to one day diesel crank it, and get a triple carb setup thrown on there. Its an expensive and harder way to go compared to other options with still even smaller power numbers, but for some reason this is the route that I am going to go. Maybe because it is one of the least popular mods and I don't want any normal modified Z car putting around on the streets. Unless you got some serious cash on you, I don't think that your car will be near done by summer. Though what it will be is drivable! I recently got my Z running. Already had a rebuild so I didn't have to bother with that. The interior is completely gutted and is going to stay that way for awhile because the price just to get the interior all together is way up there, a number that I don't like looking at. Though all I need are brakes, tires, and a new suspension and that car will be a safe and comfortable ride on the road. :-)

Yeah, I was thinking of some speakers for both sides in the hatch there. One were the original was, and other on the opposite side. Then I have this panel that came with the car. http://blackdragonauto.com/icatalog/z/0028.html That interior tail like panel there on the bottom left. With that, I was thinking that I might be able to get a speaker for each side there. So then I would have a total of 4 speakers in the rear. Then I was going to run a few wires up the center console, and have a small, low powered bass right behind the seats. Either a bazooka tube, or like two 10in subs in a box. I'm not planning on getting anything special, just some good cheap products that don't push too much power. Then if there was spots on the doors or on the dash, I would have put some speakers there, but apparently there are none.

Also, if anyone is interested, he has a Camaro Z28 IROC. I am not sure which year it is, so I am not sure which V8 it has, but I can find that out tomorrow. It either has the 5.0L or the 5.7L in there. It also has the 5-speed tranny with it. Asking price is $1100 for the car though can become $1000 if I can get more then one car sold. The car is in pretty bad condition, though I figured someone might be looking for a swap. Figured $1000 for the motor and tranny that runs already, and then a rebuild if you so choose would be a better deal then ebay. If any of you go to hybridz, let them know. I am trying to post up these three cars, as the motors might be wanted for swaps, but for some reason I cant post in the classifieds. Anyone know if there is a posting limit before they let you make threads in the classifieds?

There was only one speaker installed of the left side looking from behind the car through the hatch. The right side, there is an option to have one there. I just figured that the previous owner did something to it, as he tried doing work on it car, but never really finished anything. Figured it might have been a project that never got finished.

Well, I am checking out an audio system for my 240z. I am not going to get anything fancy, just some cheap speakers that will play my music. I already have a CD player that I am going to use in it, but am now checking out speakers. What I need to know is how many speakers came on the stock Z? When I was cleaning out the interior and taking everything apart, I noticed that in the rear hatch there were speakers set up, so that is 2 speakers for the rear. Now I have an interior panel kit, that on the very back of the hatch, the panel that covers up all the wires to the headlights, it looks like I can put two more speakers on that thing. Though looking up front, I did not see any place where a previous speaker was. Nothing on the dash nor the doors. So basically did the stock Z only come with those two speakers in the rear hatch or am I missing something?
  24. Hmmm..... I will have to plan on going there sometime this month and check it out!

He really didn't have much. He has a few old 60's mustangs that need a LOT of work. Here is the 1984 300zx n/a w/ 153k miles on it. I was hoping that it would have been in a little better condition as I would have gotten it. $500 for it, and he said that if I get more then 1, he will take $100 off each car, so this could go down to $400. He says all it needs is a battery and a fuel pump to run from what he knows. Here is the 1983 Porsche 928. He is asking $1600 but this can become $1500. All this needs is a battery to run from what he knows. On both cars, for the exterior all it looked like they needed was some care at a paint shop. Where all the money and time is going to go is in the interior.
