z's anyone?
So what sorta Z's you got there anyways? Man, if I saw going down the interstate, I would fallow the trucker till he takes a brake, and steal his rig when he goes into a Waffle House!

Heres my project *56k*
I am going to do a repaint, but not the original color. If the original color was anything other then that mustard yellow, I would have it painted the original color, but I really do not like that mustard yellow at all. I am thinking either black or a dark gray color. Its not going to be the daily driver, but it will be the weekend car and the special occasion weekday car. Because of it just being a weekend car, at first painting it was one of the last priorities, and for me to just freshen up the paint instead, but the paint is really in bad condition. Chipped in a few places, prime and the original color showing in spots, scratches everywhere, and the paint even runs in a few places. Because of this I have put getting a good paint job up near the top of the list.

Heres my project *56k*
Got the motor running and all dialed in, cleaned out the interior and made up a nice list of things to do for it. The project is mostly interior, exterior, brakes and suspension as of now. Then after that, I am going to get myself into some even bigger projects that will make the car go just all the more faster. All I have left to get for the motor is a K&N air filter, FlameThrower coil and ngk wires.

Rhino line interior
I was thinking about rhino lining the interior. There is a little surface rust in the interior that is a super easy fix, and the paint is poo. So I was thinking to cover that all up, and to prevent rust for hitting the interior again to just rhino line the thing if possible. Just the bottom surface, no sides or anything like that. I know that when I get a carpet kit in there, I wont see the interior metal, but just a state of mind knowing that underneath it is all pretty and clean, will really make me happy. Though I am not sure if rhino lining it would really way the car down or not. I dont mind shelling out the cash to do this, but I am not sure if it is going to add an extra 50lbs, 100lbs, 200lbs, ect. What are your guys thought on this? Getting my 240z rhino lined if possible.

Painting 240z costs
Well, before I do any performance parts, or get into the interior which is all gutted out, how much would a good paint job be? The paint that is on there now is a crap job and needs to be sanded off. There are a few rust spots that need some work too before the paint goes on. Plus I am thinking of pulling the motor and getting the engine bay all painted pretty. How much has it cost you guys to get a nice paint job on your Z cars? I am also thinking of racing strips, so would that cost extra? Also, I want to protect the under body and was wondering if there is some kind of sealer that can be spray on and how much that might cost. I need to figure out how much this is going to cost me so I can start saving and find someone out there in Cali who is a reliable and good painter.

Found this last night looking for parts
If you had read the article, it said the system was flushed and a brand new radiator put in. I would think not all new hoses, but a few new hoses. So that is coming through the old lines, thermostat and the heater core. I think that it is a good idea, and as long as you check it often if the filter is in place and watch your water temps, you should be good to go. Its just as reasonable to have one of these just like it is to have a fuel filter and an oil filter. You would think that because it is in a closed system it would be stupid, but having those $4 filters really helps prolong the life of the motor and really do clean a lot of stuff that you think that you would have never found. Why would a radiator filter be any different? I dont know. I just see it as a cool idea that has some benefits, even if you cant see it.

Hybrid and V8s
I dont like that site at all. Even though the question has been asked over and over again, here people greet you, while over there they automatically hate you and tell you to do your research. Then lock your threads. They come across very rued for the basic questions that I had, and for even more detailed questions that I had. I have asked over there about V8 mods, RB motors, and SR motors as if I ever swapped these would be of interest, though when asking these questions, I basically got stiffed in the face. I think that mostly because of this site, I had decided to not engine swap, and keep my L24 motor in there, but get some triple Webers. Even though with the same amount of money I could get an LS1 and tranny or something, and have 100+ more HP, I like the old school style route that I am going instead of the popular, what everyone is doing/getting way. I got the car because it is a classic, and I am going to keep it that way. :-)

Parts car
There could be a number of things wrong with it, cheap and expensive to fix. After getting the coil put in, which currently sounds like that is all you did, what noises do it make when you turned the key? Right now I am thinking no noise or power from anything, so the battery is dead. If all you did was a coil, it seems like your sorta had a short temper with it and didnt try other options. Describe to us what is happening, and it could be a super easy fix!!! Heck, I got my motor running, that hadnt run in at least 2 years. Official number still unknown. All I did was drop like $200 on a $625 car to get it running. Well, all I needed for it to run was a battery, but I also got hoses, belts, spark plugs, fluids and filters while I was at it. Last thing was dropping in the battery, turning the key and hearing it roar to life!!! Also, if your motor is just turning but wont start, it could be a fuel thing too. If it has been sitting, the fuel might need to work its ways through the fuel lines. I had this same problem. I had to stand there squirting fuel directly into a carb via the air intake to keep the motor running until the fuel had finally worked its way through the lines into the motor.

choke and smog question
Well in my 240z I was sorta supprised to see a choke. I totally wasnt expecting to see that. Though I have noticed, that there should be a leaver right next to it on the right. There is a slot for one, but no handle is there. I am wondering what is supposed to go there, and is it a big deal if it is or isnt there? Also the air/smog pump, can I just take that out completly and the few things that are attached to it? I am thinking a decimal point of better fuel economy, and maybe some more power, but I am not sure if it will hurt the motor or not and it seems to be a vital vaccum source too though I am not too sure about that one. Just that the smog pump was connected to a few pieces that was connected to everything else via hoses, so I am not sure if the smog pump plays a more vital roll then just being there for emissions.

Got the baby running!!!
Man, let it idle for a good 10 to 15 minutes and then took it for a spin. Man, I am going to love this car so much. I have no clue how long it has been sitting, I know of at least a year, but this thing purrs like a kitten. Spent two days replacing some stuff. Hoses, fluids, washers, bolts, battery, filters. Tried getting it to run, but there was no fuel in the fuel lines at all, so I had to keep the motor running by squirting fuel from a windex bottle into one of the carbs for like 10 minutes until the fuel finally made it through the lines. Then it was all golden from there. One carb, I think 1 through 3 is running rich, and the second carb seems to be a' ok from the looks of the spark plugs. I got a guy coming down sometime soon from the Sierra's who is an expert on carbs and used to own a Z of his own. Still got a bunch on work to do. After getting the battery put in, there is a bunch of eletrical work that needs to be done. Headlights, hazard switch, interior lights and the wipers. Brakes and Suspension have gone to poo. Only guage that doesnt work is the tach Still waiting to get my coil, ignitor, ngk plugs (only have 4 atm) and the ngk wires. I think that I might throw in a coolant resivor too. Going to take it to town sometime soon to get new tires, and get the rear hatch window thrown in. Might also see about getting the brakes done if the price is right just so that I dont have to mess with it.

Rev range? Is this right?
Well my tachometer redlines at 7k rpm. I think that this is some aftermarket tach. Isnt the redline of the L24 E31 motor 6k rpm with the powerband topping out at 5.6k rpm? I just want to make sure that it is a 6k rpm redline just so that I dont kill the motor thinking that I can take it up to 7k rpm.

E31 and E67
Well I have an E31 block and an E67 intake manifold. I always see people saying E block this and E that, so I am wondering if I got a good combo here or no. Mostly for possible future engine modifications mostly interested in the diesel crank.

Places in Santa Cruz
Is there a Z store or junk yard around here? I need like lot of stuff, but I dont have time to order what I need online. By the time the stuff gets here, I will be back in Tennessee. I know that there are a few of you who live around here that I can get help from if needed and tools too, but right now all I need to know is if any of you have a bunch-o of parts. Like I need a bunch of little stuff. All the big things need to wait for the interior because I need to get a vinyl interior kit, and I am going to do that before I put in my carpet kit and new seats put in. Almost have finished cleaning the car out, getting the hatch window out and pulling out the old carpet kit (nasty!!!). A little rust inside, but nothing that cant be fixed. Getting a huge list put together for parts. Tomorrow I think that I am going to be chucking in a battery and see how that goes. Hopefully the thing runs smoothly!

Road Trip!
Sweet that is awsome. I am wondering what sorta mpg my 240z is going to make. I think that I am going to do roughly a 3500 mile road trip in my Z either spring brake or in the summer. For fuel I am thinking that I will at least get 20mpg, but it would be nice if I get near what you are got. Save me a few $$. Risky, but sure one hell of an experiance and I know that I would have a great time. Edit: Just came to me that my Z is only a 4-Speed, and I am pretty sure that yours is a 5-Speed, so I am sure that my mpg wont even get that high. Well poo. One day I might throw in a 5-Speed from a 280 or something. Thats awsome doing 90 to 120 and getting 26mpg. I know that most motors (at least efi) get the best fuel ratio around 55mph to 65mph, so I wonder what you would have gotten around that speed.

Going to California
Wow, that would be pretty fun, but I am only going to be out there till the 14th. Some of you might be just a airs out of the way that I would be able to go. If I can get my Z running fairly fast, which I am sure of I might be able to travel longer distances then with using or going with my brother in his rigs. So far most of it is mostly local, I am thinking like a range of 150 miles or so tops so far. I will be sure to give some of you a ring while I am out there. btw brushie, I will get back to you in a few days on that one if I can come up with some funds for it! thanks again If any more of you are out in that area, be sure to let me know!!!

Going to California
WoOt! wOoT! On January 6th I am going to be headed to california to visit my 240z and work on here a bunch! Going to be out that way for 8 days or so. I am going to be in the Santa Cruz area. Anyone out this way? I wouldnt mind checking out some fellow members Z cars, take a few spins, maybe get some help on my Z if needed, and maybe if I can get my Z running while I am out there, take it for a spin with other Z cars. Strut around town in a Z gang or something. :devious: Let me know if you are out in that area and might possibly want to hook up if possible. With me having such a short time out there, me leaving my Z might also be immposible too so it may or may not happen. Though I would love if it does happen! Oh, if you own a Z store, know someone with a Z store, or just have a bunch of parts, let me know as I might be able to pick something up if needed.

L24 Stroker Conversion
There is an LD28 Diesel Crank that ups the literage from 2.4L to 2.7L. Supposed to increase torque quiet a bit. This is what I am currently looking into for my 240z car. Putting in a L20 crank I could see give it much higher revving capabilities, maybe a little more horsepower but not near as much torque. I dont know why, but I can also see the power dropping off very fast once you hit peak horsepower.

Carb question
I am still learning a lot about carbs, and am about to learn some more. I know for carbs, elevation matters depending on what elevation it was tuned on but I do not know when elevation starts to matter. I happen to live in a valley that is roughly at 600ft above sea level. I am surrounded by AWESOME driving, but it is all up in the mountains ranging from 1000ft to I would guess 2000ft above sea level. I would say that most of it is at 1600ft, but all of these are rough estimates. Now when I tune my carbs at 600ft, how much performance difference would I see going up 1000ft? I know that in my buddies Bronco and my brothers FJ cruiser, going from 600ft to above 4000ft does take a little more for the engine to start, and does loss a bit of power, yet still runs very nicely. That though is a 3000ft + difference. What elevation increase do you have to get to until you notice a difference in carb performance?

New guy with a gift
Holy hell. This is crazy. You could end up making a lot of money off of this. Restore what you can and sell on ebay or locally for some big bucks. Or you could just make your own zCar garage with a bunch of sweetness in it. All restored and perfect conditioned Z. :devious: You could be know as the Z guy in your area! I wish I were you.

Brushie1320022 Parts
I was looking for a Hatch window w/ defrost for my 71" Datsun as the old one was cracked and eventually just feel out. Gave Brushie a call about a window and received it just a few days in great condition with a great price. Thanks a lot and will be doing business with again in the near future.

Valve cover differences
Is there any advantage to getting one of those for a L24 block, or is that something mainly just for looks?

Diesel crank???
Man, some of this talk was a wee over my head. Basically, a lot of part searching and custom making. I will be looking forward to this once I get my Z restoration complete and saving a few thousand for this to happen. I recently found a guy 2 minutes from my house who has a Z junk yard and does everything mechanical on all Z cars. Been in business since 78' so once I get my Z out this way, I am going to have help from someone who knows what he is doing.
