  1. Thanks for the good words. I thought I may have messed up something or was going at it the wrong way. I will use some patience. Now that the bolt is loose, do I need to tighten it and then keep trying to turn it by over tightening? Should the belts be off?
  2. I used the ATF and let the motor sit with it poured over the crankshaft and in the cylinder holes. I got a large breaker bar and pulle dout the ol' 27mm socket and I thought I had finally gotten it to break free but I noticed that all I was doing was lossening the actual 27mm bolt. What am I doing wrong? I do not get this at all? I thought that by moving the 27mm bolt the pully would turn and I would see the pistons moving up and down on the engine. What am I doing wrong?
  3. I am very interested in the wheels you are selling. email me sphelanrep@comcast.net
  4. I am trying to wake the sleeping beast and I am following the directions in the same named thread about trying to coldstart an engine that has sat. I didn't use ATF fluid but I did use Mystery Oil and was told I should get the same results. I am ataching pictures of the engine w/o the cover to see if any one notices anything out of place. I can not get the pulley to budge. I will try it again this morning to see if any of that oil helped lossen up the motor. For clarification purposes, the 27mm bolt on the pulley that I am supposed to be trying to turn would be the bolt that lays directly behind the bottom of the fan blades and has a belt around it. Correct?:stupid: If anything looks out of the ordinary with these pics, or if you would like a more specific pic please let me know and I will post them.
  5. Thanks for the color links. I am guessing the car is 903 Universal blue. I love the color. After stripping down some of the interior I noticed the vinyl and seats were actually blue. They sprayed the vinyl black and the seats were covered over the original blue. I would love to see pics of what this orignially looked like. Blue on Blue seems pretty nice. I am going to post a link to a website once I get the pics of the car up and running. If I wanted to have the car repainted the original color would the shop have to do a colormatch or would they no how to mix the color based on the color code?

I finally have gotten my car home and in the garage. I am taking the day off to get it cleaned up and inspected to see what I am getting myself into. I have been looking for a VIN decoder but can not find one. I have seen the post that break down the numbers but I am looking for more info. Can you tell what paint code or where the car was originally sold or what upgrades or options were purchased at the original sale by the VIN? My paint code sticker is gone. Here is what I have on the door jamb and engine area: VIN: HLS30-29064 Stamped 4/71 Engine L24 037006 Also, I have been looking at several car pics and havent seen a 71' 240 with the chrome pinstripe down the side of the car. Do most people remove that? I'll post some pics later this afternoon.

What about old gas? I guess that shouldn't be mixed with any of the other fluids either. When I drain the tank, I'm sure there will be a lot of sludge and junk that comes out. Besides disposing of it at a garage or Auto store , any other precautions besides the more obvious flammable issues?

Thanks for the feedback. I think the only use I would get out of the compressor would be small use. I will not be painting. Would you say it is probably better to use a drill with a grinder/sander attachment for removing rust/paint or to use a small compressor or purchase a specific tool? I am not thinking large areas, I am talking about areas in the inner fenders or something like that.

I have a couple shop questions. First off, I know that you have to be really careful with the old fluids and they have to be properly disposed of. When draining the fluids, do you need to keep them seperate or can they all go into the same plastic container for disposal? What are some good containers or drain tubs to use and where do you dispose of the old fluids? 2nd Question. I don't own any airtools. Would getting a 2HP 6 gallon air compressor be a useful tool for working on cars or would it be underpowered and useless? For those of you who use air tools, what would be some good ones to have on hand besides an air wrench? I am still about 2 weeks away from picking up my car and right now I am trying to get the garage ready and buying misc tools. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Arne. I found someone locally selling used hoods and I am in desperate need of one.

Does anyone know if a '76 280Z Hood is a direct replacement for a '71 240? Any other body panels changeable?

    Thanks for all the feedback.
  13. I need to verify it, but I beleive the engine is from an 83 280ZX and it has a 5 speed transmission form the same year as well. I hope this isn't a bad thing. I am not doing this to completely restore, but to drive and enjoy.
  14. I have just purchased a 1971 240Z! I am so excited about the opportunity to get it up and running. I am already addicted to this website and I haven't even gotten the car home. I have attached a couple pics of the car in the condition it is in. As you can see this is going to take a lot of work. The car has been parked for 10-12 years, the owner had parked it a neighbors house and it has been totally forgotten. The neighbor and the PO want it gone, so I am going to load it up and see if I can perform a miracle. This is my first project and I have very little knowledge of what I am getting myself into, but I look forward to learning and experiencing everything that will come with it. I am in Nashville, TN and if there is anyone on here local that can give me any advice on local shops or would like to lend a hand please let me know. The "Awakening the Beast" is a great post and looks to be one of the best threads for getting started. If anyone knows of any other threads with this type of beginner info let me know. I have purchased the Haynes Manual and the highly regarded Restoring the Z from Amazon. I haven't had a chance to go through this car very well looking for rust or other problems but I plan on posting updates and pics as soon as I get the car home. Thanks in advance for all the great info on this site.

    Are there any knock-offs?
