  1. Yep, very solid tire tub on this one. I agree with the "good outweighing the bad". It looks like mostly cosmetic cleanup and refreshing for the most part until you get to the rear quarter area. I think I would forget the dogleg patch and get the Tabco outer wheelhousing and Tabco rear quarter repair panel and an outer rocker panel. That will take care of your major rust damage the easiest and most cost effective way. You could start searching for genuine Nissan replacement panels but it would be more time consuming and costly. I used the Tabco parts for the same rust damage. How is the other side? It does seem a little odd how the driver's rear quarter deterorated so badly but other areas look very solid. We can tell by the pic that it has had a previous rear quarter patch. Very nice project car overall at a good price. Good luck Dan and have fun with it!
  2. Perfect time to spruce up the garage ( not that I know if it needs it ). Epoxy floors, fresh painted walls with a few nicely framed Z pic/posters, fully stocked fridge...did I miss anything? Anything to make the old girl comfortable after the beauty treatment. I gotta tell ya, your Z is one of the best looking ones I've see on the way to the paint shop.
  3. Thanks for the refresher Carl. I recall discussing this car previously. Details were sketchy then but it was believed to be still in existance. It will make for an interesting story, no matter what the reason for it's resurfacing at this time. It's too easy for our imaginations to get away from us. I am left wondering if the owner just hasn't had the time or money to devote to the hobby until now, or being a knowledgable collector, has simply had it tucked away and has now decided to sell? No matter the present condition or history, it gives me a good feeling to see her listed among the alive & well. PS - It still isn't clear to me if L24-02085 is the original engine. That is the data plate I most would have liked to see.
  4. I would like to congratulate the owner on such a prestigeous find! It will be interesting to hear what is known about HLS30-00013. Such things as history of ownership, paper trail of maintenance, original documentation and the sharing of memories of past owners are likely high hopes, but maybe a few things I have wondered about can now be answered. Like, does it have L24 2027 installed or if not what is the engine number? What engine number is shown on the data plate? Is there any evidence of this car being used as a test mule by Nissan? I'm hoping, in good time we will see some pics and be further enlightened, when the new owner finds the time. In the meantime, I will continue to compose new words to the Huckleberry Hound tune - O My Darlin' to assist in my search for #9.
  5. Today I was bead blasting a pile of suspension pieces & small parts and came across these modified early steering knuckles. The smaller ball joints were used prior to serial number HLS30-7985 according to the bulletin TS-70-60. So, I figure these were modified early on in 1970, or else who ever did it would have used a later knuckle to match up with the corresponding ball joint with the larger ball stud diameter. Now to figure out what to do with them. Do you think they would be OK to use if they were machined to allow the use of the later ball joints? They sure seem to have been well done. Here's a few pics with them next to some later stock ones.

  9. When you're in the trenches doing the actual prep work and paying the cost of materials first hand, it's easier to understand how a quality paint job can cost what it does. You are lucky to have a knowledgable buddy help you through the process. Don't let the stress get to you and don't skimp on any of the prep work. Looking forward to seeing the finished paint.   10. No, the piston assemblies are different. I can't tell by looking at this what the stroke would be either. The best I can do for you is send some pics of the microfiche, so you can get a better look. I'll email it. Hopefully, someone reading this will have a good used MC. What do the LeMons rules state about donated used parts? How much time do you have to get the car ready?
  11. Jeff - The longer one from the 260z was used up to May '75. In the microfiche there is a NOTE (set substitution) which is: Assy-cylinder clutch master 30610-E4301 changed to 306-N4200 Assy-tube clutch master 30650-N4201 changed to 30650-N4200 This info is from the 12/79 revised microfiche but should help track down the rebuild kit, which is shown as 30611-N6025 Kit - Repair Clutch Master Cylinder If you want the exploded views let me know, I can take a few pics.
  12. Try putting the nut back on just far enough to be flush with the shaft, then give it a good wack with a brass hammer while someone else pulls up on the wheel. Or get a puller.
  13. Although there are 10 different part numbers for the 280zx tank, there is only one illustration depicting all of them. You would have to do some research to find out what the differences were. I managed to get a camera shot.

  15. Can you put up a pic of the tank in question? I will then be able to compare it to the illustrations in the microfiche which I'm unable to post here. There are 10 different part numbers shown up to the last revision I have (which is dated 12/84) for 280zx fuel tanks.

  18. I would give the plugs another read after a period of normal driving conditions at varied speeds. Here's more plug reading info. Outdated method perhaps, but still tells the story.
  19. Every car is a little different. Even with all things being equal such as year or model there can be still be quite a variation on what will fit or not, especially when trying to max out on tire/wheel combinations. I found out how easy it was to slightly manipulate the body side of the clearance equation without it being noticeable, when I was fitting my new outer wheel housings & quarters. I would rather err on the safe side when buying wheels & tires, especially when a miscalculation could be so costly. I came across this comparison calculator that could be usefull if it could be adapted to use with a "to scale" overlay that was representative of the dimensions of your car. The other day I was helping a friend diagnose his dimmer switch problem in his 240Z and inadvertantly activated the turn signal without realizing it. Love me Tender by Elvis started playing. First time I had ever seen one of those. He likes it, I find it annoying.   23. If the supercession took place after your parts catalog was published it will not be seen in your catalog. I will look it up in the microfiche to see what changes were made after June of '74 up to the microfiche date of issue. I know you are getting frustrated trying to source this weatherstrip, but I don't know if it is possible to find one identical to your original today or not.

  25. Today this thread was reborn and I noticed in post #37 your desire to get the high resolution pics of the abandoned Z. Sailor Bob originally posted 3 or 4 pics of that car. Where he got them from I don't know. He may have better resolution pics.
