I want to build a NA motor for my 73 240z...
WELCOME to the S30 family. I'm new too after being a 510 guy (and still am) for 13 years. First off, "...best NA motor to build." and "...on a budget..." are two terms that are not best friends ha. With a B18 or a K20 etc etc you may have more aftermarket options which means competitive prices and two less cylinders to buy parts for! My budget build was an L28 also. I found a very low mileage freshly rebuilt N42 short block that was being cast aside because the new Z owner wanted to drop in an LS1 or something along those lines. Anyhoo, I paid $150 and was on my way. I used my buddies N42 head with a quick rebuild. Cam is a mystery haha but from the idle I suspect it's got a little more overlap then stock. Used a beat up 6 into 1 header and spent several hours on my garage floor with a flat file carefully going over the flange mating surface. Used a factory Nissan gasket with a TINY bead or red Permatex. And new studs for intake and exhaust. The exhaust flange was slightly different height then the intake so I cut flat washers in half and glued them to the tops of the big Nissan washers (yokes?) where the studs sandwich the two so the nuts torqued the yokes evenly and square against both. You'll see. Intake is three 44PHH Mikunis's, a TWM mainifold with the linkage with rose joints (pillow ball) instead of plastic cups and balls. Good place to spend money here. Sure a rebuilt set of SU's would be rad too though. Comp oil pump, and Nissan Head gasket. Ignition is a junkyard Nissan black box distributor (no points) and an MSD 6AL. NGK's opened up to @ .050". That's it. Start up gave me chills. How can I build another four cylinder?! I go to Monterey Historics every year but this wail is up there with CSL's and the RSK's and the GTO's for me, seriously. All my neighbors came out of the wood work and the exhaust was hooked up! Single straight through Magna Flow under the floor exiting in front of the rear wheel. 18mpg here I come.

Haha, I'm TRYING! N42 bottom end I got looks to have next to no miles on it...rad dude I got it from got his Z to swap in something else, L28 turbo or V8...so I was happy to get the 2.8 that came with it off his hands. Rebuilt and .050 over but the head was gone so no compression numbers. So on went Dave's rebuilt head he had gone through at the same time as yours Eric, but Nissan of Thousand Oaks only gave him 8 head bolts. So I bought ARP studs and boy I was impressed. BUT as they only need to be hand tight into the block (where the clapping force is generated on top of the cylinder head at the beautiful ARP nuts) one stud did NOT like the threads in the block. And you only use a small allen key to drive each stud home. SO off came the head and grabbed a 10mm tap and pulled out a few some iron fillings and a small woodland creature. Love the feeling of cutting through corrosion to restore threads! Then the stud drove happily down with ARP moly lube. Cleaned both deck surfaces as best I could and hope they are true, no money to take the head apart and check. ARP only asked for 60lbs overall...as they don't strech at least not as much as OEM bolts do. I torqued them down in proper sequence to 30lbs first then to 60. Sound enough?! Most of my time has been spent cleaning and saving money! The steering looks done, delrin spacer had to be filed a few mils to bolt up, and the MSA urethane rack bushings needed persuasion to seat properly! That was a two beer job. 44mm Mikuni's need nothing as Dave surely coveted them as much as you do your set, so all I need to do is wait for the new fasteners for the timing cover to come from Z Car Garage (Go GA Z Rawb!) and engine in next weekend? j!

Hey E, aren't those rear 9.5's -19ET? Thought only the 9.0 wide castings came -13ET.... You rock, j!

Are these Panasports?
Early Panasport castings DID NOT say Panasport, and are just as good! There were subtle differences in the spoke and lip design. Run them with confidence! Danny Youngs of Fiveoneoh.net had a set for many years, and we grew to prefer the earlier Panasports to my later versions. My 2 cents, j!

street flares vs works/semi-wors flare widths?
If we cross reference R.S. Watanabe's website and the user submitted photos, it looks like ZG (or replica) size flair can easily house a 9.5" -19. So those are either wider, have a more negative offset, or a spacer. So my question is, how do we get 15" tires this wide anymore?...Not a fan of 16's or gasp, 17's on an S30 chassis! Thanks gain for hosting F1 again this weekend Eric!!!!:cheeky: j!

ZCarGarage Photos
I remember the cold night in 1999(?) that I met Rob on one of his first days to California. He promptly ushered me into the passenger seat of his turbocharged Datsun 510. We took a long back road in industrial San Jose to warm up the old L-Series, turned around, and with water injection armed and wastegate open to the atmosphere, I had my first pass in a 13 second Datsun. Rob is an amazing person, and I think my parents like him more than me. He is a busy guy, and says it like he sees it everytime, but he does everything right the first time. Have a great weekend everyone. j!:rambo:

Uh....Hello?!
Alright, probaly gonna be a little bit more of a "lurker" than a poster, cause if you don't have anything important to say... The fact of the matter is I feel a wee bit more knowledgable 'bout 510's and four cylinders, but I inherited my good pal Dave's 240Z to compliment my 350Z as he is leaving soon to finish school! I admire that so much, and this is a favor to him as much as it is to me, as he can now focus on his studies, and not let the Mikuni's distract him! I am a Digital Modeler, and have worked for Volvo's design studio in Camarillo, Nissan's in La Jolla, Volkswagen in Simi Valley, and now am staff @ Honda's R&D studio in Torrance. Thanks for having me! j!:rambo:
