  1. Pretty good suggestions here. I'd consider radiant floors for heat, especially in NJ. There are quite a few DIY websites that help design your system and sell everything you need. Its much, much safer than any open flame and you can zone it to where you need it. I also agree with designing the ceiling height with the type of lift you want to use.

Too low to be practical, but sure looks nice. Great job for sure! I like the wheels... aggressive!
  3. and Samantha lives on with donor parts on the 72... aka Rachel. Can't wait to see her.
  4. That should buff out... Don't understand why they totaled it! Glad to hear the Misses is OK. Someone ran a redlight?

Looks like my 379... same blue on blue. She's done. Strip usable parts and crush... sad
  6. Steve, thats probably one of the most complex part on the Z. I wish I had a suitable panel from a parts car to send you, but most Z's seem to have the same damage there. I'm surprised it was replaced already. Seems the PO or painter used body filler to repair rust. PO repairs not done right seem to make it worse in the long run. Remember the mess Samantha had with the drivers floor pan and doglegs? and my brother thinks she would make a good race car??? hahahaha she would break in half under race load! The only good part she had was the wheel well and drivers firewall...
  7. Dang! Didn't realize the rust went under the sill that much. It makes sense though since the hatch was badly leaking and had little to no gasket left. Eastwood makes reasonably priced brakes and rollers... should tell the Mrs that'd be a great Christmas idea. I loved getting tools for Christmas.... kinda miss those days! Keep up the good work Steve!

Looks like somebody wants to make a fast buck. Paint looks pretty amateur.

WOW!! Steve, your Z looks gorgeous! I really like the blacked out trim and door handles. What brand side mirrors? They look sharp. Good luck at ZCon!

  13. Looking good Steve! Can't wait to see her finished. Nice garage too, so CLEAN!!!

Very good point Arne. Datsun jumped around so much in parts that it would be very difficult to reproduce everything for the Z. I'm sure Nissan still holds copyrights on a lot of the parts which makes it even harder and more expensive to reproduce. Perhaps in another 20 years people will stop modding the Z and restore them to factory spec bringing the need for repro parts...

I really liked the "Monza sound" too! that's just a shame. Guess I'll hold on to my Monza system. Parts availability really is shocking for a car so important. I'm restoring a 60 Triumph TR3A and I could practically build a new TR3 with high quality reproduction parts. You could even buy an entire hand hammered TR3 body $$$$. such a shame for the 240z... Wiring harnesses would be an a great repro part for the 240z. Dang mice!!! If I had the resources..... i'd specialize in quality repro parts for the Z. I think I could make a living at that. hmmmmmm......

If the bottom threads are still good you may have luck with a back tap. Jegs.com has em Jegs 14mm Back Tap Its worth a shot before you start pulling the head to helicoil. IMO

I can't edit my first post. Would a moderator please fix the pictures in the first post so they don't appear side by side. When I view this thread all the pictures are in a vertical format so I assumed it would be the same for everyone... Sorry!

If Steve were to do it. It would be $8k or more in labor alone. add $2k for parts, materials and another $4-5k for paint. She needs an entire new interior and the original engine and trans needs to be rebuilt. I like the idea of owning a low VIN Z but I'd rather have a Z that wouldn't break the bank. In the end all I really want is a drivable Z. Anyone up to the challenge? taking offers... Sorry about the thread being difficult to read. Is there a way I can fix it?

Yes, the inner rocker on the drivers side is completely ruined by the PO running welding beads trying to close up a half inch gap... One thing not mentioned. The car was in a major hailstorm in Texas 3 days after the PO purchased her. The roof probably has a quarter inch or more of body filler as the PO had no idea how to fix it other than gallons of body filler...

I do in a box somewhere in my shed of parts. The engine number is on that plate? Same with transmission number? or it doesn't matter on the trans?

Nope no Scooby in my collection. Not a big fan of them to be honest. I'm leaning towards letting someone else restore her.... in the end I would need to invest well over $10k to bring her back from the dead. Its not worth it IMO. Is there a method to determine which motor came from what 240Z? I have 2 engines and transmissions sitting in my shed and I don't know which one is the original.

After years of storage I finally found the time and resources to restore my Z. Unfortunately, years of storage nearly took her life as she is stricken with car cancer. The original owner was in a bad accident and destroyed the right side inner fender and frame. Whoever did the repairs was an amateur and never straightened or replaced the frame rail as it's still bent down and makes the Z list to the right. Had she not been a low VIN car I would of parted her out and sent her to the crusher. http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r49/gwilhelm/240z/ I have more pics that I need to upload tonight that show the frame damage. Recognize the garage? Steve aka Madkaw can attest to the damage as he is the one doing the repairs.
