All apologies if you're a member...
I also laughed out loud. I had to read the thread to my wife at 6:30 this morning, because she wanted to know what was so funny! She said that my debilitating 'Z' disease must never include cars that look like those.....

Took my car in for alignment today and...
Is the noise you're hearing a metal-on-metal sort of noise? Does it get worse if you are in the middle of a turn? One easy thing to check is clearance between the drum and backing plate. One possible guess is that as things heat up, the drum expands and touches the backing plate. If it were me, I'd probably get the car up on jackstands, pull the rear wheel and rotate the drum to see where any contact might be taking place.

Dyeing Original Carpets?
I used RIT Dye on my luggage straps with excellent results. A pot of boiling water on the stovetop is all you need. Throw the straps in, stir things around and shazam. If you do this, just make sure that you rinse them very well. You don't want the dye coming off onto anything else. I have also used the RIT Dye for seat belts with good results (I put some 200SX retracting seat belts into a 510). The belts were tan, and I wanted them to be black. The RIT Dye took care of that....I have not heard that seat belts are not supposed to be dyed, as someone mentioned above, but in my case the belts that I was installing were so much better than the old belts that it was an improvement either way.

Anybody know if mylar windshield sunshades are available?
Unless I'm misunderstanding something, what Julio is looking for is the 'tint strip' that goes across the top of the windshield. I don't think that he's actually looking for a sun shade.

historic plates and restrictions
In North Carolina I think they've made the plates ugly on purpose, so that people will buy specialty plates (I did for both of my daily drivers). We are, however, allowed to use year of manufacture plates on cars of a certain vintage (including my Z). The only caveat is that you must be able to show your state-issued plate on demand (I keep mine under the passenger seat). The rules would almost certainly be different in Ohio. I would suggest checking with the Ohio DMV's web site for specific rules and regulations that might pertain to YOM plates.

Charleston, SC area members?
Come on up, Nate! There's nothing like driving a Z on some of these twisty mountain roads.....

Atlanta guy needs 240Z help
I don't know if that's strictly true. Doesn't Kurt Walters have a '70 automatic? I want to say the vin is in the HLS30-7XXX range.

Hello!
Steve, Hi, and welcome to the club! That's a really nice-looking Z. Can't wait to see some detail shots. Keep us posted as the restoration comes along! Brian PS. I think somebody planted a whole bunch of corn across the street from your house.......

Junkyard Z floormats
Very nice, David! I'd love to see the finished product!

What are these parts?
I pulled that smog gear off of my '71, with no ill effects. You will have to block up a couple of vacuum ports on the balance tube after you delete those two bits. I used some rubber caps, but I see that others have welded those closed or connected the two ports together with rubber tubing.

Replacement speakers for stock radio?
I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on some speakers that would work with a stock, original radio. When I bought my car from the PO, he had two plastic speaker boxes in the back, each of them with a blown and horrible-sounding speaker inside. I tossed the speakers and left the wiring in place. Now I'm at the point in my restoration where I was thinking that it might be nice to be able to listen to the radio (or perhaps even to music from my iPod, since I have a Griffin iTrip that will broadcast to FM). Does anyone have a recommendation on some speakers that would work well with a stock radio? It's my understanding that the original FM radio puts out about 3W of power, so I would assume that we're talking about ultra-low-powered speakers here....I probably won't even mount them behind the plastic panels, instead I was thinking that I'd create or buy some sort of a speaker box that would tuck up against each side in the rear cargo area.... Any advice would be appreciated.

this is beyond me.
Didn't someone say that this thread was stupid? Uh, that's just been confirmed. And so, another user gets added to the old 'ignore' list......

How do I change diff fluid when...
I changed the diff fluid in my 240 this morning, for the first time since I've owned the car. I got the rear end up in the air, and found two 'square head' plugs that a 17mm open-end handled (but didn't fit perfectly). Like John said, it's always a good idea to get the fill plug out before you try the drain plug....luckily, both of mine came right out, no problem. Was it common for owners to swap in plugs with the square end? I expected to find the recessed type plug and was very happily surprised when I found the square end plugs.

Dynamat. How much is enough?
It might be useful for you to cite some real information, in terms of what leads you to think so. Have you used both? Have you seen independent tests? I have used B-Quiet in my Z. I used Dynamat in my 510, and I can't really tell the difference. To me, it's like the difference between Crest and Ultrabrite toothpaste, you know what I mean? They both work, but one has a fancy box and the other one doesn't.

Will this diff fit?
That's the spirit! Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Will this diff fit?
According to the article that I referenced above, the dust shields on the halfshafts are different between the Z and the 510, and that screws up the fitment. I have never looked into this in detail on the Z, as I mentioned, but it's not difficult to see how this added complication might be the reason that the Subie R160 LSD swap is done commonly on 510's and not on Z cars. There are other LSD options for the Z. Have you looked into those?

Will this diff fit?
I knew I remembered seeing this recipe out there somewhere... http://kmhafer.datsun510.com/Subaru.htm

Will this diff fit?
I installed a Subaru R160 into my 510. The stock unit is a 3.7, not sure if that's the gearing that you're looking for. I have never explored the fitment in a Z, but it was a huge improvement to my 510.

Mpg....
Ehhhh...you might want to do some research on that. As I recall, Popular Mechanics tested the 'Aquatune' and found that it didn't work. David, were you able to get a quote on having your tank boiled out?

New Z Addict
The paint does look pretty good. Has it been recently painted? The right rear fender looks a little crusty.
