What would you do???
OK, I bought this 1971 240Z that was 900 miles away on pictures and PO remarks. I received paperwork about a previous restoration from 1987 and alot of service records and documentation. Of course I asked about rust and the PO said very minimal with mainly surface issues. Well, here's what I have found and was curious about what some of you guys would do. I chipped away whatever this stuff is on the inside, and then chipped away up underneath and took these photo's. Is this some sort of filler or fiberglass? The PO states he didn't know this was there because he never chipped away at it......Hmmmmm. Anyway, I want to keep the car but want to make sure this isn't unsafe. Would you guys go ahead and chip away all this stuff?? What the best course of action. Thanks, Randy

Question about storing
I have the perfect solution....just send your car to me and I'll drive it at least once a week. In Knoxville TN we usually stay around 30-38 degrees in the dead of winter, so it's always Z season here.........You guys need to move..........

Window glass help....
Xray and 280, You guys are great. I found the roller it was in the bottom of the door, it must have fallen off sometime ago. Thanks for the photo and pdf file, I got it back on and it cured about 85% of the rattle. I think getting the new felt will solve the rest. Whew, I'm glad this is finally is over my hands are killing me. Thanks again guys, this is a great Community.......... Randy

Window glass help....
Where is the barrel roller? I have been out here for about an hour working with this window. The whole glass unit is what is moving back and forth. If you can visualize the door lock knob, it's like the whole piece is moving. Any ideas??? Here's a picture if it helps. One is of the window at rest where it lays against the body of the door, and the other is me pushing the glass outward. Also if I roll the window all the way down it slips back behind the door and you have to pry it back outward so it will roll up. Does this make any sense? I consulted Haynes and Wick with so results. Thanks, Randy

I just got mine in yesterday from Les at Classic Datsun. He should have anything you need in Butterscotch. Here's my seats with just the foam, the vinyl should be here next week, and hopefully installed before Dec. Take care, Randy PS...Here's his link. http://www.classicdatsun.com/ PS..If you need plastic covers Les has those as well.

Caught this one on I40 South
Thanks Doug, It's funny, these cars keep finding me. I had to buy those foot pump car moving jacks and I can now get all four in the three car garage. Of course my wife isn't happy about leaving her car out in the cold. This 356 was just too good to pass up, and you wouldnt believe the documentation....Original bill of sale, service records all the back to 1963, Original title, etc, and all from the original owner who bought it off the showroom floor. Paul, If your ever in Knoxville stop by and trade some stories. Take care guys, Randy

Caught this one on I40 South
That is too funny, I was in the HOV lane going thru Atlanta and you were right beside me for awhile. I told my wife to grab the camera and snap a few before the traffic picked back up...What a small world. We were on our way to Macon to pick up a 1963 Porsche 356 from the original owner. I was the Suburban pulling the empty car carrier heading South. Hope your Trial went well. Regards, Randy PS. Here's the 356 I picked up....

Window glass help....
I just starting noticing that everytime I close my drivers side door the window glass rattles. It has gotten alot worse in the last few weeks. The glass is down by the way, since it's still pretty warm in TN. I was going to pull the door panel this week but wanted to know from the experts or those with more knowledge what I should be looking for. Thanks for any help. Randy

Caught this one on I40 South
As the traffic kept getting slower this yellow guy came right by our window so I took a few pictures. I guess there's a race somewhere. We were traveling to Macon GA, and this Z was just outside of Atlanta......

1971 240 Z - Driver's Seat
I'm glad you posted this question, I just finished recovering my 73's seat using the foam from Les and it was a piece of cake...( here's a picture of the seat before the final fit), but didn't realize the difference in the seat hardware for a 71 vs 73. I am waiting on covers to be in stock for my 71 Green and then I will start on those. Throw up some pictures when your done. PS...nice color on your Z, I have the same car only in Butterscotch interior. Regards, Randy

Alternator Help..please look at photo

Alternator Help..please look at photo
Hey guys, Earlier I posted about dim lights and motor hesistating. I started to begin removing the alternator and found a wire disconnected, and another "object" that I wasnt familiar with. Is this a ground wire from the alternator and if so would it being disconnected cause the alternator not to work? Also what is the other "object" that is attached to a wire, I checked my manual but didn't find anything. I hate to buy a new alternator if this might be the problem.....any thoughts. Thanks, Randy

Lights fading and engine hesitating
I'm no mechanic but tonight on the way home my lights started getting very dim and the car was hesitating, almost "missing" if that makes sense. By the time I got home I barely had enough headlight light to see 5 feet in front of me. I was thinking the alternator is bad, but I'm no mechanic. Also why would the car run so bad if the battery was failing..... Any thoughts?

Spongy Brakes...

Spongy Brakes...
I took the 71 out this evening to get a better feel for the car( I just got her two days ago) and just a few miles from home I applied the brakes and it was almost nothing....After changing my underwear I checked the fluid and the front reservoir was full but the back reservoir was empty. I know that I should have checked this prior since it is an unfamiliar car, but I didn't and earlier drives the brakes seemed a little soft, but worked fine. Anyway I filled up the reservoir but the brake pedal is still spongy. My question is if the reservoir went empty do the lines need to be bled? Would there be another reason for spongy brake pedal besides bleeding? Thanks in advance, Randy

My new...err, old 1971 240Z
Thanks for the heads up on interior and viny. The car came from Boston. I got it from the third owner who bought it "restored" from a gentleman in PA. I'll post some more as I start the disassembly and "refresher" Hopefully this will be one of the East coast cars that was always kept in the dry.

My new...err, old 1971 240Z
Hey Arne, Most vendors will start carrying them again mid to late October. I spoke with Z specialties and Black Dragon, both said Butterscotch was being added back to the lineup due to overwhelming request. Zak, he also signed the passenger side visor, so if I lose one I've got a back-up...

My new...err, old 1971 240Z
My new purchase arrived today via transport truck, a 1971 240Z in Green and Butterscotch.....MY FAVORITE COLOR for the 240Z. I have always been on the look out for this color and when this one came up on Ebay I couldn't help pressing that "buy it now" button. Here's a few pictures of how it looked after it was unloaded, I havent done anything to the car yet. This will be my "winter project" and keep me occupied when the time changes and it gets dark at 6:00 pm ( I hate the time change) so I'm sure I'll be posting some more questions later. (Yes, Mike I'll also make another $$$ donation..) Quick FYI on the car: It was "restored" in 1987 and I did get all the paper work and just about every receipt from the last 20 years, it's a lot of paper work. Rust is mainly surface, and not a whole lot, mainly where the paint is cracked. Some filler that I found, but again not too bad. Seems to run great, as I put about 30 miles on her today. New butterscotch seats will available in about 4 weeks, as well as the plastic, so that will help alot in the interior. All in all I'm very happy with the purchase. Z ya soon, Randy

Smokey MTN Zcar club show pictures
Mike, This is why I love this board, I had no idea... Also I noticed that the front of my hood had a small chip in it, and when you raise the hood all the way it does "bump" the front bumper guards.....now I know why, thanks for the heads up. Randy
