Header problem
ACK. SORRY. Transmission cross member. Sorry about that, very busy at work. As for motor mounts, I replaced the motor mounts and the transmission mount. Brett

Header problem
240zman -> Ok, so a later header DID solve the problem. That's good to know. The utterly frustrating part is I've tried TWO headers now. One from 2002ish and one from after the redesign. I'm going to go back to them AGAIN. This is going to be fun. I dealt with Abraham. Who did you speak with? xray -> Yup, I have a bend in the midpipe, and I lined it up identical to yours. Actually, I tried all 6 variations (pipe turned both ways, rotated all ways). No where close to fitting. Even more telling is that the ORIGINAL one piece exhaust that I had on the car back with the header I bought in 1997 didn't fit either. It ALSO hit the suspension cross member. So a known good exhaust failed as well. Brett

Header problem
Hmm, sorry. I haven't had the previous head on the car in many years, so I didn't remember off the top of my head which head it was. It's just been sitting on a shelf. Whatever was stock on a early 1977 280Z. I've actually read your post before... It's one of the reasons I bought the MSA premium exhaust package for the 6->1 header. Anyway, I went and compared the two heads last night and of course the dimensions are the same. On your car do you have new motor mounts and transmission mounts? Check out these pics that I am attaching... Thanks, Brett

Sorry, N47 head... not N42...

Header problem
Has anyone looked at what our cars might have in common? I ask this because I am having this problem right now. There has to be something to cause this that is common to our builds or cars because previously my car's setup was a stock L28 with N42 head and the MSA 6->1 header (round port). While I have changed many things (read most of) about the car, the things of import that have changed and could have affected dimensions are: the transmission mount is new, the motor mounts are new and I have an E31 head instead of the original N42. At this point I have tried not one but TWO 6->1 headers (square port). One was ceramic coated header from 2002ish and one was a ceramic coated from after the redesign. Both fit identically; which is to say both cause interference with the transmission mount. As well, I'm trying to bolt up the MSA Premium Exhaust for the 6->1 header. Now... Are the dimensions for port locations on an E31 head different from an N42? Has anyone changed their heads or have this head? Has anyone replaced their motor mounts and/or transmission mounts? I measured the motor mounts and they appear to be identical. However, I don't have my OLD transmission mount. Is it possible the replacement ones that we get now from MSA and Nissan are taller? If so this would change the angle of both the tranny (and by extension engine and all things attached to it)? I ask because I'd rather find and possibly fix the root cause of the problem than cut up a perfectly good exhaust and simply work around symptoms. Thanks guys... Brett

staggered 17" sport max wheels.
My recommendation is head over to HybridZ and go to the Groupbuy section. The have a group buy on 16x8, 17x8 and a few other sizes. As well, alot of people have tested and max rim width on a STOCK setup (no flares, no coilovers) is 8 inches at 0 offset. I'm sure you can get 9's under with flairs and spacers to push them out (but it's a +35 offset, so you would need something much bigger, around 50mm.) I'm not sure how ideal that is. Brett

Compression ratio
Try this site: http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/calcs/engine%20builder/index.html There are also other Z engine calculators out there. Just search on google. Obviously, it will be a tad higher because of the shaved head. Brett ps. And always search, all this stuff is in the archives here, at www.zcar.com and other locations.

Finally hit 65k, you?
When I took my '77 off the road in 2000 it had 225,000 miles. Pretty much everything on the car has been refreshed or replaced and will be hitting the road again soon. (yea, I know it took a while... I didn't really do ANY work from 2002 - 2007) Brett

Battery support frame needed
Give Z Barn a call. I've needed random metal parts from them in the past and Roger has been happy to cut them off the car for me and ship. You can just have him select a good condition battery support and then clean it up before welding it in the car. B

Few pix from the Z meet in Richmond, VA today. "Tribute to Eiji's car"
Awesome. Jon Felton is a very cool guy and he runs a great organization. I just hung out with him a few nights ago actually. As for the 510, very cool. Those are neat little cars, I'd like to have one someday. I'd like to check out ya'lls Z's sometime. Shoot me a PM if that's cool. B

BTW, how many active members does the club have? Are there many S30's or are we the minority. I used to roll with the Tidewater club a little back in the mid 90's and there was a pretty good turnout of first gens.

I've thought about it, but I don't have one on the road right now. I sold my stock DD and right now am finishing up a stroker car. I should though start hitting the meetings. Are you guys involved with NASA at all? B

17x7.5 rotas
Hey, What model rim is that from Rota? Are those the RB's? They have 17x17.5 and 8.5 now at +4 and have been thinking of giving them a go with a 7mm spacer that I can get for 5 bucks from Techno Toy Tuning (http://www.technotoytuning.com/productdetail.php?p=354). Can you take some fitment pictures around the fender wheels front and rear? Thanks! Brett

Vacuum Ports on SU Manifolds
Hey Gary, Thanks for the reply. I rebuilt the carbs several years back with a kit from ZTherapy. I could not remember for sure which needles they were (SM, GrossJet, whathaveyou) but I found a packet the other day that said Grose Jets on them. Interesting. I'll look into it. As for those holes, that is actually a picture of a new old stock manifold over at www.oem-surplus.com. I had originally thought that a PO had just messed with my intake, but apparently not. I'll look into it and post back. I imagine I'll just tap and plug them. Thanks! Brett

Vacuum Ports on SU Manifolds
Hey everyone, This is my first post on this board. Great posts on SU's and carbs in general. I didn't find anything on this, so if I am posting a question that has already been answered in the archives, I am sorry. I have a 3.1L build that presently has SU's with Grose-Jets on it. I will eventually go to triples or throttle bodies but for now, this is what I have. In anycase, check out the attachment. See how there are two vacuum ports, one blue and one green? The next two? I am curious as to what they were for? Any recommendation on how to plug them? Are the NPT or some BPT? If not, I imagine I'll need to just drill and tap the holes and then plug them? Thanks, Brett '77 280Z
