  1. I have a maintenance free battery in my car that measures 8 ½ “(H) x 6 ½” (W) x 10” (L). It fits in the frame just right. As for trying to locate the most authentic looking battery, all the ones I’ve seen that are vintage looking reproductions have ‘DELCO’ or ‘FOMOCO’ written on the side. A suggestion is to use a modern battery with the proper dimensions and cover it with the old Nissan OEM plastic battery cover of that era.

    I reinforced the choke mounting area with sheet metal and applied two-part epoxy putty around the holes where it attaches with the screws.
  3. Page 8 of my Black Dragon catalog shows you car as being a 1973 model (12001-172732), based on your VIN. That said, I would venture to say your carbs have been swapped.

    Welcome! I have very fond memories of Logan. I met my future wife while we were both stationed at Hill AFB. We would dive up to Logan often and spend time at the park there by the stream and feed the ducks and geese. I recall that was the place where I decided she was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. 19 years later, I am still with her. Again, welcome to the club and I hope you enjoy many years with your Z.
  5. Have you tried Courtesy Nissan? I was able to purchase a complete NOS exhaust system (manifold to rear muffler) a couple of years ago. I seem to recall he also was selling the complete assemblies as well.

  8. On page 181 (1990 Edition) of Wick Humble’s book, How to Restore Your Datsun Z-Car, it shows the author using a nylon braided sleeve on the brake vacuum lines. In fact, the photo shows the braided sleeve going around a 90 degree bend of hose. The FLEXO PET type of braided cover comes in up to 3 inched in diameter and can withstand temperatures up 257 degrees Fahrenheit, which should be sufficient for a radiator hose application. https://www.wirecare.com/wirecarephp1/wc_product_list.php?prod=PTN&prodline=ES
  9. I am still running the original braided hoses (and numbered spark plug wires) on my car as well. Some of my hoses were starting to turn gray and fray at the ends, so I decided to fix it. The best technique I have found so far to restore them is to do the following: 1. Wash with mild dishwashing liquid and hot water 2. Let dry for at least 24 hours 3. If the hose ends fabric is frayed, use clear Shoe Goo (this stuff is the bomb!) on the end to keep the fabric in place 4. Apply a couple coats of black Plasti Dip in the aerosol can to the hose and let dry Here is the result: Now the dilemma is my hoses now look restored, but can they be trusted on a long road trip?     As you have figured out, the Datsun VINs of this period really doesn’t yield as much information as the current 17 digit VIN numbers of today. The best advice I could give you as to the original color of your car is to look in a location that would most likely be missed by a painter’s spray gun. The spare tire well inside of the car or the inside of the seat frame rails comes to mind. As for the chrome pin striping, that was not a factory option, and could have been easily applied by a dealer or previous owner.

    Back in the early '90s I was a member of ZCCC. Back then, we were lucky to get a handful of Z cars together for an event. I took this picture back around 1992 (my car is the green one), when the club got together for a roadtrip. I think we went to Este Park that day. I wonder if any members from those days are still active in the club.

  24. The paint look good from I can see. I have to admit this part of a restoration process is the most satisfying and yet the scariest for me. The fun part is putting the bumpers, trim etc… back on a newly painted car knowing that you are nearing completion. The worrisome aspect is hoping you don’t ding or scratch anything in the process. Take your time and cherish this phase of your car’s renaissance.
