  1. You should be able to use your stock harness, but you will need to by pass the inhibitor switch. It keeps the car from starting when you are not in Park or Neutral. You'll need to find the rlay for that and bypass it. Jim

You know, I really don't see it being a sensor. The only one really effected by time/ temperature is the head temp. We need to know what's going on when it dies. Try the spark plug test for spark. see if you can get a noid light ( I believe that advance auto sells them for about $12) and test for injectors firing. A fuel pressure gauge will help make sure the pump, regulator and filters are all OK. Those three tests will really help to narrow down the possible causes. I'll still guess it's spark, but that's just a guess. To bad you weren't closer to Tampa, I have both types of factory EFI analyzers. Jim

So far everyone has you looking at fuel. maybe it's on the spark side. i've seen Nissan distributers cut out when they get hot (roughly 15-20 minutes after start up0 die, then run again after they cool off. Try this, get an extra spark plug, new or used, and next time the car dies pull a plug wire, plug it to the extra plug and ground it by the strut bolts. Try cranking the car and see if you are getting spark. At worst this will eliminate the dizzy as the culprit. Speaking of plugs, have you checked them to see if the car is running rich when it dies? To much fuel will kill the car, but it will usually smoke black smoke first. Jim
  4. Carl, I don't think that you are being critical, you have very good points. Maybe it should be suggested to the ZCCA to have the car show awards at the end of the show, or at least that night. I believe the owners of many of the better Z's in the show know who the judges are, and probably do talk to them afterwards. Unfortunately there still are only a very few Zs that are really excellent examples to be judged (at least at the convention, I know that there are many more examples that the ZCCA needs to draw to the convention). I could see posting the rejudged cars, as they are the best of the field. Some of the other cars really get picked apart, and I doubt the owners would like to see that posted for all to see. There is room fro the ZCCA to really elevate the national show. I'll forward these ideas, and any others that anyone would like to suggest, to Paul, the ZCCA and the Ohio gang. One thing I would like to point out, this years car show had 88 cars, I believe the most ever was just over 100 which is the cap. But when you add in the people's choice, we had almost 200. That is far more than the other conventions that I attened (Georgia, San Antonio, and Dallas). I think that people's choice is a great idea to expand the show to let in those who don't want to be nit picked judged, but still be in the show. Jim
  5. Carl, If it was only that easy. Unfortunately there was no photocopy machine at our disposal at the track. I guess that that could have been done at the hotel at some point, but then we would need to find each person to hand them out. secondly, and more impotantly, you don't want to give out scoring sheets before the closing banquet, or while judges are still around. People will share and compare scores which will lead to everyone knowing the results before the banquet. The other problem is the judges. If they get bombarded, and running Z Fest trust me they will, it will be hard to get volunteers for future conventions. I do agree that they should be able to get them out sooner, but I think that late year date probably messed that up with the holidays being so soon after the convention. Jim
  6. I would check the fuel pressure regulator. When they go bad, they usually go very rich due to to high of pressure. With the cars age, these are starting to go bad more frequently. To bad I'm not headed to Knoxville this Christmas, I drive right by there on my way from Tampa. I even have a factory EFI analyzer. Jim

First I would try to figure out if it is fuel or spark related. What kind of plugs are you running? If they aren't NGK, replace them. NGK 5632 is a good common plug for L6s with electronic ignition. Check the cap and rotor. I've worked on a car with a rotor with the back side broken off. it through it out of balance and ran like crap. Make sure to have a good cap and rotor. make sure that your wires are in good condition. If that hasn't fixed the problem, move to fuel. popping out the AFM is a lean condition. That is usually a vaccum leak. With the car running pull the oil cap. The car should die, or at least run very very bad. remember, the entire motor is part of the "vacuum" system. Try pulling the dipstick with the car running. If it doesn't change you have a leak somewhere. Keep us in the loop, Jim

Guys, Check out this link. Who will get vin 0001? Jim http://www.specialolympicsflorida.org/community/support/fundraising-events-and-promotions.html#NISMO
  9. Gus, I believe that Chris meant to point out there are no "stock" 350Zs in the show. Daily driver requires you to have at least 75k on the odometer. I have a funny feeling that your 350 isn't stock Of couse, with no other cars in the class, even with all the deductions for not being stock, you would still win! Jim
  10. Bob, All of the judged cars will be inside the busch garages. There may be a couple just outside the garage that had to be moved to a different class, so make sure you are in the right class!!!!! The rest of the outside cars are people's choice. Jim
  11. Art, I'm about 10 minutes from Jimbos. I'll be leaving early Saturday to head over to Daytona. Are you flying into Tampa? Jim
  12. Art, How is the oil in the carbs? If one (i would guess the front) has more oil in it (or a different kind) it will respond slower, thus leaning out the front carb. lift both pistons by hand al the way to the top. do they feel about the same? Let them drop from the top, they should clunck at the same time. You could also have the alingment of the domes off. I always move the piston up and down while tightening the screws on the domes, seems to work. By the way, are you coming to Daytona? I still owe you a ride in the 260! Jim
  13. Just a friendly reminder that the convention rates for Daytona this year go up on August 1st. Our waiting list for the lapping event is getting shorter, so get your name on the list now! Keep checking the website for other updates. www.flza.com Jim

Vicky, Can you bring Zrush to the August event over at Jimbo's house? I have the factory EFI analyzer for Nissan fuel injection. I also have an innovate wideband that will tell us exactly what your car is doing. I'm sure we can get you on the road with pump gas. Jim

Two things to look at. Is the battery charged? EFI needs a certain amount of volts to run. Second, try disconnecting the oil pressure switch. With low oil pressure the switch turns off the fuel pump. Disconnecting it will bypass this and keep the fuel pump on. Of course your oil pressure gauge won't work ( a good idea to check the oil before doing this!) Jim

Vicky, You could have a 2mm headgasket put in. That will lower the compression some but you won't need to other parts. Basically the car would look exaxctly the same. You really need to have Rick and I hook up some stuff to it and see where the car is. I always thought the car ran a little lean. By the way, it was great to see you this weekend! I never did get over to check out your new car. Jim P

Hey guys, Posted this in the events section. I just wanted to make sure everyone sees it and get the chance to come out. The show is at Autoway Nissan of Clearwater. There will be food, music, and a great time. I hope all the Florida people, and everyone else, can make it out. Jim more info at www.flza.com

Hey Guys, As most of you know the Florida Z Clubs are hosting the National Convention this year in Daytona. We have a local Nissan dealer who wants to start off the celebration early this year. We have set up a page to register for this show at http://flza.com/autoway.htm We will have many of the people from this years convention there to answer any questions you may have, or to sign you up. Hope to see everyone there, Jim

When you say you changed the "water temp sensor" do you mean the one wire sensor or the two wire sensor that uses a fuel injector plug? The one wire is for the gauge only, not the EFI. Try removing the head temp sensor (with the fuel injector style plug in.) The engine should go rich. If you have no change, then the head temp is bad. Nissan part number 22630-N4200. I seriously doubt the AFM is bad, it's just is a bandaid to try to compensate for another problem. Jim

Find a good turbo motor, exhaust manifold, turbo, injectors and AFM, and swap that right into your car. I suggest the 82-83 5 speed for a turbo swap. It has a log first gear and a good overdrive. Non turbo Zs can use the Maxima tranny, it has a short first gear and a slightly better overdrive. Jim

I can't see how it could. There are two wires (I believe red and green) in a box on the fender well by the coil. These go to the ignition module. I belive that the red and black wires off the MSD hook up to these, the the black and orange to the coil. It's been a while, so don't quote me on that. Jim
  22. turbo 260 replied to TBK1's post in a topic in Fuel Injection
How do you have it hooked up? I still run my ignition box on the 79 standalone variety. I would think that you would have to use it somehow or the distributer just wouldn't work. If it's not hooked up ay way to the ignition module, and the tach is jumping around, then there must be a problem with the MSD. Could be the tach adapter. Jim

The FPR can also get stuck and keep your psi to high. Bought a 77 with this problem, the local shop it was at sold the guy a new AFM, head temp and a bunch of other parts for about $700. We bought it for $250 and fixed it with an old FPR in about an hour. You can check it by pinching the return line off the fuel rail. If there is no change, try pinching the supply line. If the FPR is bad, it should start to clear up then die. Jim
  24. turbo 260 replied to TBK1's post in a topic in Fuel Injection
I would check the EFI relay under the dash. It always went out on my 77. It would run for a while, then just cut out. The tach jumping may mean you need a new ignition module, located on the fire wall under the dash on the passenger side. Jim
  25. hey guys, I have been following this thread for a while now, and thoght I would chime in. My name is Jim Peters, and as Chris said, I'm in charge of the car show. Now before everyone starts in on me, let me explain what it is that I am doing. I'm in charge of organizing the event, setting up the show, helping with judging, and setting up the people's choice. I can't change anything in the ZCCA rules, they are set and probably won't change any before this convention. I think that there has been a lot of great ideas in this thread that need to be proposed to the ZCCA. I think that it would be great for a few of the members of this forum to would get together and make a proposal for consideration at the ZCCA meetings during this years convention. What I can change is the people's choice. Well not so much change, but there is really no guidelines set by ZCCA yet. We are collecting information when you register as to the class you would be in if judged, but we are doing that to get an idea of the cars entered. Any suggestions that anyone here has would be greatly appreciated! I've helped Chris on the last 3 local Z Fests and realize you can't please eveyone, but I would like to get eveyone's imput before the show. Jim
