Big difference. Those are "drive-by-wire" systems. Don't confuse "electronic power steering" with "electric steering assist". This setup has been used for almost a decade on modern vehicles, and they're as reliable as any other automotive electric component (think power windows). We just got home from a 200-mile cruise with our local Z group. Had a great time testing the system in some pretty challenging conditions (high-speed canyon-carving through 10-mph posted mountain switchbacks at nearly 4x the posted limit). I can say that for really tight situations, the electric assist made the drive a lot more fun (and a lot less tiring). As Hardway mentioned, it takes a mile or two to get the "feel" for it, and after that, you won't want to turn it off (except maybe for long freeway stretches).

Not only is it feasilble, it's simple and affordable - Those of you wanting to upgrade your 240Z / 260Z / 280Z to power steering will want to check this out: Z Power Steering - Power steering systems for Datsun 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z
  3. You guys think finding the center caps for the Appliance mesh wheels is a challenge, try finding a set of caps for the Appliance wire wheels!
  4. uShip. Kind of an auction site for shippers - I have used them 3x and saved about 50% off the lowest rate of whoever else I called.

Well, I went with the blue from the Honda Odyssey, and LOVE it. It's perfect for the Z, and accentuates the shape SO well.
  6. Wow, I missed the boat on this one. I have 2 sets of butterscotch panels available... One set nicer than the other. Interested parties, please email (greg@nicoclub.com) or PM, I'll get some pics this coming week.
  7. Bump - Hope some of you can make it. Please help pass the word onto some other forums?

Hey Bruce - What part of the Valley are you in? I'd love to meet up and have you have a look at my 72 project, or just grab lunch and talk shop.

I've been looking for some 16", zero-offset wheels for the Z... Ran across a deal I can't quite pass up on the following: SSR Professors, 17x8.5, +35 offset. Has anyone fitted a set of these to their Z? Understanding I'll likely need spacers, am I wasting my time regardless? Thanks guys!

So a 240sx trans can be used on an L24 in a 72, as long as I swap the bellhousings?
  11. Thanks E. I have the butterscotch panels coming off the car, they have no speaker holes but have some damage at the top edge. I bought a pair of nice black panels from a guy on ebay (and a bunch of other stuff for my interior). Enigma, I LOVE those wheels. I wish I could find a set of those 5-slots in 16x8, 0-offset.
  12. ...this past Saturday. 72 Z, AZ car, good floorboards (woohoo), some light rust on doglegs, no perforation, battery tray corroded badly... Original metallic brown paint (shot) with butterscotch interior (mediocre condition). I started by pulling out all the carpet and sound deadening, and cleaning all the built-up debris and dirt out of the interior. It's remarkably well-preserved, and thankfully it's complete and stock. Put a battery on it just for fun, and all the electric components worked - even the radio, haha. She fired right up with some starting fluid, so for now I'll be dealing with cosmetics. The next couple weeks will be spent pulling all the rubber and trim and prepping the body for paint. I'll be switching interior colors to black, and exterior to a color I've been wanting for a LONG time... don't laugh... It's an icy metallic blue I saw on a 2007 Honda Odyssey. Should go nice with black interior and vintage black "Datsun" vinyl stripe. Aw, I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm in love with this car already.:classic: Here's an 8-part series of articles I did on the car I just completed, and I intend to do a similar walkthrough with the Z (and then my 2 Roadsters, and then a '64 Bluebird, and then.... ) Hope you guys like it: http://www.nicoclub.com/articles/vert-proj/vert-part1.shtml

Looks awesome in black... MikeW, any chance I could see some more pics of yours? That's the color I think I'm going with. I'm not a big fan of Bayside Blue, or any of the real vibrant metallics for an older car. I like a more muted color, especially since the early metallic paints were a bit toned-down. I'm thinking I'll go with a light icy blue metallic, with black interior and the optional "Datsun" side stripes in black.... With some Panasports or Wats.

That's great to hear. It's currently Butterscotch, but I'm switching to black.

Hi guys! Just starting my restoration of a 72, and I'm a little confused as to the carpet / vinyl configuration. My car appears to have the quilted vinyl cover over the trans tunnel, and individual floor "mats" (carpet), one in each footwell / floor pan. Is this accurate? The great news is I pulled the "carpet" and insulation up and the floors are in great shape. AZ car, bought at West Valley in 1971 and has never left the state.
