  1. the problem i kept having was when i installed the oil pump even though the shaft was pointing at 11:25 just like the picture on the stroker website. the rotor on the distributor was pointing at 6 instead of 1 and the motor would detonate. so i made 6 number 1 and moved all the spark plug wires back 1 position on the cap and guesed where the distributor would have to sit for it to start and it fired right up.. hasnt run in 6 months. but i still dont know what i did wrong. if anyone wants to give me a little insight that would be great. thanks.
  2. thanks Carl and the rest of you guys for the help. i got the timing all fixed. i just need a new motor .
  3. Iam judging the #1 sparkplug to be located when i have the motor at tdc on the compression stroke with the distributor installed and puting the cap on and lining up the rotor in relation to where the #1 sparkplug wire is positioned when the cap is on. the line through the off-set is 11 O'clock to 5 O'clock. when looking down the hole at the off-set the side that is bigger is pointing at the firewall. i still dont know what it is that Iam doing wrong.
  4. everything is put together as the FSM has indicated; however when i put the oil pump back together i used the picture i got off the stroker website which indicates that the distribitor drive gear be instaled at 11:25 with the fat side pointing to the right. i did exactly that and now the rotor is not pointing at the #1 spark plugit is pointing down like at #6 and it wont start. how do i get it to line up so the rotor points at #1 spark plug? everything is set exactly as the FSM said but i still dont have it right. any help would be greatly apreciated . thanks
  5. now that i have it set properly the key on the crankshaft is no longer at 12:00. its sitting at 10:00. everything else is lined up. if i turn the crankshaft and put the key back at 12:00 and put the chain back on will this solve the problem? sorry for asking so many questions.
  6. 1 problem that i have is that there isnt that little timing plate above the crankshaft pulley that tells you where to set the timing at. also i dont understand why it takes several revolutions to get the bright link back to where its supposed to be. i just thought if i was at tdc on #1 piston on the compression stroke and the rotor was pointing at the #1 spark plug that everything was lined up the way it was suposed to be. one last question: where does the key on the crankshaft supposed to be when its at tdc?
  7. thats what i did. i had it set at tdc on the compression stroke. i even stuck a screwdriver in the #1 piston and turned the motor until it was exactly at its highest point. then i replaced both sprockets and the chain with the bright link on the right side like the FSM said to do. after i got it all put back together it still ran bad so i changed the crankshaft pulley. now it runs worse and when i have it set to tdc the bright link is on the other side of the sprocket and it runs really bad. i dont understand how this happened and i dont want to make any adjustments until i know what has gone wrong so if any of this makes any sence to anyone please give me some insight cause now im at a total loss. i have been tryin to get this running now for 6 months. thanks.
  8. i thought it was supposed to be tdc on the compression stroke. thats how i have it set now.
  9. i changed the timing components on my 78. everything was exactly like the book said. tdc #1 piston all that stuff. afterwards i replaced the crankshaft pulley and put it to tdc on #1 piston. now the bright link is on the other side of the sprocket, not on the side where its supposed to be. and now it runs even worse. im baffled. does any of this make sence? im still scratching my head. any help would be apreciated. thanks

i apreciate all the help. this thing has been a nightmare since day 1. i have gotton the crankshaft fixed the head put on timing components on. i know its timmed right but when i start it the engine wont rev up hardly and its running rough.would moving the crankshaft and using another number on the top sprocket help with this? the timing notch is just right of the dash. what size feeler guages do i use to adjust the valves. sorry for all the questions but i think i almost have this thing figured out. thanks.

i understand thank you. i have 1 last question. on the end of the crankshaft the notch that has the metal insert to hold the crankshaft pulley. the notch is worn and the pulley has quite a bit of play when it is on. is this a big issue once i get it tourqued down?

your right the valves on the #1 cylinder should have been closed. i found out that a little late. i was so close too. ok my next question is how do i find TDC and get the distributor lined up as well as the camshaft cause i am now having to replace the head too. damn i could kick myself. Thanks.

i have a 78 and im tryin to replace the timing components. i have the motor at TDC on compression stroke. the notch in the crankshaft is pointing up. and the valves on the 1 cylinder are open. when i get it all back together the rotor on the distributer is not pointing at the #1 sparkplug. its way off. also is the crankshaft puley supose to have play in it b4 you bolt it secure to the motor? any help would be apreciated. thanks

hey fellow Z owners. glad to be a part of your community. maybe someone can help me. i have a 78 280 with a rebiult engine with 35000 miles on it. last week it started missing and back fireing real bad. i couldnt figure it out. i took some compression tests and none of the cycliders will hold compression. im not hard on the car i dont even hot rod it. a leak down test showed it is loosing compression through the rings. it doesnt burn any oil. any help would be apreciated. thanks
